Why was INSPIRING EXPLORER John Wesley Powell important to America?
Why was John Wesley Powell important to America?
John Wesley Powell may be America’s bravest explorer. With only one arm and a motley crew, he set to row three boats from Green River, Wyoming to the southern exit of the Grand Canyon in 1869. No one knew what lay inside this river system and this was the first time it was run. It didn’t take too long for things to go terribly wrong, as all remarkable expeditions have happen…

South Pass City State Historic Site
South Pass City began with a boom in 1867 with the discovery of gold on the southeastern end of the rugged Wind River Mountains. By 1868, Wyoming's City of Gold boasted over 250 buildings along the banks of Willow Creek and the surrounding hillsides. South Pass City hummed with excitement as numerous saloons, stamp mills, hotels, and businesses took advantage of the gold driven economy. Over 1000 people called South Pass City home during this raucous time. South Pass City was the first of three towns established due to the discovery of gold in what became the Sweetwater Mining District. In addition to Atlantic City and Hamilton City (now called Miner's Delight), Fort Stambaugh was erected to protect the miners in their search for gold from hostile Indians. Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails is celebrating its' 75th Anniversary. wyoparks.org.
Prohibition in Wyoming
Wyoming, the last state in the Rocky Mountains to adopt Prohibition, struggled to stop the sale of illegal liquor. It created a new statewide law enforcement agency, but two of its directors were fired for graft and bootlegging. Adding to the state’s problems, many Wyoming county officials did not enforce Prohibition laws. Federal Agents arrived to intervene, but were met with deep suspicion. This documentary features local interviews and insightful historians, who share surprising stories about this unique time in Wyoming history.

City of Gold, South Pass City - Main Street, Wyoming
From the initial discovery of gold in the mid 1800's to the creation of a state historic site, South Pass City has witnessed much of Wyoming's history. In addition to being the site of Wyoming's first big gold strike, South Pass City was instrumental in Wyoming becoming a territory and ultimately a state. It was the birthplace of women's suffrage, the first territory to grant women the right to vote and hold public office. But South Pass City is perhaps best known as Wyoming's first boom and bust town, with hard working and hard drinking miners, loose women, gambling and the entrepreneurial businesses who profited from their dreams of instant wealth.

SUMMARY
=======
The Green River Formation is an Eocene geologic formation that records the sedimentation in a group of intermountain lakes in three basins along the present-day Green River in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. The sediments are deposited in very fine layers, a dark layer during the growing season and a light-hue inorganic layer in the dry season. Each pair of layers is called a varve and represents one year. The sediments of the Green River Formation present a continuous record of six million years. The mean thickness of a varve here is 0.18 mm, with a minimum thickness of 0.014 mm and maximum of 9.8 mm.The sedimentary layers were formed in a large area named for the Green River, a tributary of the Colorado River. The three separate basins lie around the Uinta Mountains of northeastern Utah:
an area in northwestern Colorado east of the Uintas
a larger area in the southwest corner of Wyoming just north of the Uintas known as Lake Gosiute
the largest area, in northeastern Utah and western Colorado south of the Uintas, known as Lake UintaFossil Butte National Monument in Lincoln County, Wyoming is in a part of the formation known as Fossil Lake because of its abundance of exceptionally well preserved fish fossils.

Crow Nation
The Crow, called the Apsáalooke in their own Siouan language, or variants including Absaroka, are Native Americans, who in historical times lived in the Yellowstone River valley, which extends from present-day Wyoming, through Montana and into North Dakota, where it joins the Missouri River. Today, they are enrolled in the federally recognized Crow Tribe of Montana.
Pressured by the Ojibwe and Cree peoples, who had earlier and better access to guns through the fur trade, they had migrated there from the Ohio Eastern Woodland area to settle south of Lake Winnipeg, Canada. From there, they were pushed to the west by the Cheyennes. Both the Crow and the Cheyennes were then pushed farther west by the Lakota, who took over the territory from the Black Hills of South Dakota to the Big Horn Mountains of Montana; the Cheyennes finally became close allies of the Sioux, but the Crows remained bitter enemies of both Sioux and Cheyennes. The Crow were generally friendly with the whites and managed to retain a large reservation of over 9300 km2 despite territorial losses.

SUMMARY
=======
Colorado ( (listen), other variants) is a state of the Western United States encompassing most of the southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains. It is the 8th largest geographically and 21st most populous U.S. state. The estimated population of Colorado was 5,607,154 on July 1, 2017, an increase of 11.49% since the 2010 United States Census.The state was named for the Colorado River, which early Spanish explorers named the Río Colorado for the ruddy silt the river carried from the mountains. The Territory of Colorado was organized on February 28, 1861, and on August 1, 1876, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed Proclamation 230 admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. Colorado is nicknamed the Centennial State because it became a state one century after the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.
Colorado is bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south, Utah to the west, and touches Arizona to the southwest at the Four Corners. Colorado is noted for its vivid landscape of mountains, forests, high plains, mesas, canyons, plateaus, rivers, and desert lands. Colorado is part of the western and southwestern United States, and is one of the Mountain States.
Denver is the capital and most populous city of Colorado. Residents of the state are known as Coloradans, although the antiquated term Coloradoan is occasionally used.Unlike its neighbors to the north, west and east, Colorado has been recognized as a strongly socially liberal state. Same-sex marriage in Colorado has been legal since 2014, and it was the second state in the U.S. (after Washington) to legalize recreational cannabis. The state is known for its progressive views on abortion and assisted suicide; Coloradans rejected a 2008 referendum that would have criminalized abortion, and approved a measure in 2016 that legalized assisted suicide in the state, and remains one of six states (along with the District of Columbia) to have legalized assisted suicide. In 2018, Colorado became the first state in the United States to elect an openly gay governor, Jared Polis, in the 2018 gubernatorial election.
