Swimming With Wild Dolphins in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
A charter with Sunlight On Water brought us to Kahului Bay of Big Island Hawaii near Kona. There, we swam with wild dolphins.
Kona Dolphin Swim
Video was taken on March 17, 2016 off the coast of Kona, Hawaii during a Swim With Dolphins Tour with Dolphin Discoveries.
The Hawaii Spinner Dolphins swam underneath of us while we were snorkeling in the water. After we were back on the boat they gave us quite a show swimming up along side of our boat.

Swimming with the Spinners Kailua-Kona Big Island Oct 2010.mp4
In October 2010 we spent an amazing 1.5 hours with the spinner dolphins in the bay by Captain Cook's Monument, Big Island of Hawaii. We had planned to snorkel across the bay to the monument early in the morning. A pod of about 35 spinner dolphins swam to where we, and about 6 other people, were swimming. For the next one and a half hours the dolphins swam around and around us, frolicking and mating. This video shows the highlights from 20 minutes of underwater filming.
Swimming With The Dolphins....Two-Step, near Kona, Hawaii
Our favorite place in Hawaii is Kailua-Kona because of all the great snorkeling sites we enjoy visiting. One is at Kahaluu Beach on Alii Drive and the other is next to the Place of Refuge Nat'l Park at a place called Two-step (a name given based on the entry point to the bay being a natural rock formation that looks like two steps going into the water). At Two-step, a pod of dolphins come randomly to enjoy the bay and interact with the snorkelers (or seem to). In November, 2014 we happened to be there and enjoyed their company! There were probably 30-40 in the pod including some young ones. They were the most active as you will see in the video....one even jumped out to the water at landed on my leg....luckily, with no ill effects!
Hope you enjoy my video of our encounter with these beautiful animals!

Hawaiʻi, also called the Island of Hawaiʻi,[2] the Big Island or Hawaiʻi Island (/həˈwaɪ.i/ or /həˈwɑːiː/; Hawaiian: [həˈwɐiʔi] or [həˈvɐiʔi]), is an island located in the U.S. state of Hawaii. It is the largest and the southeastern-most of the Hawaiian islands, a chain of volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. With an area of 4,028 square miles (10,430 km2), it is larger than all of the other islands in the archipelago combined and is the largest island in the United States. The island is often referred to as the Big Island to reduce confusion between the island and the state. It is coterminous with Hawaiʻi County and includes the Hilo Micropolitan Statistical Area. Tiger Shark encounter at Honokohau Harbor, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii 7/12/15
After watching this huge Tiger Shark swim by me and my brother at fifty feet in the channel we decided to turn and start back towards the moorings. At about forty feet we saw this shadow coming out of the darkness heading straight for us. We froze in our position and I started filming with my GoPro 3+Black on a 3ft pole in medium format. The shark held position to within 8-10 ft of me before finally turning and heading back out to sea. Exhilarating!!
Very Friendly Spinner Dolphin Swim in Kona
Elvira, Todd, and Christiana had a fabulous dolphin day, thanks to our personal dolphin, Stitches. Although there were a hundred dolphins around us, Stitches was the constant center of attention. He was kind enough to swim slowly and allowing us to stay near him. Uli swims kilometers a day all butterfly, and Stitches was interested in his odd way of moving without a mask and snorkel.
Thanks again to Pamela Polland for her wonderful music!!!
Harrison - Swim with dolphins - Kona Coast Hawaii
Rich and I had the most amazing 2 weeks on the Kona Coast of the big island in February 2015. This was one of our mornings with the wild dolphins when they were in their alpha resting mode. Such a gift for them to choose to be next to you in the ocean.
Wild Dolphin Swim- Kona, Hawaii
Aloha! These are the Nai'a or Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins of Kealakekua bay. People travel from all over the world for a chance to swim and meet with them. It is an amazing and magical experience to be close them. What most people don't understand is that this is their bedroom. Kealakekua, along with Honaunau (two-step), and Ho'okena bay are the homes of these pods. They are too small to go out into the open ocean and they stay close to their territorial bedrooms. These pods live in the southwestern part of the island and don't even travel to the northern part of the island unless they are escorting humpbacks as they leave. Humans have a compelling obsession with swimming with them, which is indeed a magical experience. Decades ago, it was not uncommon to see pods of well over 100 dolphins in the Kona area. Today the average pod size is 30-50. The reason for this is, unfortunately, love. At dawn each morning, the pods will arrive in one of these bays, scan the area for the contents and population of the bay, and chase out any unwanted predators so they can get a good days rest. Then they begin their process of winding down so they can rest. They are calm and playful at this time until 2-3 hours after dawn, when they begin to dive deeper and try to get their sleep. Unfortunately, these bedrooms are also favorite recreational sites for tourists and locals alike. It is presumed that a dolphin is acutely aware of any presence within 75' of them and will awaken to investigate. Because of the desire to swim with them, people either choose to or ignorantly chase and follow them, sometimes all day. This keeps them from getting the rest they need. Sadly the adolescents and infants are the most curious about humans and the ones who end up sacrificing their sleep to interact us. Because of the lack of rest, these dolphins often fall short of the pod and are unable to escape the dangers of the ocean at night when they are feeding. This is causing a lot of the females to be unable to live to reproduce therefore reducing the population of the pods. If you enter the water where they are, they know that you are there and will usually come investigate you, so there is no need to chase them. And it is illegal to swim with them, but they may choose to swim with you. If you love the dolphins, and you come to Hawaii, please help by spreading awareness of their plight, and respecting their space after 9 AM when they are resting. There is very little enforcement of the laws protecting the Nai'a and other marine life, but together we can make a difference by educating and spreading awareness so that future generations of humans and dolphins may have a chance to enjoy this beautiful paradise. The Nai'a have swam these waters for thousands of years, long before the first Polynesians arrived on these shores. With our help, our voices, they may still swim here for generations to come.

Aloha Hui!

Aura was kind enough to invite me to go out on a diving sesh to the captain cook monument to get some nice looks at the Hawaiian fish and the beautiful ocean. Saw a few Invasive roi to, but the area is a no fishing zone so I guess they are going to need to hang out. It was an amazing diving and swimming sesh non the less and a beautiful day in the ocean of Hawaii.
