Suwon Hwaseong (South Korea) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Suwon Hwaseong in South Korea.
The Hwaseong Fortress is the most famous historic site in South Korea and the centre of Suwon, a city with a population of around a million, is dominated by the impressive looking fortress. The twenty-second monarch of the Korean Joseon Dynasty, King Jeongjo, ordered the construction of the complex in 1794.It is like a large open air museum and measures a hundred and thirty hectares, its walls extending for five kilometres. Indeed, the unique value of the fortress has been recognised by Unesco who have designated it as a World Heritage Site. A walk through the fortress could take several hours but it is well worth making the time to enjoy the splendour of the buildings. The majestic towers of Hwaseong continue to rise proudly into the sky above Suwon as a noble landmark of the city and also the Joseon Dynasty.

수원 - Walking around Suwon(Feat. 수원화성 - Hwaseong Fortress), Gyeonggi-do, Korea (Per Request)
Suwon (Korean: 수원; Hanja: 水原, Korean pronunciation: [su.wʌn]) is the capital and largest metropolis of Gyeonggi-do, South Korea's most populous province which surrounds Seoul, the national capital. Suwon lies about 30 kilometres (19 miles) south of Seoul. It is traditionally known as The City of Filial Piety. With a population close to 1.2 million, it is larger than Ulsan, although it is not governed as a metropolitan city.
Suwon has existed in various forms throughout Korea's history, growing from a small settlement to become a major industrial and cultural center. It is the only remaining completely walled city in South Korea. The city walls are one of the more popular tourist destinations in Gyeonggi Province. Samsung Electronics R&D center and headquarters are in Suwon. The city is served by two motorways, the national railway network, and the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. Suwon is a major educational center, home to 11 universities.
Suwon is home to football club Suwon Samsung Bluewings, which have won the K League on four occasions and AFC Champions League twice. The KT Wiz of the Korea Baseball Organization also plays in Suwon.
Hwaseong Fortress or Suwon Hwaseong is a fortification surrounding the centre of Suwon, the provincial capital of Gyeonggi-do, in South Korea. It was built from 1794 to 1796 by King Jeongjo of the Joseon dynasty to house and honour the remains of his father, Prince Sado. Sado had been executed by being locked alive inside a rice chest by his own father King Yeongjo after failing to obey a command to commit suicide. Located 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of Seoul and enclosing much of central Suwon, the fortress includes King Jeongjo's palace Haenggung. The site was designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997. Suwoncheon, the main stream in Suwon, flows through the center of the fortress.

From the visitkorea.or.kr: Introduction
Hwaseong Fortress is an impressive structure from the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) and the official fortress of Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do. The fortress, constructed from 1794 to 1796, was built as a display of King Jeongjo’s filial piety towards his father and to build a new pioneer city with its own economic power.
The fortress wall stretches for a total of 5.52km and has a great variety of military facilities that are hard to find anywhere else. Four gates face each of the cardinal directions—Janganmun (north), Paldalmun (south), Changnyongmun (east), and Hwaseomun (west)—and the seven-arch style Sumun gates straddle the point where the nearby stream reaches the palace. Above the Sumun gates is a pavilion called Hwahongmun.
Hwaseong Fortress was constructed under the guidance of Yu Hyeong-Won (1622-1673) and Jeong Yak-Yong (1762-1836), and is believed to have been constructed very scientifically. The fortress wall was built using Seokjae and Jeondol (bricks) and the holes between the bricks are just big enough to fire guns, arrows, or long spears through in case of an attack.
During construction of the fortress Jeong Yak-Yong invented ‘Geojunggi,’ which uses a ‘hwalcha’ (lever) to lift up heavy stones, greatly reducing construction time.
The Suwon Hwaseong Fortress went through many turbulent times and damage, and in the battle of June 25th, many of the facilities became so damaged that they were deemed irreparable. Even though the fortress restoration initiative (1975-1979) restored many of the sites to their former glory, Paldalmun to Dongnamgakru (an area 491 meters in length) has still not been renovated.
The fortress was designated as Historic Site No. 3 in January 1963, and in December 1997, it was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. A variety of performances and events are held at the fortress every day and Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival takes place here in autumn.

