20-year-old identified as suspect in murder of Sydney
Originally published on October 11, 2013
After a month of investigation, a 20-year-old suspect has been identified in the murder of a business owner in Sydney.
In the early hours of September 8, Morgan Huxley, 31, took a taxi back to his Neutral Bay neighbourhood. Security footage shows Huxley arriving at 1:01 a.m. at the Oaks Hotel, which he was known to frequent. He drank a schooner and left the hotel at 1:29 a.m.
By 1:30 a.m., Huxley was standing at the traffic light waiting to cross Military Road. Daniel Jack Kelsall allegedly caught up with Huxley at the intersection to initiate sexual activity. Footage shows Kelsall carrying a satchel and wearing chequered pants and a black chef's jacket. The two walked together to Huxley's home on Watson Street less than 100 metres away.
Huxley's flatmate Jean Redmond went to check on him when she heard a noise from the bedroom. She discovered him in his bedroom wearing only his T-shirt and having sustained more than a dozen slash wounds in his neck and left side. He was under traumatic cardiac arrest due to the injuries.
Redmond called the paramedics at 3:01 a.m. The team arrived on the scene at 3:05 a.m. and for 23 minutes attempted to revive Huxley. He was then rushed to the Royal North Shore Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Investigators believe that Huxley and Kelsall had not known each other prior to their encounter. Kelsall worked as a chef's assistant in the Sydney Cooking School, also in Neutral Bay.
Kelsall was charged with murder and larceny and was arrested at his family home on Tuesday, October 8.

What God needs from me...
For the last 8 years my family and I have put our heart and soul into a church plant at Landsdale Gardens Adventist School. A small school in Northern Perth surrounded by middle class suburbia. On paper, a church plant here ticks a lot of boxes. By meeting in the hall we are on neutral ground. With our children in the classroom with many unchurched families we have a common connection. Social opportunities abound and those looking for Jesus or who desire to be part of a Christian community can easily join us on Sabbath morning in the hall to worship and share lunch together.
Despite the potential this church has not grown as one may expect. If all the families who have walked in over the years were still with us, we could probably claim a reasonable congregation. But life happens -- people move away, job transfers come along, and others are looking for a real church. A number of different approaches have been tried over the years to meet people's needs. Kids clubs, cooking classes, aged care visits, socials (games, movie or bonfire nights) but with little long term success. Last year we even closed for a few months when numbers were down to only 2 families. However, these circumstances ensure that all are involved. Pew warming is not an option and the parents would agree that our children have excelled in this area. Leading in songs, activities, children's stories and even taking sermons - they step up and have a go!
After a difficult start to this year, I had little inspiration or time for new ideas or outreach event planning. As my husband started a new job and I commenced a degree at university, it was clear that life was about to get busier than it had ever been. Clearly, witnessing opportunities would be on the back-burner. As a family we chose to continue with our two main volunteer activities -- dog fostering with SAFE Perth, and running the church Adventure Club (Pathfinders and Adventurers). We do these two activities because we love what they involve. Giving dogs a second chance at a stable home life, and getting outdoors to connect with people and God.
The story I want to share with you reveals that God does not necessarily require us to retrain, run major events or schedule more into our lives. He is able (and probably prefers) to work with who you already are and what you already do. The Holy Spirit just fills in the gaps.
Our last 2 foster dogs came as a pair from a Mum no longer able to care for them due to health issues. It was quite traumatic on the day we collected the dogs, and I just took the time to listen and reassure her that we would care for them as if they were our own. I followed that up with an invitation to come and meet the dogs at our place during the week, to see how happy they were once settled. The offer was accepted, and the next week Leanne and her two children (Lulu and Charlie) were at our place having a wow of a time with new toys and friends, and not worrying at all about the dogs. A cake had been brought to celebrate Lulu's birthday and we enjoyed a relaxing time at the local park. Not my typical line on a second meeting with a stranger, but as our weekend activities were discussed the topic of church came up and I invited Leanne to come along! A few days later a call came announcing that she would like to do that, but she was worried about the dress standard! Once those details were ironed out Leanne attended our church plant and was embraced by our open and friendly group. Being part of a church group that cares and shares together is seen by Leanne as really important, and helped her in making the transition into our church life.
Since that first Sabbath, Leanne has moved ahead on her Christian journey in leaps and bounds. She watched the Beyond DVD series in a few weeks, and can't wait until the kids are down at night to study her Bible. What an exciting Sabbath afternoon it was when Leanne announced to our church family that she had accepted Jesus as her saviour and wanted to be baptised! The baptismal course materials were read in a short time, and now we are starting a mid-week Bible study group together. How amazing is that!
God just does His thing. My part was about being who I am and genuinely caring about the people around me. Most other factors were way beyond my control. Leanne's heart was open to God's spirit, and the time was right in her journey. God ensured our paths would cross via two cute little dogs now in a happy forever home, as Leanne and her children learn more about their forever home and their Saviour who made it all possible. What did God need from me? A willing heart in tune with His Spirit and doing what I love! In my mind the world of witnessing just got a whole lot easier.
