Death of a Neighborhood: Reclaimed by Suwanee River
I lived in a neighborhood in the woods of Hamilton County FL, on the FL GA line. The Suwanee River would flood each year becoming worse than the one before. My parents tried to ride it out but it was just too much after three years they left the neighborhood; that was in 1983. I go as an adult to visit and today have found the family house gone but happy to see someone uses the land. I remember my dad raking the yard, neighbors all around, a country store, fishing docks and canoe rentals, a busy little area that mother nature apparently wanted back badly. I also remember the largest tadpoles that I still have even seen. My father having to carry me on his back to dry land where I could catch the school bus. I remember walking the dirt streets alone by myself as young as 7 because my mom lived on one and my dad on another. Our family loved this neighborhood, both in the woods with fishing and so peaceful but who knew it wasn't really peaceful at all. The raging Suwanee River came in and took down houses and resurfaced the landscape with it's many floods in the past 30 years.
Thank you for watching Florida Girl Adventure videos. A few years ago, I started this project of making videos while I was out 'adventuring' to share with my family. As you see I am a solo hiker, kayak-er and camper and I wanted my husband and daughter to be able to see the sites and share some of my experiences, without all the bugs, dirt and heat of actually being there. In December 2015 I went live with my first videos to Youtube and they were received successfully from the viewers. With that I have been encouraged to keep sharing my videos with you. I know that people from totally different states who may never make it to Florida might get to see some back wooded area, some swamp, or some local gathering hole that they otherwise would never have seen.
If you like my videos please check out my website here:
