SVALBARD Museum + NORTH POLE Museum = Longyearbyen World's NORTHERNMOST Town (NORWAY on a Budget)
Norway on a Budget #4
Longyearbyen world's northernmost town in the Svalbard Islands archipelago has two museums to display an extensive insight into the local geography, history and geology.
The Svalbard Museum showcases how this historically rich area of resources and animal hunting, resulted in the unique 1920 Svalbard Treaty. This international agreement ceded ownership of these islands to Norway though with special migration and taxation provisions.
Across the street, the more specific North Pole Expedition Museum contains many artifacts, newspapers and histories about the early days of Polar expeditions. The museum also details the efforts of the 1928 Search and Rescue that, to date, has been the largest Arctic Search and Rescue mission, even 90 years later.

My four nights stay in Svalbard during the month of June '19. I was able to experience the polar summer for the first time. Svalbard is actually a Norwegian archipelago between the mainland Norway and the North Pole at 78 degree N. The midnight sun is the highlight of the area during this phase. I had booked a boat cruise 46:59 during my stay to visit the abandoned town owned by Russia, Pyramiden 55:28. The Nordenskiöld glacier 54:22 proved to be a unique spot for spotting polar bears and seals. Dog Sledding 1:43:26 although more prominent during the winter ice and snow, it was worth a try on wagon wheel carts to get the gist of it. I also managed to book a separate tour in the coal mines where the guide 1:14:55 gave us a very informative session on explaining how the coal mining work was typically carried out in Longyearbyen. A quick visit to the Svalbard museum 1:12:29 helped me to gather some insight on the 400 year old history of the settlement along with types of plants and animals that existed there.

Longyearbyen, (pronounced 'lungyer-byn'), is the largest populated area and the capital of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago.
Understand[edit]
part of a huge system for transporting coal on cables
Longyearbyen is the largest populated area on the territory of Svalbard, located in the high Norwegian Arctic. The settlement is popular as the most easily accessed frontier in the Arctic, and is an ideal base for the greater exploration of Svalbard.
The settlement is named after American entrepreneur John Munro Longyear (1850-1922), who as head of the Arctic Coal Company founded the town and the neighboring coal mine, the first large mine on Svalbard. Mining is still a big business here, with the roadsides and mountainsides littered with mines and their equipment, but tourism is catching up fast.
With over 2000 inhabitants, the town is the de facto capital of the islands, featuring the airport, a school, a shopping center, hotels, restaurants, and more. There are many possibilities for walking and sight-seeing in the immediate Longyearbyen area. Walking out of the settlement into the fjord, you will see the old cemetary and several abandoned mine buildings.

Svalbard Gallery, Nybyen. Permanent and changing exhibitions by artists in Svalbard, entry 45 kr. The adjoining artists' workshops are free to visit.
Inside the museum
Svalbard Museum, Svalbard Science Centre (at the end of the main street). Reopened 2006 in large new premises, it features many displays about the human history of the archipelago, especially whaling and mining, as well as various exhibits about arctic flora and fauna.
Longyearbyen Church
Church, above town. The world's northernmost church. Always open, and has coffee and cookies for the visitors. Also sells postcards, books, etc--just leave the money in a bowl.
Reindeer in the city
Animals. Reindeers roam free in the city. You can also see polar foxes and birds.
24-hour sundial
24-Hour Sundial. Not big (about 1 meter high), but it does 24 hours a day in the summer. It's located about 400 m north-east of the church. From the church, follow the road NE toward the water until the road turns 90° left. The sundial is off on the right side of the road just past the turn. edit

Svalbard and Jan Mayen Drone Flight: Longyearbyen is a small coal-mining town on Spitsbergen Island, in Norways Svalbard archipelago. This Arctic town is known for its views of the Northern Lights. The modern Svalbard Museum chronicles the regions natural and cultural history. It includes a stuffed polar bear. Live bears can occasionally be seen in the area. The North Pole Expeditions Museum recounts early efforts to reach the pole by air. Longyearbyen is on Adventfjorden Bay, which can be crossed by boat to reach Hiorthfjellet Mountains trails. Nearby, the Gruve 3 coal mine depicts Svalbards mining history. The underground Svalbard Global Seed Vault preserves backups of the worlds seeds in the name of food security. Husky-dog sleds and snowmobiles set off from Longyearbyen for trips farther afield to places like Isfjord Radio, a former transmission station with views overlooking the Arctic Ocean. Boat trips with fishing are also possible, reaching destinations like the walrus colony on the island of Prins Karls Forland. [wikipedia // Google]

