Mikwe / Mikvah Groningen: ontdekking en uitgraving | discovery and excavation 2014

The mikwe is located in the Rabbinaatshuis (built in 1890) next to the synagogue in the Folkingestraat in Groningen. After the Second World War it disappeared under a thick layer of rubble and concrete. Employees of Stichting Folkingestraat Synagoge have tracked down and exposed it.
The mikwe can be visited during the regular opening hours of the synagogue (Tue - Fri and Sun, 1- 5 pm, in Jan. and Feb. limited opening hours). The mikvah is provided with information and illustrations.

Witnesses along the tracks
During the Second World War, more than 100,000 Dutch Jews were deported. Only a handful ever returned. On Sunday, a new travelling exhibition of the Westerbork Museum opened in the Groningen synagogue, which tells their story from a different perspective.

Northern Holland - Walking Appingedam, Jukwerd & Tjamsweer [Jan 21, 2017]
A leasurely walk in a very picturesque corner of the Dutch province Groningen. The on the Damsterdiep canal - once the river 'Fivel' - situated Appingedam is a very old market town and former religious centre. It boasts so called 'hanging kitchens' above the canal and also many very old houses. Though the former medieval monastery has disappeared; there is still the - restored - Synagogue of the Jewish community, the community that was cruelly erased by the German Nazi's in WW2.
On this Saturday we didn't keep to the town but went out onto the countryside. Where we visited the on a 'wierde' [ancient flood-mound] situated hamlet annex church Jukwerd and the imposing church & cemetery of Tjamsweer. Returned to Appingedam by following the roads and paths on the left bank of the winding Damsterdiep.
As usual, some route information provided.
The music is from Giyo - 'Nocturne' and 'Astro (Give You All I Can)'
Northern Holland - Urban hikin' Winschoten, in Search of History [Apr. 8, 2017]
Winschoten is situated in eastern Groningen and a not unimportant town. Once it was a main centre of Jewish culture too, in the Netherlands only second to Amsterdam. That culture was brutally ended by the German prosecutions in WWii. While the synagogue was spared, afterwards the town erected several monuments to commemorate their 446 fellow citizens who never returned [only some 20 did return ...]
We walked the town, enjoyed the rich Fin de Siecle architecture of its once suburbs - and bought us cheese on the market.
As usual some route information provided.
The music is from Nym: 'Rooftops' and 'which Side Are You On'
