Glacier Svinafellsjokull can be reached by car or go for a light and pleasant walk among the lupine field stretching purple ribbon. The path starts just behind the hotel Skaftafell Oraerfi.
Svinafellsjokull glacier is very cracked due to the ubiquitous greenhouse effect, at the same time hides many caves. For lovers of climbing an ideal place to explore.
Here Christopger Nolan's with a camera crew filmed a scene for the film Interstellar as a planet potentially habitable. At this point the scene was shot also for the second season of Game of Thrones - recounting the fate of John Snow'a behind the wall.
Many tourists are attracted by the opportunity to see first of all the three languages of the ice in the immediate vicinity. The most popular - Skaftafellsjokull can reach the trail starting right at Skaftefell Visitors Center. The road is well prepared, but it ends with a few dozen meters in front of the glacier, near the lake, which every year due to the retreat of the glacier grows.

Our First Glacier Trek - Svínafellsjökull Glacier, Iceland
The Svínafellsjökull Glacier on the south east coast of Iceland, it stretches down from the massive ice cap Vatnajökull.
This glacier was used as a film location for Interstellar as the ‘Mann’ ice planet. It was also used as a location for Game of Thrones and Batman Begins.
We take a trek over the glacier which is sprinkled with the black ash from the last eruption in the area (2011). The surface of ice exposed to the sun is white (the sun layer) but underneath the ice is a rich blue.
There are various hikes you can take over this spectacular landscape, we went for the easy one which is more of a trek but you do get to wear crampons and have an ice pick.

Iceland - Svínafellsjökull Glacier
The Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is a place that no traveler should miss. The lagoon is located at the ring road an hour drive from Skaftafell. Jökulsárlón is well known for its spectacular beauty and large amount of floating icebergs. It is one of the biggest attractions here in Iceland.
The lagoon lies at the tip of a glacier's tongue, where ice bergs regularly break off and fill the lagoon. Stepping on the ice is dangerous, it can break or flip.
It's a famous spot, movies have been filmed there (Tomb Raider, Die Another Day) and there are day tours you can book that from Reykjavik that will take you here during the summer months. We drove here ourselves, and getting there is quite easy, as it's right off of Route 1. We were in awe to see those milky blue icebergs floating in the water!
