The Legend of Sweetheart Rock:
The Legend
The story goes that a ravishing young princess from Maui, was captured by a young warrior from Lanai. He took her as his wife and brought her back to his home island. He was so stricken with her beauty that he was afraid to let other men see her, and thus he confined the princess to a sea cave near the rock.
One day, as the warrior was away, the weather suddenly changed drastically, and the raging surf began to pound this side of the island. The warrior rushed back to the cave, but it was too late: His beloved Puu Pehe had drowned. Heartbroken, he retrieved her body and, with the help of the gods, climbed the steep rock island, where he buried her in a tomb. Overcome with grief, the warrior then leapt off the rock to his death.

HISTORIC SITES OF HAWAI‘I: THE HISTORY OF LĀNA‘I - Part 1
In late 2015 and mid 2016 the State of Hawai‘i Department of Education engaged in development of a film series to help inform students across the state about the history of Lāna‘i. In April 2017, the three part series, titles “Historic Sites of Hawai‘i — The History of Lāna‘i (Part 1); The History of Lāna‘i (Part 2)” and “Lāna‘i: Creating a Sustainable Island Community” was released. The film brings a depth of history not previously available in our classrooms to our island population, and shares a rich collection of traditions, history and modern experiences in the community, illustrated with interviews, maps, old photos and modern imagery. The Lāna‘i Culture & Heritage Center partnered with the DOE, producers and Pūlama Lāna‘i in development of this new series.

Travel Vdeo Guide To: Lanai, Hawaii
Once the location of a booming pineapple industry owned by the Dole Food Company, Lanai today is a quiet and beautiful island with a small permanent population. Lanai City is the main spot for shopping and dining, though nature is not far from the city center. The Hawaiian landscape can be viewed from the Munro Trail, and the Garden of the Gods is found just 45 minutes outside of the city. Remarkable natural landmarks like Sweetheart Rock reveal the expansiveness of the Hawaiian scenery.
The Pineapple Isle
Appropriately known as the Pineapple Isle, Lanai was once entirely owned by the Dole Food company who cultivated the island’s pineapple industry. Today, Lanai is a calm, tranquil and romantic island destination with a small population of just over three thousand.
Lanai City
Lanai City is the center of business of the island, and therefore the majority of the island’s best shopping and dining locations are found here. As it is located on an area of highlands, it is much cooler than cities found on the coast. Lanai City is considered one of the United States’ most endangered historic spots, with many notable old sites in danger of demolition.
The Munro Trail
The Munro Trail offers splendid views of the extensive Hawaiian landscape. The trail runs past rain forest, pine trees and canyons. Make sure to stop at the lookout for a stunning picture of the scenery.
Garden of the Gods
Featured roughly 45-minutes outside of Lanai City is a rock garden referred to as the Garden of the Gods. These rock spires and towers were formed by years of erosion, and the entire site is a great spot for a hike.
Sweetheart Rock
Sweetheart Rock is a wondrous natural landmark that rises out of the ocean. Spectacular views of sunsets and even Hulopoe Bay are visible after a hike to the top of this legendary attraction.
The Experience at Koele
Though it is a small island, there is plenty of room for a great golfing experience. This golf course, known as the Experience at Koele, offers great views of the ocean and mountains, and features vivid greens.
The cats paradise exists and it is located in hawaii Usa and is called the lanai Cat Sanctuary
Most people visit Hawaii looking to spend long, lethargic hours on white sand beaches drinking bottomless mai tais.
Cat people, on the other hand, might have a more cuddly option in mind
On the small island of Lanai, a little-known slice of feline heaven called the Lanai Cat Sanctuary is home to 495 cats. People fly from all over the world just to hang out with them.
Though there’s a boundary surrounding the 25,000 square foot property, there are no cages within the main area of the sanctuary. The cats ― or “Hawaiian Lions,” as the sanctuary calls them ― have large huts and trees to climb on, patches of grass on which to sun themselves and all the human attention they could ever want.
“It’s 25,000 square feet of open-aired space for the cats to run around and play in, so they’re just kind of relaxing and chilling.”
The sanctuary is open to the public for a few hours every day, and it has become a tourist destination in its own right. For humans with an affinity for felines, it’s worth a trip to Lanai in and of itself.
Vaughn says people often travel to the island just to visit the sanctuary. One particularly dedicated man flew all the way from Japan just to hang out with the cats for a day. “He even walked from the airport to the sanctuary,” Vaughn said.
Visitors can even adopt or foster if they fall in love with a cat, and the sanctuary helps to facilitate adoptions for Hawaii locals and out-of-state visitors alike. Even if you can’t visit the sanctuary, they have an “adopt in place” program so anyone from anywhere in the world can sponsor a Hawaiian Lion.
If a cat is never adopted, however, it can live out its entire life in the sanctuary.
The sanctuary is the perfect place for cats in need of a home, but it also serves a second invaluable purpose on the island: protecting endangered indigenous bird populations.
“We started on the premise of saving our native birds on the island,” Vaughn explained. “We focus on trapping stray and feral cats from bird-sensitive areas and then bring them into the sanctuary, so it’s a win-win for both native birds and the cats.”
Until you get a chance to visit Lanai’s kitty heaven, you can sponsor a cat from afar, make a donation to help the nonprofit, or just pore over these adorable photos. Welcome to purr-adise...

Four Seasons Resorts Lanai Video Tour (with 2016 major renovations)
A mere 70 miles and 25 minutes from the island of Oahu, the Four Seasons Resort Lanai offers a luxurious private island experience.
After a recent multi-million dollar renovation, the beautiful resort at Hulopoe Bay is setting the standard for luxury in Hawaii.
Inspired by Hawaii's diverse and storied Polynesian influences, the décor for the cliffside resort showcases bespoke furnishing and artwork, rich materials, and lush tropical gardens.
Each of the 217 rooms and suites showcase teak and zebra wood walls, mahogany floors and hand-woven rugs. 75” LED televisions, in-room iPads, and intuitive lighting and privacy controls are all state of the art. Even the decadent bathrooms include rain showers and TVs.
This attention to detail is available in every room, from true garden view accommodations, all the way up to the sublime 3-bedroom Alii Suite. Yes, that is a TV being summoned from the ceiling.
The completely redesigned pool includes a central lagoon and a separate adults-only retreat. And the grounds offer a plethora of secluded lounge chairs and daybeds. A chilled treat is never too far away…neither is a host of employees working hard to make your stay perfect…or ready to brighten your day.
When it comes dining, One Forty has you covered from fresh buffet breakfasts to gourmet dinners. Malibu Farm is great for lunch or pool-side pupus. While the Views restaurant certainly lives up to its name. And not to be missed is Nobu Lanai, showcasing signature Japanese cuisine, as well as new creations infusing local Hawaiian ingredients.
When it’s time to burn off those calories, you’ll find an 18-hole ocean-view Jack Nicklaus Signature Manele Golf Course, world-renowned Peter Burwash International tennis, or perhaps take a cultural UTV tour and learn about Lanai’s history and current preservation projects. If 100 hp is too much, you can always dial it back to just one. And for those who long for the ocean, you’ll find snorkeling, dolphin and whale watching. Enough to get everyone excited!
As the sun sets on your Four Seasons Lanai stay, be sure to take a romantic stroll to Puu Pehe and savor the changing colors of Sweetheart Rock.
