Exploring Sycamore Gap in Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland!
The lovely Julia has always wanted to go to see the amazing Sycamore Gap in Northumberland, so as part of our trip 'Up North' we decided to take Robert Croser and Cheryl Craggs along with us to Hadrian's Wall to find it.
The Sycamore Gap Tree is by Hadrian's Wall, between Milecastle 39 and Crag Lough, about 2 miles west of Housesteads Roman Fort in Northumberland. This section of the wall follows the edge of a cliff – an outcrop of the Whin Sill – and several sharp dips in it caused by melting glacial waters. The tree stands within one of these dips with the cliff and wall rising dramatically either side of it. The wall and adjacent land, including the site of the tree, are owned by the National Trust.

Castle Nick and Sycamore Gap (30th July 2017)
30th July 2017
I took my daughter to visit the new Northumberland National Park visitor centre, The Sill. I was involved in the early stages of the project when I was a member of the National Park. Unfortunately, only being recently opened, the Sill was jammed pack with visitors and we were unable to park the car. However, we came prepared for some walking along Hadrian's Wall and I parked elsewhere and we headed to Castle Nick (aka Milecastle 39) and Sycamore Gap (aka Robin Hood's tree).
Castle Nick is named after the gap in which it is located, a cut or in other words a nick in the Whin Sill (a volcanic feature of northeast England). The castle once boasted a tower with glass windows from the Roman period and was probably built by the VI Legion. There are remains that were probably watchtowers located at the top of the hill between it and Sycamore Gap. The castle was most likely used as a gateway for monitoring and taxing trade between Romano Britain and the tribes north of the Wall. It should be stressed that most of Northumberland lies north of the Wall and it is a common misconception that the Wall was or even is a border between England and Scotland. Neither country existed at the time the wall was built and the closest it has ever been to becoming a border with Scotland was when Elizabeth I rejected the idea in favour of building Berwick castle (although the earldom of Northumberland was disputed land between England and Scotland and this area has in the past been part of Scotland).
It is uncertain whether the castle and gateway in the wall was later used by border reivers. It is not impossible to imagine that it once was a den of smuggling, banditry, and cattle reiving.
Sycamore Gap named after the tree that did not exist at the time of the Romans was made famous because of the Kevin Costner film, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, which gives the tree its other name of the Robin Hood tree. Recently the tree was voted as England's tree of the year 2016 by the Woodland Trust and is currently in competition to be crowned Europe's tree of year 2017.
All in all, a nice short walk with my daughter followed by a trip to a local farm shop for an ice cream. Note that the footage I took is edited deliberately to obscure my daughter's face in the film. Many of the shots featuring just me are duplicated with my daughter for family viewing only. I am aware that the footage looks at times like I am ignoring my daughter... I can assure worried viewers this was definitely not the case.

Northumberland National Park
Northumberland National Park is the northernmost national park in England. It covers an area of more than 400 sq miles between the Scottish border in the north to just south of Hadrian's Wall, and it is one of the least populated and least visited of the National Parks. The park lies entirely within Northumberland, covering about a quarter of the county.

Sycamore gap on Hadrians wall. Filmed with a DJI phantom 3a. 23rd March 2016
This is probably the most photographed spot in the whole of Northumberland National Park. Here, a sycamore tree grows in a dramatic dip with Hadrian’s Wall rising up either side. The 1991 film ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’, starring Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman, was filmed here. - See more at:

Sycamore Gap Tree of the Year
Made famous by the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves film, the tree at Sycamore Gap has now also won The Tree of the Year award in the last couple of days. I was up at Hadrians Wall on Sunday with my wife and we took some drone video and photographs of the tree. I have also added in some other photos from this location including a couple of award winning images at The Guild of Photographers.

Hadrian's Wall and a visit to Haughtongreen Bothy 08/03/2018
A trip out across the county border into Northumberland, taking in a 2.5 mile stretch of Hadrian's wall, a visit to the Sycamore gap and then along the Pennine Way through mud, snow, bogs, goodness knows what else until we found the forest track to Haughtongreen Bothy where we had a bit of bait and a nice look around. A right old slog but a very enjoyable day out filled with good crack and sarcasm....Only downside was forking out for the overpriced car park, shocking rip off for visitors.

TV29 Sycamore Gap Travel Vlog | A Walk to Sycamore Gap/The Robin Hood Tree!
In Northumberland, there's a lonesome Sycamore tree in the middle of a dramatic dip. As if this wasn't picturesque enough, you also have Hadrian's Wall rising up on both sides.
During my UK trip, I was lucky enough to go on a short (and blustery) walk to see this beauty.
Here's a video of our #SycamoreGap Walk in #Northumberland.

Section 10: The Mare and Foal to Turret 37a
We pick up the trail where we left off last time on the Military Road near Milecastle House. As we missed the Mare and Foal last time and I used old footage from a previous visit, we decided to visit them properly this time. The mist adding to the atmosphere.
After we headed in the opposite direction to the Wall in order to visit Vindolanda. The path was a bit of a mini-adventure as there is a stream to cross with not footbridge and no clear path but it is a right of way.
Vindolanda is an impressive fort that has been re-invented by the Romans several times. As well as the remarkable ruins, there is a stunning museum of the the finds from this live archaeological site. The most famous of which are the Vindolanda written tablets which were voted Britain's most valuable treasure.
Thank you to Jayson for the use of his Vindolanda drone footage. Neil brought his drone but forgot to film the site (which is why he brought it - lol). Check out Jayson's video of Vindolanda at:
Leaving Vindolanda we visit Northumberland National Park's flagship, the Sill. A centre celebrating the Northumbrian landscape that I worked on in its very earliest days as a member of the national park.
With Neil, it is not possible to pass a pub without a visit, and the Twice Brewed did not disappoint with its selection of Ales brewed on the premises.
We then headed back up to join the Wall visiting Mile Castle 39 and Sycamore Gap. Sadly, Neil was flying out of the UK the following day so we had to cut the hike short from Turret 37a which is where the Pennine Way leaves the wall towards Bellingham. However, we will be back to complete Section 10 near the end of March when Neil returns. But I will still be out each weekend, so please subscribe for my adventures in the meanwhile.
To be continued...
