What does it Cost to Run a Heritage Railway Centre? Swindon and Cricklade Railway.
Spoiler alert: A Lot.
We took a short break from running around the country filming #EveryDisusedStation (Back next week), and had a chat with the people that run Swindon and Cricklade Railway Centre.
First and foremost we would love for you to go visit and take part in one of their many events: (We will be doing a murder Mystery very soon!).
The good people here are trying to extend the line, so if you cannot visit but would still love to help, their are donation pages/buttons on the website.
They are a genuinely lovely bunch of hard working individuals that give their time to keep this place alive. Hopefully this video goes to highlight exactly how much time, effort and above, all cost involved.
The Centre runs on a section of the old Midlands and South Western Junction Railway. This heritage centre captures Swindon's other railway perfectly.
Thanks:
A big thanks to Dave, Dave and Dave for their time and hospitality. Oh and my god the cheesy chips are good!

Swindon & Cricklade Railway Mixed Traction Gala
This was recorded on 22/06/2019
Swindon & Cricklade Railway is a preserved line that ran from Cheltenham Spa to Southampton operated by Great Western Railway. The line isn’t the only one preserving it since Ludgershall MoD railway station is still active. Since it closed in 2015 there are still some activity and there are plans opening a heritage line from Ludgershall to Andover. There is a possible chance it may get removed since houses are developing.

Steam on the Swindon & Cricklade Railway
A sunny Sunday the 24th March 2019 on the Swindon & Cricklade Railway and the first steam running day of the season. Trains were being hauled by 1941 built Andrew Barclay 2138 Swordfish.
A points problem at Hayes Knoll saw Swindon built D2152 from 1960 attached to the other end of the train to enable push/pull running.
Met no.1 on the Swindon & Cricklade Railway - 20/04/14
A few shots from a brief visit to the Swindon & Cricklade Railway to catch Metropolitan Railway E Class 4-4-0T no.1 in action. She is currently visiting the line over the Easter period, and for the line's steam gala over the 26th and 27th of April, where she will be joined by former S&CR resident, GWR 5600 Class no.5637. Dad and I visited during the last two hours of running, the weather was quite a contrast from Saturday's outing for 60007.
Shots included:
- Running round at Taw Valley Halt.
- Out the window between Taw Valley Halt and Blunsdon, with a rather sprightly performance from Met 1.
- Arriving into Blunsdon over the River Ray Bridge.
- Departing Blunsdon with a slip, for Hayes Knoll.
- Departing Blunsdon for Taw Valley Halt.

Swindon & Cricklade Railway 21/03/10 Part 1
Part 1 of my visit to the Swindon & Cricklade Railway, my nearest heritage railway. The locomotive operating the days services was 0-6-0ST 'Salmon' No.2139. Prairie 5521 at the Swindon & Cricklade Railway - 27/08/12
The last day of the August bank holiday saw us heading just down the road to the Swindon & Cricklade Railway who over the weekend opened up their new extension south towards Swindon at what is soon to be Taw Valley Halt, scheduled for opening in early 2013. As the northern extension from Hayes Knoll wasn't in use it meant we got the rare opportunity of seeing run rounds at each end of the line as services would normally be push-pull operated or top and tailed. The loco chosen to haul services over the bank holiday was GWR 4575 Class 'Small Prairie' 2-6-2T no.5521 who had been visiting during July & August from the Dean Forest Railway. The only draw back of the day was we had the typical bank holiday weather.
Shots included are:
- 5521 arrives back into Blunsdon over the River Ray bridge from Taw Valley Halt.
- 5521 departs Blunsdon for Hayes Knoll, we then take a quick look around Blunsdon Station itself.
- 5521 arrives back into Blunsdon, note the Thunderbirds 'International Rescue' headboard.
- We then board the train and travel to Taw Valley Halt and back, I didn't film any onboard stuff north of Blunsdon as I've got plenty of that in previous videos.
- 5521 runs round at Hayes Knoll and departs for Blunsdon.
- With the rain now coming down we take a quick look around Hayes Knoll Station before 5521 arrives back.
- After running round again we come back to Blunsdon where she is seen departing on the last train to Taw Valley Halt with the driver getting rather enthusiastic behind the regulator, all good stuff!
Filmed on a Panasonic HDC-HS900 with a Panasonic VW-VMS2E Microphone.
