Master Class: Silk in Suzhou, China
Suzhou is the birthplace of silk and this luxury good has been refined over the thousands of years that it has been in production in this canal town. No wonder it is considered some of the finest in the world-- Suzhou's silk adorned China's emperors!
But did you realize that silk is actually made from tiny, mulberry leaf eating silk worms? It is incredible how silk was discovered and how entire industries are built on these tiny worms.
We went inside one of the city's most historic, still working factories--the No. 1 Silk Factory, to learn how valuable silk products are created today.
After, we step into Xiu Niang, one of the highest end silk shops set along the Suzhou's canal to experience silk robes, dresses, scarves and more and to feel like Chinese royalty!

Suzhou Silk Factory - Trip to China part 36 - Full HD Travel Video
China is known for its silk and Suzhou is most famous place for silk producing. This tour takes you to the No.1 Silk Factory in Suzhou founded in 1926 as a state-owned factory. With this tour, firstly you can get the knowledge of the whole life of a silkworm.
What is so amazing about the silk-making process is that the silkworm creates its cocoon out of a single silk thread that is continuous for approximately 3,600 feet. Among the processes, making cocoons to skeins is especially important. The workers operate machines that spin the silk filaments into skeins. One cocoon is attached to each spindle. This makes it better understood why the filament of each cocoon must be unbroken. Then you will see how the people produce silk with the old style machine, and the making process of hand made silk quilt. You can testify that these quilts are light as a feather and very warm and buy one if you like it.

China's Best Treasures, Suzhou Tongli
China's Best Treasures, Suzhou & Tongli - - A No Struggle, No Development Production! By KennySnod * The fabled water town of Suzhou. Suzhou is often referred, by the Chinese, as the Venice of the East. It is a 2,500 -year-old city renowned the world over for its traditional gardens, ancient canals and silkworm production. In 1997 Suzhou was designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The construction of the Grand Canal created a means whereby goods from this region could be transported to the Northern capital, Beijing, a distance of over 600 miles. With prosperity came prestige as merchants and artisans plied their trade. Elaborate gardens were built. Visit the Garden of the Master of Fishing Nets, and experience all of the elements of a classical Chinese garden. In the afternoon, tour the Silk Spinning Mill, where you will learn how silk is created from the mulberry-munching silkworms to produce thread and fine cloth. Marco Polo once reported that so much precious silk was produced in Suzhou that every citizen was clothed in it. - - A No Struggle, No Development Production! Amazing Chinese Art- Chinese Yunjin(Cloud Brocade) in Nanjing
Yunjin, also called cloud brocade, is a traditional Chinese silk brocade made in Jiangsu since the end of the Song dynasty, and based on weft-weaving techniques from both the Song and Tang dynasties. To see more history about yunjin, please check this link:
In this video, you would see the wood machine that produce Yunjin. And it is a slow work but produce precious artworks, as they just can weave out 1 issun (3.33333..cm) each day. And it has to be two people working together at the same time on the 4-meter high machine. Yunjin was used to make imperial robe for kings in Chinese history. And now, this artwork is still playing its important role, which is used to make decoration on clothes, on pictures, on bags and so on.
It is also a good choice to enshrine them, as there is not many people making it in this world. In China, there are just about 100 people knowing how to weave Yunjin, but lots of them are not living for it. And with the workers getting older, and when they are old enough, they won't be able to work anymore, as it is necessary that the workers should have good eyesight for the work.
If you want to know more of Yunjin, or you have the intention to enshrine some, please feel free to contact me.
Our website is still under construction, and later we will upload some Yunjin pictures (and other kind of Chinese artworks) on it. So if you are interested, please follow us and we will let you know when our website is ready.
