Elton John - Rocket Man (Sydney Entertainment Centre 1986)
Elton has always saved some of his best performances for Australian audiences, as evidenced by this version of ‘Rocket Man’. A song so important to him that he has named record labels, management companies, and a biopic film after it, the song was Elton’s highest-charting single upon its release in 1972. On December 14th 1986, Elton bravely put aside vocal issues that would soon be repaired with surgery and thrilled the Sydney Entertainment Centre by directing his 14-piece band through all manner of take-offs and landings... folding in bits of Traffic’s ‘Feelin’ Alright’ and the Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’ along the way.

Elton John - Take Me To The Pilot (Sydney Entertainment Centre 1986)
The co-A-side to Elton’s breakthrough single ‘Your Song’, ‘Take Me To The Pilot’ has gone through many incarnations on stage since its 1970 release. This version, performed on Elton’s tour of Australia with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 1986, is considered his most memorable. Elton has often said that the song is one of his favourites to perform and has been included in nearly every tour since 1970, including on his current Farewell Yellow Brick Road shows.

Elton John – Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me (Sydney Entertainment Centre 1986)
On December 14, 1986, Elton played one of his most-performed songs in the city he has toured the most in Australia. Treating the Sydney Entertainment Centre audience to an especially emotional rendition of his 1974 hit, Elton was accompanied by a 14-member band and 88-piece orchestra, as he had been during the entire “Tour de Force” down under that November and December. This final show of the tour was made even more poignant due to the fact that Elton had been diagnosed with nodules on his vocal cords and, as he explains in his autobiography, “Me”, wasn’t sure if he would ever sing again. Thankfully, the subsequent surgery did the trick and he’s performed almost 3,000 times since.

Sydney Entertainment Centre Opening May 1983 part 1
Finally found the whole show. Not been played for 32 years.
We got the contract (Prism Lighting) to design and program the electronic dance floor as well as the laser system.
The team was Nathan Thompson, Aivars Cizevskis and Glen Prust.
Bought our first computer with a keyboard (Apple II) and learned to program in a real hurry {machine code & BASIC). That talked to another board under the floor via a serial cable to drive the colour light globes.
Happy days ( no sleep for the 3 days up to the opening).

Backstreet Boys - Incomplete @ Sydney Entertainment Centre 6 March 2010 HD
Whatta great song! Friend was recording this one.
Sorry for the constant auto-focusing of the camera, the many shakes and sometimes complete mis-aim. The SEC officials are notoriously anal about video recording. I was told THREE times to turn the camera off. STFU @ those lamers! So yeah, it's pretty hard to ninja record when you can't turn off the display (unlike on my old Sony).
Sydney Entertainment Centre Seating
Being the first to book with Tickemaster when seats first become available is no guarantee for a better seat. In fact, you may even get a worse seat. My Eagles concert was spoilt because I couldn't see the performers. They had their backs to you and you couldn't see the large screen on which they were projected, as well as the special effects videos they showed the audience. I booked within minutes of the tickets becoming available on pre-sale. Despite this, I got a terrible seat.
I recommend that you check your seat allocation before accepting it. If its a bad seat, start the ticket purchasing process all over again. You have to take control of the process and not depend on Ticketmaster or the Sydney Entertainment Centre giving you a good seat just because you were the first to book. It doesn't work that way. They'll assign seats their way, to give them the lightest workload, rather than taking the extra effort to serve their customers.
