Suzhou: What to Do in China's Venice of the East | GoPro Video
Today, we decided to bring our GoPro and wander through Suzhou, a city west of Shanghai, best known for its meticulously manicured gardens, romantic canals with arched stone bridges, pagodas, and temples dotted amongst the modern city elements.
Today, Suzhou is one of the largest and most prosperous industrial cities in China. It is also one of China’s most popular tourist destinations full of UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites. Prepare to be whisked away from the noise and chaos of the city to the peaceful symbolic life of the 'Venice of China'.
It makes a great one or two-day tour outside of Shanghai, being just one and a half hours by car or 25 minutes on the high-speed train.
This GoPro video shows you the five most important attractions you should visit to make the most of your trip to Suzhou:
- Shantang Old Street
- Humble Administrator's Garden
- Tiger Hill
- Luzhi Town
- Suzhou Modern Architecture

Chinese BULLET TRAIN First Class REVIEW to SUZHOU - The VENICE of the EAST! | Shanghai to Suzhou
In April of 2019, I traveled to China for the second time in my life. I spent 12 incredible days in the country and had the amazing opportunity to explore the cities of Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. During that time, I got to take a deep dive into the food, culture, and history of the country and I can’t wait to share my adventures with you!
On my third full day in Shanghai, I left my Airbnb had headed off to the city of Suzhou, which is also known as the Venice of the East because of its network of beautiful canals. Suzhou is roughly a 2-hour drive from Shanghai, but instead of driving, I was going to take the Chinese bullet train. Come along with me as I ride to Suzhou and review the bullet train along the way!
The bullet train is the fastest and most affordable way to get from Shanghai to Suzhou. It only takes 22 minutes and costs between $10 and $20 U.S. for first class, second class, or business class. You also have two stations in each city to choose from.
I headed to the Shanghai Hongqiao station since they had more trains per day—one every 5 or 10 minutes, whereas Shanghai Station only had one per hour. There were a lot of people there and you had to book your ticket on the machines outside. There was no English option on the machines, but luckily a very friendly local helped me out!
I had issues with my ID and passport when I tried to buy my ticket, so I went inside to see if anyone could help me. They let me into the station after I showed my passport. Inside, you buy your ticket at a counter. Thankfully my new friend helped me find it!
I got in line with about 50 people ahead of me. They didn’t accept non-Chinese credit cards and there was only first class available. It cost me 50 Yuan, or only a little over $7 U.S. From there, my friend guided me to Platform 24 so I could get there in time. I ran through the gate and made it to the platform with just minutes left. I had to run down the train cars to find the right one, dragging my heavy luggage in tow behind me.
Finally, I made it to Car 7 and took my seat. I recommend getting to the station at least 90 minutes beforehand in case you have any issues like I did.
First class had comfortable seats where you could stretch out. With a 22-minute ride, I wasn’t sure if I’d be served anything. As the city zipped by the windows, I noticed that, while there was a lot of greenery, there was also lots of pollution in the air.
We made a quick stop at another station. Between cars 7 and 8 was a clean bathroom with a faucet and a hot water station. There’s also a luggage section. I asked for a water, which cost me 15 Yuan, or about $2.18 U.S.
The bullet train was so fast! We got there so fast. During my bullet train rides in Japan, there was enough time to eat and really enjoy the ride. This one was too quick! It felt like I was on a metro line. Another difference between the Chinese and Japanese bullet trains is that I could hear people talking on this one, whereas in Japan, you’re supposed to stay quiet because of the Japanese etiquette rules.
After arriving in Suzhou, I found my guide, Janet. I came to Suzhou because it wasn’t too far from Shanghai and I wanted to experience its canals, gardens, food, and culture. I couldn’t wait to get out there and explore the city!
I hope you enjoyed coming along on my chaotic journey from Shanghai to Suzhou! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

Things to do in Tongli water town | Suzhou, China
Hi travellers,
In this video I show the array of activities to do in Tongli water town. Tongli is just outside of Suzhou and is known as Venice of the East.
You have to pay 100RMB to get inside the scenic area, where ebikes seem to be the largest mode of transportation.
We walked through Tuisi Garden, which entry is included in your ticket price. This was built during the Qing Dynasty and is a World Heritage garden.
I also show the kind of shopping available and some kind of singing performance.
There's a few different things to do within Tongli and you can just have a wander around and enjoy seeing traditional China.
Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as there's cobblestones and a wee bit of walking if you go in for the day.

Our Life in Suzhou
We have been living in Suzhou, China for a while now. We have made this video to share how we are living here with our family and friends.
Gate to the East (Suzhou Centre) - Suzhou, China
Suzhou Center, also known as Wings of Future, has the world’s largest free-flowing curved surface and skylight roof with seamless connection. This means a large project that needs illumination but leaves extremely limited spaces for any lights. Gate to the East towers into the sky with twin spires at above 300 meters. Inspired by the Suzhou garden archways, it is considered a gateway towards the new central business district. Its significance raises the bar of video effects. When installation is this difficult, our compact Media Tube® family and e:cue control engines come in handy, for their flexibility, intelligence, display brightness and quality.
Now, around 35,000 pieces of OSRAM and Traxon luminaires and e:cue control engines enable these landmarks to glow radiantly, to the city’s vibrant rhythm, by the Jinji Lake. When the evening steps on, the buildings will discover their glamourous reflections on the lake, ruffled by the breeze and becomes stars on waters. So bright, the starry lake could outshine the moon on the sky. So spectacular, everyone pass by could be lost in such marvel.
The Suzhou Center spreads its colorful wings like a phenix, and the Gate to the East reaches to the sky with brilliance like entrance to a bright future.
Suzhou 蘇州 (TONGLI, the chinese water town) - Part 3 (Full HD)
Suzhou is one of the most beautiful and mysterious city in the world, if not the most special of all.
This video is the Part 3 of a series of three videos made from my photos and clips collection taken at Tongli, in the surroundings of Suzhou during few days that i have stayed over there in the middle of December 2011.
Tongli is an age-old but very well preserved water township with a history of more than 1,000 years. It is located by Lake Taihu and the Grand Cana. The layout of the town and the residences basically retain the traditional style. Houses of the Ming and Qing Dynasties account for about 40% of all the buildings in the town, and a large number of beautiful gardens all over the little town.
