Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
The Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car by the Chevrolet division of General Motors that has been produced in six generations. The first model, a convertible, was designed by Harley Earl and introduced at the GM Motorama in 1953 as a concept show car. Myron Scott is credited for naming the car after the type of small, maneuverable warship called corvette. Originally built in Flint, Michigan and St. Louis, Missouri, the Corvette is currently built in Bowling Green, Kentucky and is the official sports car of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The National Corvette Museum documents the car's worldwide history and hosts the annual event.

Pros
Big performance from strong V8
Economy isn't bad when driven carefully
Cabin finally gets some usability
Good resale value
Beaut, lairy colours from which to choose
Cons
Automatic gearbox is OK but not up with the best of the modern six-speeders.
Interior plastics are way off the pace
A-pillar blind spot remains a real nuisance
Not a true workhorse in load-capacity terms
It's one of the best load-luggers around but look for signs of abuse.
There was a time when local car companies didn't pay the utility market as much attention as they do now. In fact, Holden didn't even offer a sedan-based ute for a few years in the late 1980s.
Ford was almost as indifferent and it wasn't until the AU Falcon ute of 1999 that the company moved away from a basic body shell that had been around since the XD Falcon ute two decades earlier.
As the buyer demographic started to include increasingly well-off tradesmen and a move to outdoor leisure pursuits that suited the ute layout perfectly, no one could ignore it for too long.

Holden's first move was in 1990, when it reintroduced the ute in VG form, based on the then-current VN Commodore.
With the option of a fuel-injected V8 and some racier trim, the SS Ute was born and with it a whole market segment.
Suddenly, people couldn't get enough of high-performance utes that could work through the week and then head to the beach or bush on weekends.
Holden knew it was onto a good thing and continually refined the package until it arrived at the VE Commodore-based SS Ute of 2007.
The VE version was much better than any Holden Ute before it. The tray was now lined with plastic to protect the metal structure, the basic safety and dynamic package was much better and the vehicle was more practical, with space behind the seats to accommodate a briefcase or small backpack. It drove pretty well, too, and the V8-powered SS was especially strong.
All wasn't perfect, however. The same windscreen-pillar blind spot that blights all VE Commodores to this day remained probably the biggest driveability glitch.
Many of the earlier problems of the Chevrolet-sourced V8 were fixed with the move to the 6.0-litre unit of the VE. Where the old 5.7-litre variant often gave trouble with oil consumption and noisy operation, the 6.0-litre is much better. That said, any engine that seems noisy (particularly on a cold start-up) should be treated with suspicion.
Inside, the big thing to watch out for is a trashed interior in cars that may have been used as work hacks for a variety of company drivers.
The condition of the tray will tell you a lot about the vehicle's life and a tray that is scraped, scuffed and has generally been bashed around suggests a working truck rather than a weekend leisure machine.
Some misalignment in the fit of the individual plastic panels would be nothing new. Make sure the interior doesn't squeak and rattle over bumps.
Check the rear of the car for evidence of a monster tow-hitch. The V8 version of the ute was always seen as a good tow-car and some owners may have abused this ability. A car that feels as though the rear axle is walking around as you move from power-on to power-off could be suffering from worn bushes caused by towing heavy loads. Strange wear patterns on the rear tyres are another giveaway.
A combination of image and marketing ensured the SS Ute appealed to hoons and many have been driven hard. Be super-wary of modified cars.
Need to know
Many of these have been thrashed by cashed-up apprentices who bought them new. Try to fathom its previous life.
Watch for big tow hitches and signs of a hard life.
Be wary of modified examples. Many have been fiddled with extensively.
Any V8 ute needs a close check for crash damage.
