Swayambhunath: Kathmandu's Monkey Temple
Great views of downtown Kathmandu from up here at Swayambhunath Temple (स्वयम्भूनाथ स्तुप), but the place is full of monkeys, as you would expect. Stray dogs, pigeons, and monkeys. Hmmm. I had a shower immediately when I returned home. But had a good time up here, there's more to see here than at Boudhanath Stupa, which is one of Kathmandu's other main tourist attractions.

The famous monkey temple of Kathmandu is a place of worship for the hindu and Buddhist religions.
Swayambhunath temple Nepal before Earthquake
Swayambhunath, Nepal Bhasa is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, west of Kathmandu city. It is also known as the Monkey Temple as there are holy monkeys living in the north-west parts of the temple. The Tibetan name for the site means 'Sublime Trees' , for the many varieties of trees found on the hill. Singgu, meaning 'self-sprung'. For the Buddhist Newars in whose mythological history and origin myth as well as day-to-day religious practice, Swayambhunath occupies a central position, it is probably the most sacred among Buddhist pilgrimage sites. For Tibetans and followers of Tibetan Buddhism, it is second only to Boudhanath.
The Swayambhunath complex consists of a stupa, a variety of shrines and temples, some dating back to the Licchavi period. A Tibetan monastery, museum and library are more recent additions. The stupa has Buddha's eyes and eyebrows painted on. Between them, the number one (in Devanagari script) is painted in the fashion of a nose. There are also shops, restaurants and hostels. The site has two access points: a long stairway with 365 steps, leading directly to the main platform of the temple, which is from the top of the hill to the east; and a car road around the hill from the south leading to the southwest entrance. The first sight on reaching the top of the stairway is the Vajra.
Much of Swayambhunath's iconography comes from the Vajrayana tradition of Newar Buddhism. However, the complex is also an important site for Buddhists of many schools, and is also revered by Hindus.

SWAYAMBHUNATH STUPA
Find peace and prayers on the little hillock of Swaymbhunath in the northwest of the Kathmandu Valley. Also known as the Monkey Temple among visitors from abroad, Swayambhunath sits atop its hill, overlooking most parts of the valley. This is a good place to catch panoramic views of the city. The site itself has stood as a hallmark of faith and harmony for centuries. The glory of Kathmandu Valley is said to have started from this point.
Resting on a hillock 3 km west of Kathmandu, Swayambhunath is one of the holiest Buddhist Chaityas in Nepal. It is said to have evolved spontaneously when the valley was created out of a primordial lake more than 2,000 years ago. This stupa is the oldest of its kind in Nepal and has numerous shrines and monasteries on its premises.
Swayambhu literally means self-existent one. According to translations from an inscription dating back to 460 A.D., it was built by King Manadeva and by the 13th century, Swayambhunath had developed into an important center of Buddhism.
Legend has it that Swayambhu was born out of a lotus flower that bloomed in the middle of a lake that once spread across the Kathmandu Valley once was. The largest image of the Sakyamuni Buddha in Nepal sits on a pedestal on the western boundary of Swayambhu. Behind the hilltop is a temple dedicated to Manjusri or Saraswati - the Goddess of learning. Chaityas, statues and shrines of Buddhist and Hindu deities fill the stupa complex. The base of the hill is almost entirely surrounded by prayer wheels that were recently installed. Devotees can be seen circumambulating the stupa at all times.
The stupa sits atop the hill and the exceedingly steep stone steps leading up to the shrine is quite a challenge. However, there is also a road going up almost to the top and you can drive up. A large number of Buddhists and Hindus alike visit Swayambhunath through out the day. Swayambhu is perhaps the best place to observe religious harmony in Nepal.

Swayambhunath is among the oldest religious sites in Nepal, founded about the beginning of the 5th century CE.
Also known as the Monkey Temple as there are holy monkeys living in the north-west parts of the temple.
Pilgrims ascend the 365 steps from the eastern side that lead up the hill, passing the gilded Vajra (Tibetan: Dorje). The brass-plated dorje (thunderbolt), is one of the core symbols of Tibetan Buddhism. Known as the vajra in sanskrit, the thunderbolt is a symbol of the power of enlightenment, which destroys ignorance, but is itself indestructible.
The white dome represents the earth. Two giant Buddha eyes look out over the Kathmandu valley. Above the 13 re-gilded pinnacles use 20 kg of gold. The thirteen pinnacles on the top symbolise the 13 stages that humans must pass through to achieve nirvana.
Kathmandu Valley was once a lake, out of which grew a lotus, and the hill rose from the waters. The Lotus was transformed into a hill and the flower became the Swayambhu stupa. Swayambhu, meaning Self-Arisen or Self-Created.