Welcome to HWASEONG HAENGGUNG PLACE in SUWON
Haenggung is a palace located outside of Seoul where king used to stay when he traveled, at war times, or when he visited tombs. Haenggung can be classified into three types depending on the uses. There were some haenggungs built and used by kings during war times to avoid attacks of enemy troops and to continue to run the country. The Ganghwa Haenggung, the Uiju Haenggung, and the Gwangjubu Haenggung in the Namhan Sanseong Fortress, etc. belong to that category. The Onyang Haenggung was built for the king's rest at the hot spring there, and had been favored by many subsequent kings since King Sejong first used it. And the Hwaseong Haenggung was the temporary palace where King Jeongjo stayed while he visited his father's tomb near it.
King Jeongjo, after moving the tomb of his father Sadoseja to Hyeonryungwon, built the new Suwon city, and constructed the city fortress. From 1790 to 1795 (the 14th ~ 19th years of King Jeongjo), he had several haenggungs built in major stops on his way to the tomb. They were the Gwacheon Haenggung, the Anyang Haenggung, the Sageuncham Haenggung, the Siheung Haenggung, the Ansan Haenggung, and the Hwaseong Haenggung. Among them, the last one was outstandingly the best in its scale and functions. When the king did not stay at the Hwaseong Haenggung, it was used as the administrative office of yusu, or governor, of Hwaseongbu.
King Jeongjo visited his father's tomb Hyeonryungwon 12 times for 11 years from February 1790 to January 1800 (the 24th year of his rule) After moving it in October 1789. Whenever he visited the tomb, he stayed at the Hwaseong Haenggung, holding various events. After King Jeongjo died, the subsequent king Sunjo constructed the Hwaryeongjeon beside the haenggung and put the portrait of King Jeongjo in 1801 (the 1st year of King Sunjo). Subsequent kings following King Jeongjo ― King Sunjo, King Heonjong, and King Gojong ― would stay at the Hwaryeongjeon. The Hwaseong Haenggung, together with its protective fortress, is not simply a superb architecture. It has significant political and military meanings as a symbol of the royal power-strengthening policy the innovative king Jeongjo pursued.

SUWON HWASEONG CULTURAL festival
【4K】수원 화성행궁 Hwaseong Haenggung Palace in Suwon ????????
A haenggung is a temporary palace where the king and royal family retreated to during a war. Hwaseong Haenggung Palace is the largest one of these, use by the Joseon kings since the time of King Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800).
In addition to being used as a shelter during war, King Jeongjo also stayed here during trips to worship at his father's tomb. The palace was the location of a splendid feast held on the 60th birthday of his mother, Hyegyeonggung Hong, and many other events, including award certificates for successful candidates of special national exams.
Got interested to visit this place because first, it's the place where Dae Janggeum or Jewel in the Palace was filmed (kitchen scene). Second, it's a UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site.
So many interesting sites to see and the lovely maple and pine trees around the area is a sight to behold. I suggest going there on a weekday so place won't be too crowded.

Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon, South Korea
Check out the pictures that we took at Hwaseong Fortress!
My family and Yuri came out for a picnic. Hwaseong Fortress is a really pretty tourist attraction. The weather was nice. It was really fun.
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress....grand beauty that stood the test of time
한국의 세계유산 - 수원 화성
Hwaseong Fortress in Korea is often praised for its extraordinary beauty despite having served as a place to defend the country in ancient time.
Hwaseong Fortress... Korea's UNESCO World Heritage of the week... by Lee Unshin.
It's a structure that connects the mountains to the flatland, a wall of stones that protects a village, a military stronghold that guarded a kingdom.
This is Hwaseong Fortress.
Located in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do province, in the central part of the country, the fortress was built more than 2-hundred years ago during the Joseon Dynasty by King Jeongjo in a show of respect for his late father.
Straddling Mount Paldal , the circumference of the fortress is over 6 kilometers.
These majestic walls lead to four uniquely designed gates -- Janganmun , Paldalmun , Changnyongmun and Hwaseomun -- that guard what was once a village inside.
Beyond the gates, there are a number of facilities, including Hwaseong Haenggung palace, where the royal family took shelter during the war.
Hwaseong Haenggung palace is one of the most well known sites of the fortress. This is the very location where the globally popular Television series, 'Daejanggeum ,' or 'Jewel in the Palace' was filmed.
Eager tourists gather at the palace's front gate, where the Jangyongyeong guard ceremony is held.
The ceremony demonstrates 24 martial arts and is considered crucial heritage for its artistic and athletic features representing the traditional martial arts of the era.
Soldiers were stationed around Hwaseong Haenggung palace, practicing these moves to guard it during the Joseon Dynasty. Our performance showcases some of the ground martial arts among the 24 techniques, and my part involves dueling with real swords. The show is really popular with local and international tourists, especially during the weekend. With the overwhelming demand, we decided to make this a daily part of the program.
Visitors can also try their hand at archery practice, further helping them understand the significance of this remarkable place.
It's easy to get carried away by the recreational activities and the place's grand beauty, but like anything else that has stood the test of time, the fortress also reflects the scars of a bitter past.
Hwaseong Fortress has endured countless turbulences over the years. And it was most damaged during the Korean War. But the restoration initiative that started in the 1970s brought most of the fortress back to its former glory.
The north watergate, or Buksumun, is one of the few original structures in the fortress, and still controls the flow of water from the Suwocheon River.
The fortress is designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site... and is one of Korea's historical monuments.
These are grand designations, and fitting for such a historical structure, but for area residents, this enchanted place means something even more.
I come here often, at least three times a week, and every time I do, I feel as if the fortress is telling me a long-lost tale. I walk around peacefully, I get to appreciate both nature and historical beauty of the site. To me, it's more than a cultural treasure, it's almost part of my life, and what keeps me grounded every day, you know?
Built to honor a beloved parent and defend the nation, and now treasured as a sanctuary, the captivating Hwaseong Fortress... is sure to be adored as one of Suwon's main attractions for years to come.
