Polar Bears and Wildlife of Spitsbergen Svalbard
This video was made on the 2014 TravelWild Expeditions cruise to Spitsbergen, the largest island in Norway's Svalbard archipelago.
One of the main reasons people travel to Spitsbergen is to see polar bears in the wild. Glaciers, rugged coastal mountains and snowy landscapes offer the perfect backdrop to seeing polar bears in their natural habitat. On our Spitsbergen trips, we commonly see polar bears swimming, nursing their cubs, hunting seals and ambling among the pack ice. These are thrilling encounters that make Spitsbergen arguably the best place to see polar bears in the wild.
While polar bears are the main attraction, a trip to Spitsbergen offers so much more. Other wildlife that you are likely to see on a Spitsbergen cruise includes walruses, whales, seals, Svalbard reindeer and huge colonies of seabirds such as dovekies, norther fulmars and Arctic terns.
Cruises to Spitsbergen also entail visits to glaciers, research stations, historical sites and plenty of shore landings. Most trips are 7-10 days in length with some circumnavigating the entire island.

Svalbard in Norway 2019
Svalbard, Norway's pearl with a magical atmosphere and nature that does not exist anywhere else in the world. Snowmobile trip from Longyearbyen to Barentsburg is a must! Here's a video from our trip that might motivate you to go there :D

My four nights stay in Svalbard during the month of June '19. I was able to experience the polar summer for the first time. Svalbard is actually a Norwegian archipelago between the mainland Norway and the North Pole at 78 degree N. The midnight sun is the highlight of the area during this phase. I had booked a boat cruise 46:59 during my stay to visit the abandoned town owned by Russia, Pyramiden 55:28. The Nordenskiöld glacier 54:22 proved to be a unique spot for spotting polar bears and seals. Dog Sledding 1:43:26 although more prominent during the winter ice and snow, it was worth a try on wagon wheel carts to get the gist of it. I also managed to book a separate tour in the coal mines where the guide 1:14:55 gave us a very informative session on explaining how the coal mining work was typically carried out in Longyearbyen. A quick visit to the Svalbard museum 1:12:29 helped me to gather some insight on the 400 year old history of the settlement along with types of plants and animals that existed there.

SVALBARD Museum + NORTH POLE Museum = Longyearbyen World's NORTHERNMOST Town (NORWAY on a Budget)
Norway on a Budget #4
Longyearbyen world's northernmost town in the Svalbard Islands archipelago has two museums to display an extensive insight into the local geography, history and geology.
The Svalbard Museum showcases how this historically rich area of resources and animal hunting, resulted in the unique 1920 Svalbard Treaty. This international agreement ceded ownership of these islands to Norway though with special migration and taxation provisions.
Across the street, the more specific North Pole Expedition Museum contains many artifacts, newspapers and histories about the early days of Polar expeditions. The museum also details the efforts of the 1928 Search and Rescue that, to date, has been the largest Arctic Search and Rescue mission, even 90 years later.

SPITSBERGEN ENCOUNTER – SPECTACULAR ARCTIC WILDLIFE AND NATURE
I had the immense pleasure to work alongside the renowned photographer Daisy Gilardini during my photo tour around Svalbard. The trip has been organised by Amazing Views Photo and Adventure Tours.
Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. The the group of islands range from 74° to 81° north latitude. The largest island is Spitsbergen, followed by Nordaustlandet and Edgeøya. I first arrived in Longyearbyen, Svalbard’s main settlement, where I spent the first four days dog sledding, horse riding and getting to know the place and its people.
The main part of the trip was the cruise around the islands with One Ocean Expeditions. We’ve embardked in Longyearbyen and sailed out heading north. Our days were busy with shore excursions and zodiac cruises to places of historic interest, visits to wildlife colonies, viewing the exquisite native flora and soaking up the stunning landscapes.
This slideshow has been put together by Daisy Gilardini featuring photos of our photo group.

Whole Hurtigruten MS Spitsbergen cruise review: The Ultimate Svalbard Expedition (HD) - Polar Bears!
Video review of the Hurtigruten Expedition Cruise „The ultimate Svalbard Expedition“ with Hurtigruten MS Spitsbergen in July 2018.
In this video you’ll see the daily program onboard of MS Spitsbergen during our expedition cruise around Svalbard. See what kind of activities they offer. Enjoy beautiful pictures of the nature and landscape of Svalbard as well as footage of polar bear families. Unfortunately the polar bears were very far away (between 800 - 1500 meters). Therefore please excuse the picture noise in the video.
You’ll also see all ship areas like restaurant, explorer lounge, bar, jacuzzi, sauna, fitness room, shop, the outdoor explorer deck, the bridge and our room. We had a „O2 Polar Outside Cabin“.

I have just arrived in SVALBARD, Northern Norway. It's the northernmost inhabited place on earth, with more polar bears than residents. In the summer months, like right now, the sun brightens up the sky 24 hours a day, and in the wintertime, it's exactly the opposite.
I'm here a few days early before our Hurtigruten expedition sailing kicks off to Eastern Greenland and Iceland! Stay tuned for some fascinating stories about the people, culture, wildlife and nature from the Arctic over the coming 2 weeks!
Just curious, how many of you guys have actually heard of Svalbard before?
