Another waterfall! This time we're in the Vatnajökull National Park. The hike to Svartifoss takes almost 1.5 hours round, but it was worth it! We also finally got to eat and can you believe that I found a veggie burger at a gas station in Iceland?!

Trek : Svartifoss - Sjónarsker - Sel in Skaftafell natural park
The trail starts next to Skaftafell Visitor Centre and is well indicated. The first 250 meters go through the campground but the trail then turns right and uphill. Follow the signs until you arrive at a viewpoint above the waterfall (140 m ascent in 1.5 km). Continue down into the ravine, across the footbridge, and climb up the basalt column steps on the other side of the ravine. Continue on this trail to the viewpoint at Sjónarnípa, then head back towards the old turf house at Sel and then back to the visitor centre via Lambhagi.

One of Iceland's most awesome waterfalls, Svartifoss is best renowned for the hexagonal basalt columns that surround it and lay shattered at its base. These columns, which are very dark, lend the feature its name; Svartifoss means ‘Black Falls’. These columns are found in other places in Iceland, such as the Gerðuberg cliffs on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and on Reynisfjara beach on the South Coast. At none of these locations, however, is there a cascade of foaming white water to add to the beauty and fantasy of the site.

Hiking to Svartifoss in the Skaftafell area of South Iceland!
Our short hike to Svartifoss in the Skaftafell area of the Vatnajökull National Park in South Iceland. Svartifoss is 20 meters tall and is surrounded by black columnar basalt formations. Along the hike we also explored Magnúsarfoss, Hundafoss, Sjónarsker and the Selið turf house.

Where is Svartifoss Waterfall located?
Svartiffoss Waterfall is located in the Skaftafell area in Vatnajokull National Park in Southern Iceland. It is approximately 326 km/203 mi west of Iceland’s Capital, Reykjavik.
How do you get to Svartifoss Waterfall?
Svartifoss Waterfall is easily accessible via the Ring Road/Route 1. There is a large parking lot. Many organized tour groups come here too.
How should you tour Svartifoss Waterfall?
Start by exploring the visitor’s center at the beginning of the hike. Here you can view the short video regarding Iceland’s geological history and check out the hiking maps. The hike to Svartifoss is 1.5 km/0.93 mi from the visitor center. There are different hiking trails that can take you there and back (3 km/1.86 mi) or in a circular route (5.5 km/3.4 mi) to view other attractions in the park.
How long does the hike to and from Svartifoss Waterfall take?
This really depends on which hiking path you take and your pace. We recommend 1.5-3 hours. We took the circular path (5.5 km/3.4 mi) and had a picnic at Sjonarsker viewpoint so it took us a little longer than typical (about 3 hours).
Is the hike difficult?
The start of the hike takes you through the campground which is completely flat. It then turns uphill but flattens out in some areas. Closer to the waterfall, there are steps and if you want to get real close you will need to climb over rocks. The official website designates the hike as “easy”.
When should you visit Svartifoss Waterfall?
The Skaftafell visitor center is open year round. If you are going during winter time, be sure to stop in the Visitors Center beforehand to speak to the staff about the conditions.

It is said this waterfall was the inspiration for the design of the main church, Hallgrimskirkja Church, in the country’s capital, Reykjavik.

Ce qui fait la renommée de cette chute n'est pas sa taille ou sa puissance, mais les magnifiques formations d'orgues basaltiques que l'on peut voir autour et qui lui on donné son nom (svart = noir). Many say this hike is quick and easy, perhaps if they're talking about the walk back! The hike in, which is well marked, is almost entirely uphill over a 30 minutes. Totally worth it though!

This video shows our walk to the waterfall and a couple of other waterfalls flowing down the hillside, as we walked back to the bottom. The country side here was great and worth the steep walk up to view the falls.
Skaftafell National Park was a national park, situated between Kirkjubæjarklaustur, typically referred to as Klaustur, and Höfn in the south of Iceland. On 7 June 2008, it became a part of the larger Vatnajökull National Park.
It was founded on September 15, 1967, and enlarged twice afterwards. Before its inclusion into Vatnajökull National Park, it measured about 4807 km2 (2884 mi²), making it Iceland's second largest national park. It is home to the valley Morsárdalur, the mountain Kristínartindar and the glacier Skaftafellsjökull (a spur of the Vatnajökull ice cap).
The landscape is very similar to some of the Alps, but it has been formed in thousands of years by different influences of fire (volcanic eruptions of Öræfajökull) and water (the glaciers Skeiðarájökull and Skaftafellsjökull), the rivers Skeiðará, Morsá und Skaftafellsá. Volcanic eruptions under the ice-cap can give rise to jökulhlaups (glacial floods) which swell the Skeiðará river massively. The sandy wasteland between the glacier and the sea caused by jökulhlaups is called Skeiðarársandur, and is a typical Sandur. The last large jökulhlaup occurred in 1996.
Svartifoss waterfall is one of Skaftafell's best known attractions, mainly for the basalt column walls that flank it.
Skaftafell is renowned in Iceland for its agreeable climate and the sunny days in summer, uncommon in the south of Iceland. There is a natural birch wood, Bæjarstaðarskógur, as well as many species of birds and arctic foxes.
The waterfall Svartifoss (Black Fall) flows over a step of about 20 metres. Its name comes from the black basalt columns behind it.

In this video me and my mum visit a glacier in Skaftafell National Park called Skaftafellsjökull. Instead of booking a hike tour we walk down to it ourselves and explore the bottom of it. We then do another hike to a waterfall called Svartifoss. In the next video we travel back towards to west side of Iceland ready for Blue Lagoon and our flight home. But on the way we visit many landmarks.

Svartifoss (Black Falls) is a waterfall in Skaftafell National Park in Iceland, and is one of the most popular sights in the park. It is surrounded by dark lava columns, which give rise to its name. Svartifoss and Skaftafell Iceland
Svartifoss is one of the unique waterfalls in South-Iceland. It is situated in Skaftafell, which belongs to Vatnajökull National park. Skaftafell is a true oasis after driving through the vast black lava sand plains of Skeiðarársandur glacial outwash.
When I got to hike Skaftafell, I got goose bumps when I seen the mountains in a distance as you approach the national park. Skaftafell national park has been my favourite spot in Iceland for many years. However because of its location it hasn't gained as much popularity as other places in Iceland. The national park is located at the South East Coast of Iceland at the roots of Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Europe. It's difficult to describe the beauty of the area in words, but the scenery in Skaftafell is like no other; here you'll find stunning glaciers, black beaches and some of the highest peaks of Iceland.

On day 4 of our Iceland Ring Road Trip, we hiked to Svartifoss Waterfall in Skaftafell (also known as Vatnajokull National Park). It is a beautiful waterfall due to the basalt columns flanking the each side of the waterfall. We also saw several glaciers today as we drove north up the East Coast of Iceland. We even saw seals when we stopped at the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon!

It was great to see a glacier for the first time ever in my life. I loved Svartifoss and the northern lights. It was such a fun day to see all those things :)