Swayambhu is an ancient religious architecture atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, west of Kathmandu city. On the top of Swayambhunath Temple - Kathmandu, Nepal
Swayambhunath Temple is a huge area on a hill, about 2 km. to the West of the touristic city center. If you are staying in the downtown area, it is worth while to go on foot if you don't mind walking. On the way you will see so many temples and stupas and monasteries and TIbetan chortens. Swayambhunath Temple is arguably on of the top 5 must visiting attractions in Kathmandu city. The hill is surrounded by hundreds of Mani spinning wheels (perhaps 1080, althgough I'm just guessing because I didn't count them). The temple area is has also several chortens around, and from the moment you cross the main gate into the temple area, you come accross many huge sculpture of Lord Buddha, more Mani Padme Hum spinning wheels, and all kind of impressive buddhist effigies. The you have a long stairs to climb up to the top of the hill, where you have the huge Stupa (Tibetan Buddhism style) and hundreds Mani spinning wheels, smaller shrines, stupas and lots of pilgrims offering Puja to the Buddha. Downstairs as well as upstairs you will also find many stalls selling all kind of interesting Tibetan souvenirs and ritualistic artifacts. From the temple on the top of the hill you have a privileged view of the city.
I took the video on the 18th of October, during the Deepangkha Festival. This festival is repeated only every several years, and in 2013 it was held on the 18th and 19th of October, and they say it gathered over 2 million pilgrims. These have 48 hours to walk through Katmandu temples and shrines and outside Katmandu, paying their respects to the gods. Roughly the full pilgrimage includes roughly 140 temples and shrines. The pilgrims pay their respects, and leave some money and/or some other offerings. Therfore you can see many pilgrims leaving offerings or doing Puja (religious ritual to offer to the gods). Hundreds of people even slept there, packed together inside tents. The whole trek is over 120 or 140 km. long. The government had arranged first aid stands all around, for pilgrims to get free bandages, alcohol, disinfectant for their hurt feet, sun-screen, repellent, and other basic medicines for the young and the old. You could see people around town limping from their hurt and blistered feet. Some people say it's the biggest massive pilgrimage in the world. I saw hindus and buddhists alike worship Buddhist statues, as for the hindus the Buddha represents an Avatar of god Vishnu.

Swayambhu Stupa Nepal | Swayambhunath Stupa
Swayambhunath is one of the holiest pilgrimage centres in the Kathmandu valley equally venerable for the Buddhists as well as the Hindus. The cultural as well as the natural heritages of this hill are very important and valuable not only to the people of Nepal, India, Bhutan, China but also to all the peace loving people of the world.
Beautiful view of this Swayambhu hill can be observed from almost all parts of Kathmandu Valley and the entire Kathmandu Valley can be seen from the eastern side of the Swayambhu hilltop.

MONKEY TEMPLE (Swayambhunath Stupa) in Kathmandu Nepal
We walked across Kathmandu, from Thamel to Swayambhu to check out the legendary monkey temple of Swayambhunath Stupa. The story says that these sacred monkeys sprang up from the lice of the long haired bodhisattva, Manjushree. This sacred stupa offers excellent views of the city along with unparalleled access to one of Kathmandu's ancient cultural wonders.

Swayambhunath Temple, Kathmandu Nepal 2017
On away to Mt. Kailas. First stop is Kathmandu Nepal. Which is a doorway to Magnificent Himalayas. In-fact Nepal has 8 mountains over 8000m. Swayambhunath is a temple on a hill in Kathmandu.Dedicated to a monkey which is bizarre, because no monkey statues inside. You can read more:
What is fascinating about this temple is that it is also 5 element temple with 5 shrines for each element. There is also very interesting shrine for sky element . Entry is only possible to a front of inner doorway. There is a guard, who guards entrance for generations and says that there is secret inside there...but about that will be a separate video...
I apologize for chop-chop quality in this video. Time is scarce and internet is a luxury.
