Japan Travel: Hokusai and a Small, Quaint Town, at the Hokusai Museum, Obuse, Japan, Nagano Prefecture 041
The Hokusai Museum, located in the quaint town of Obuse in Nagano Prefecture, displays the works of world famous ukiyo-e artist, Katsushika Hokusai. Best known for his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji ukiyo-e wood block series, Hokusai’s collection in Obuse reflects his connection with this small town.
Hokusai spent his twilight years in Obuse, under the invitation of Takai Kozan, a wealthy merchant. Kozan’s desire to bring culture to Obuse led him to invite Hokusai to his town. Hokusai added his touches to the town through the countless brushwork paintings he produced during his stay. In addition, Hokusai painted his signature waves, dragon and phoenix on the ceiling of two floats, used in the town’s festival. These works of art, including the floats are displayed at the Hokusai Museum. The museum has English descriptions as well as a short English video about the artist.

The Hokusai Museum is located at the center of town, about a ten minute walk from Obuse Station.

Hiking to Yonako Great Falls in Nagano, Japan
We go hiking to visit the great falls of Gongen & Fudo in Yonako, Suzaka, Nagano, Japan.
It's a one hour walk to the falls and back and there are many wonderful views on the track.
This is an easy hike that is not to steep, so if you have 1/2 a day to spare, this hike is well recommended.
There is also an old temple near the falls with a restaurant next to it. But the restaurant looked closed when we were there and I was told that the road had been extended to make access closer to the falls, which has reduced the number of people having lunch at the restaurant.
We really enjoyed this hike and the views it had to offer.

Obuse Field of T-shirts
Here is a promotional video we produced for the 2nd Annual Obuse Field of T-Shirts Exhibition, July 18th-28th, 2008. The exhibition is held in the scenic town of Obuse, nestled in a valley amongst Nagano's famous mountains. If you are not familiar with Obuse, you may want to check out the official Obuse Town website and the Field of T-shirts website for more information (sorry, both are only in Japanese). Here is a simple Japanese map you can print out and bring with you to show someone if you get lost. Organic t-shirts designed by amateurs and pros alike will be displayed on lines draped over a field of organic cotton plants. There will be a t-shirt design workshop on July 20th from 1:00pm. Kids will love it! Bring ¥3,000 to cover the cost of the organic t-shirt and art supplies... ¥3,000 is a real deal if you have ever shopped for organic clothing. Hope to see you there!
