Japan Trip: Heijo Palace Japan's first imperial palace old capital city, Nara11 Japan Moopon
During most of the Nara Period (710-794), Nara served as the Japan's capital and was called Heijo-kyo. The Heijo Palace, extending about one kilometer wide and one kilometer long, served as the site of the emperor's residence and the government offices. Due to its great historical and cultural importance, the palace site was registered on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Nara. Three major structures in the former palace complex have been reconstructed in the past several decades. The Former Audience Hall (Daigokuden) is the foremost among them, which is the largest building on the palace grounds, which was reconstructed on the occasion of the 1300th anniversary of Nara Capital and opened to the public in April 2010. The large audience hall was used for important ceremonies and meetings. Its ceiling is decorated by the four animals of the direction on the compass and the twelve animals of the lunar calendar. A throne stands in the middle of the hall. The building is called the former audience hall, because the latter audience hall replaced it in the second half of the Nara Period. The latter audience hall's foundations are visible to the east of the former audience hall.
There were two more full-scale reconstructions that took place from the 1990s; one is the Suzaku Gate (Suzakumon), which is the main gate of the palace to the south, and another is the East Palace Garden (Toin Teien), which features a pond, streams and bridges, and was used for banquets by the imperial family. Also partially reconstructed includes the offices of the Imperial Household Agency (Kunaicho).

Welcome to Kawako Teien! This traditional Japanese strolling garden features sprawling paths along a charming lake, with rolling hills filled with flowing bushes and colourful momiji trees, and recreations of historic Japanese bridges and architecture.
In this first episode, we're making custom Japanese foliage to complete the feel of an organic Japanese garden, with round trimmed o-karikomi bushes, Japanese pines and colourful shrubs. We're also laying down the shape and layout of the garden, doing most of the terraforming, and filling in the first corner with rockwork and foliage.

Temples in Kyoto? Where?
During a recent visit by Shun and Mitt of Japan, Mitt gave me a banner / scroll of the Temple of the Golden Pavilion, named Kinkakuji.
Upon receiving the banner it brought to mind a story in reference to the Temple. While in Kyoto our schedule was so tight we only had time to take a photograph of the Temple from the other side of the lake. Other temples in Kyoto were seen as we drove past them.
However we were blessed to have enjoyed a private tour of a Buddhist temple in Kyoto. The temple's name: Daikaku ji. Here are links about the temple:

Japan - Ryoan-ji templem Kyoto - Travel - Jim Rogers World Adventure
Leading economic expert Jim Rogers traveled to 150 countries over 150,000 miles in three years - follow his adventures here on FentonReport.
In this video Jim and Paige visit Ryoan-ji temple in Kyoto, Japan.

Ryoan-ji is a Zen temple located in northwest Kyoto, Japan. Belonging to the Myoshin-ji school of the Rinzai branch of Zen Buddhism, the temple is one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The site of the temple was originally a Fujiwara family estate. It eventually came into the hands of the Hosokawa clan branch of the Fujiwaras. Hosokawa Katsumoto inherited the residence, and lived here before the Onin War. Katsumoto willed the war-ravaged property to be converted into a Zen sect temple complex after his death. Later Hosokawa emperors are grouped together in what are today known as the Seven Imperial Tombs at Ryoan-ji. The burial places of these emperors -- Uda, Kazan, Ichijo, Go-Suzaku, Go-Reizei, Go-Sanjo, and Horikawa -- would have been comparatively humble in the period after their deaths. These tombs reached their present state as a result of the 19th century restoration of imperial sepulchers (misasagi) which were ordered by Emperor Meiji.
Ryoan-ji's tsukubai, which is a small basin provided at Japanese Buddhist temples for visitors to purify themselves by the ritual washing of hands and rinsing of the mouth. An object of interest near the rear of the monks quarters is the carved stone receptacle into which water for ritual purification continuously flows. This is the Ryoan-ji tsukubai, which translates literally as crouch; and the lower elevation of the basin requires the user to bend a little bit to reach the water, which suggests supplication and reverence.
The absence of a dipper is intended to imply that the water is for the soul only and that it is necessary to bend the knee in humility in order to receive its blessing.

Shizuoka Kiun-kaku - 起雲閣 - 4K Ultra HD
Shizuoka Kiun-kaku - 起雲閣 - 4K Ultra HD: Located in Atami City’s center and originally built by a shipping magnate in 1919, Kiun-kaku (also known as Kiunkaku) served until 1947 as a private villa to different owners including the railroad tycoon Kaichiro Nezu. It’s interesting to note here that Kaichiro also happens to be the original owner of the Nezu garden and museum in Tokyo. In 1947 Kiun-kaku was transformed into one of Japan’s most famous Ryokans, functioning as such until 1999.
Kiun-Kaku’s fame not only comes from its past owners, but also for its elegant approach to mixing Japanese traditional architecture alongside Western and East Asian influenced interior design.
Without a doubt, it is this unique atmosphere that has attracted some of Japan’s greatest authors including Naoya Shiga, Junichiro Tanizaki and Osamu Dazai.
Now a museum, Kiun-Kaku is visited by more than 3 millions people per year and should definitely be on your “must see” todo list when going to Izu!

Japan: Heian Jingu Shrine in Kyoto (10/11) 2013-01-15(Tue)1349hrs
- Heian Jingu is a relatively new Shinto shrine founded in 1895 to commemorate the eleven hundredth anniversary of the establishment in AD 794 of Heian-kyō (today's Kyōto) and to enshrine Emperor Kanmu (737--806; reign 773--81) who decided to move the capital city there. In 1940, Emperor Kōmei (1831-67; reign 1846-67), who was the last emperor to spend his reign in Kyōto, was added to the list of dedication (enshrinement). In 1976 a lone far-left terrorist set fire on nine of the buildings including the main sanctuary (Honden) and burned them down. Money collected from donations enabled the reconstruction of the burned buildings in 1979.
