Bay Area Kids | Swanton Berry Farm | Davenport, California
Swanton Berry Farm is California's oldest organic strawberry farm situated along Highway 1 in Davenport, a little north of Santa Cruz. Inside the sheltered stand you'll find heaven on earth - we tasted some of the best strawberry shortcake, brownies, truffles, blackberry cheesecake, strawberry lemonade and vegetable curry that we've ever had in our lives. Also offered are a variety of jams, chocolate covered strawberries, scones, coffee and more. We decided to save strawberry picking for another visit. After, we drove down the coast a short distance and stopped by one of our favorite nearby beaches - Panther Beach.

An Entrepreneur Story: California Strawberry Farmer Domitila Tapia
When she came to the United States, Domitila Tapia started working on a farm picking strawberries. But Domitila wasn’t satisfied with just that. She wanted more, so she started getting her education and came back to be her own boss where she could grow and plant and see the results of her own work.
She started her own farm and now she’s teaching her daughters how to grow and care for strawberries here in California so they can be their own bosses, too.

UCGHI Policy Briefing on California's Farm Workers
Agriculture is a major driver of California's economy, worth tens of billions of dollars. Yet, most farm workers are immigrants with low levels of education and socioeconomic status, live in poor housing conditions, and have less access to health care, fewer legal protections, and higher rates of occupational injuries and chronic diseases than workers in other occupations. This briefing will describe the health of California's farm workers and make policy recommendations with the objective of improving health outcomes.

Swanton Pacific Ranch
Cal Poly's 3,800-acre Swanton Pacific Ranch represents one of the most ecologically-diverse, actively-managed, university-held properties found anywhere in the world. When Al Smith dedicated this ranch to Cal Poly, he knew this working ranch, an ecological hotspot for native plants and animals, including state and federally-listed species, would become a unique Learn by Doing living and learning laboratory for students of Cal Poly, forever.
We've just launched a capital campaign to support building the new Swanton Pacific Educational Center and Field Camp. The development proposal for the new facility was unanimously approved by the Santa Cruz County Planning Commission in March of this year. This milestone marks an achievement that began with the Al Smith vision for the property and his plan to develop an educational center. After his death and as educational programs at Swanton Pacific grew, the plan was built upon and refined over the past two decades by the hard work of Swanton staff and consultants. The new facility will increase housing for students and apprentices, increase instructional space and research space, and add a commercial kitchen and dining hall. The plan also includes a new water system developed around two new wells recently drilled near the Al Smith House. The approved plan builds upon previous work, such as installing high-speed internet connections, constructing the Orchard Pavilion at the Al Smith House, and repaving and widening the access road. Stay tuned!