???? ???? SVALBARD REINDEER + FREE Bicycles = Longyearbyen World's NORTHERNMOST Town (NORWAY on a Budget)
Norway on a Budget #3
Longyearbyen world's northernmost town, surprisingly has bargains to be discovered. Yes, even in Norway's High Arctic there is some affordability for the budget traveler.
The Svalbard tourist information center distributes free bicycle rentals and although the ride itself isn't special, it sure beats beating the pavement on foot. Matt cycles in Norway Land of the Midnight Sun to view a sunset over the town and other unique features in this remote northern village.
Magnificent Svalbard reindeer are observed in town as is the helicopter during an Arctic Search and Rescue. The village's school, greenhouse and an abandoned mine are also on display during this ride when, even on flat roads, a free bicycle presents its physical challenges.
And during some down periods, the role of the Svalbard Governor and his responsibilities are discussed in this tranquil town.

LONGYEARBYEN SVALBARD | Highlights of the Northernmost Town in the World
Have you ever seen the sun in Svalbard? It is unlike anything I've ever seen before - it was hovering just above the hills, moving sideways, before it finally set above those same hills.
There are several things to do in Svalbard. Exploration in Longyearbyen, Svalbard is very interesting.
Start at the Svalbard Church, which is open 24 hours. It is a welcoming and warm place to worship and to congregate. There's a stuffed polar bear inside - one of a few stuffed Svalbard polar bears in many places around Longyearbyen.
Another highlight of Svalbard is the Svalbard Museum. Here, you can learn more about the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, as well more about the history and nature of Svalbard. I learn a few things about whaling in Svalbard (a cruel practice, in my opinion).
The Svalbard Seed Vault is not open to the public; however, they are planning on opening a visitor's center in a few years. It is not officially announced yet!
I managed to check out the famous Svalbard Polar Bear sign, which designates the limit on where you are supposed to be safe from polar bear attacks. Beyond this point, you will have to carry a polar bear rifle for protection!
I'm sure that there are other things to see in Svalbard, so please let us know in the comments below if we missed anything.
Next vlog, we will explore what and where to eat in Svalbard!

SVALBARD Camping + STICKER SHOCK = Longyearbyen World's NORTHERNMOST Town (NORWAY on a Budget)
Norway on a Budget #2
Longyearbyen world's northernmost town presents a new travel experience and challenges for Borders on Budgets. Fortunately, Svalbard camping offers affordable accommodations.
The Svalbard Islands in Norway's High Arctic contains Longyearbyen, the northernmost town on Earth at the 78°N. Life in this remote village has its unique features and qualities including the Svalbard airport, the world's northernmost airport.
Refreshed after a deep slumber in his tent at the campsite in Longyearbyen, Matt shares his initial impressions upon seeing the Svalbards in the brilliant Arctic daylight:
- how can the Svalbards be affordable for travellers? Camping.
- how expensive is the airfare? Surprisingly, not bad
- why are there no flags on license plates? Because Svalbard is not in the EU
- who owns the Svalbards? Norway, but with limited sovereignty.
- wait, how expensive is Norway and the Oslo airport? You don't want to know.
And yes, the campsite, airport and Longyearbyen are safe from polar bears. So, comfortably we can walk along the shoreline.
While filming is occurring at 6 p.m., the same brilliant sunshine occurred until 4 a.m. the next day. This is, after all, Norway Land of the Midnight Sun.

Towards the Pole | Svalbard Island 78°N
A short trip to Longyearbyen, one of the northernmost inhabited areas in the world & Pyramiden, the abandoned town just 2 weeks before the start of the polar nights. The scenery, architecture & way of life was indeed a world apart. Even though we were here for just a few days, we could tell that life here was not for the faint of heart but was ultimately rewarding in its own right. An eye opener!
Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole. One of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas, it's known for its rugged, remote terrain of glaciers and frozen tundra sheltering polar bears, Svalbard reindeer and Arctic foxes.

Pyramiden is a Russian settlement and coal-mining community on the archipelago of Svalbard, Norway. Founded by Sweden in 1910 and sold to the Soviet Union in 1927, Pyramiden was closed in 1998 and has since remained largely abandoned with most of its infrastructure and buildings still in place.
