Lords vaitharaneshwarar and brahma Vidyambikai, aghora moorthi and goddess Durga, Lord Nataraja and Bhadrakali in this temple. Also 3 sacred ponds and 3 temple trees are dedicated to this temple representing each deities power. The Thiruvenkadu Budhan temple is around 3000 years old and holds an important legend that describes the importance and uniqueness of this power vertex.
Legends call that Lord Budhan was born as a transgender and he meditated on Lord Shiva to relieve him from that form. Lord Shiva pleased by Budhan's fervent prayers blessed him with the proper male form and also granted him the powers to rule the intellectual drive and wisdom of the mankind. Apart from the specialty and uniqueness dedicated to lord Budhan there are legends behind the other chief deities of the temple.
The legend behind swetharanweshwarar
Swetha Ketu, an eight year old boy and an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva was destined to die at the end of his eighth year. His stonge devotion made him bold and brave and he knew that the only way to escape from Lord Yama's noose was to cling to the Sivalingam. Yama tried throwing his noose around the boy's neck but happened to pull the Sivalingam along with the boy. Lord Shiva burst open his eye with anger and kicked Yama down to the floor. He commanded Yama not to touch Swethaketu and also blessed the boy that he will live long years. Yama went away crest fallen. Swethaketu then prayed to Lord Shiva more fervently than ever.
Lord Shiva is known to have performed his cosmic bliss or dance here. The 3 holy tanks here known as Agneetheertham, suryatheertham and Chandratheertham are believed to have been created out of the 3 drops which fell of Lord Shiva's eyes when he was dancing.
Aghoramoothi the second chief deity of the temple is said to be the furious form of lord Shiva. There is a great legend describing his form and purpose.
The Legend behind Aghoramoorthy
Maruthwasura, a demon deeply meditated on Lord Shiva to obtain his shoola or devine weapon. With the shoola he started tormenting the saints and the people in the village. Lord Shiva sent Nandi, the bull, his divine vehicle to fight the demon. In turn, the demon thrusted Nandi's body with the Shoola in five places and henceforth the idol of Nandi is seen with scars on its body in this temple.
An angry Shiva, not being able to withstand that Nandi was defeated opened his third eye and killed the demon and this is how the idol of Aghoramoorthi, a manifestation of Shiva's anger holds importance at thiruvankadu.
On worshipping Aghoramoorthi, the obstacles and struggles in one's life will be torn to pieces.
There is also a special sanctum dedicated to Lord Dakshinamoorthy in this temple. The posture of Dakshinamoorthy is very different and unique. He is seen sitting with his legs crossed. You could never see this posture in any other temple. it is said that lord Brahma, the creator attains salvation in Thiruvankadu hence, there is a Brahma Samadhi, a divine tombstone that is erected in this temple.
This special temple dedicated to Lord Budhan dates back to the Cholan era. Lord Budhan is appeased when you perform special poojas to him on Wednesdays. If your Birth Chart holds affliction of the planet Mercury you should choose to perform poojas and homas to Budhan at this most powerful vertex and also offer green clothes to him.
Maasimagam is a very special celebration at Thiruvankadu. The Thiruvankadu is also known as Aadichidambaram and it is believed that Chidambara rahasyam, the unreveiled secret of Chidambaram temple is a unique feature of this temple as well. A pilgrimage planned to this temple will shower your life with the grace of Lord Budhan. You will witness a divine and positive intervention taking away the misfortunes of your life and replacing it with abundant joy and prosperity.
