USNS Tanner (T-AGS-40), was built for the United States Navy as a fast oceanographic research vessel by Bethlehem Steel Corporation at its Sparrows Point Yard in Maryland in 1990. The vessel was the second oceanographic research ship to bear the name of Zera Luther Tanner, a noted oceanographer and inventor of a patented sounding machine. The vessel experienced catastrophic engine failure in 1993 and was laid up by the Navy and eventually transferred ownership to the Maritime Administration (MARAD).
The ship lay idle in the James River Reserve Fleet until 1996 when she began a conversion process, which removed her underwater sonar domes and equipment. The two original engines were removed and a new power plant was installed. The newer engine is significantly less powerful than the old engines. The sister ship, Maury (T-AGS-39), now the third vessel of the name TS Golden Bear, retained the original and more powerful enterprise engines.
The vessel was modified to increase the accommodations from 108 to 302 persons. New lifesaving equipment and upgrades to existing equipment were accomplished as well as enhancements to the habitability requirements of the vessel. She was delivered to Maine Maritime Academy on 6 June 1997 and sailed her maiden training cruise the following week.
State of Maine was called into active duty by the Maritime Administration (MARAD) following Hurricane Katrina and provided living quarters for oil rig workers, who were working to repair damaged rigs, and for Federal Law Enforcement Officers assisting in New Orleans.
The ship is normally docked at her pier in Castine when not on a training cruise or in drydock. State of Maine is classed with the American Bureau of Shipping, and all inspections of her hull and equipment are undertaken by this classification society. The ship entered drydock for scheduled maintenance and inspections following the summer cruise of 2007. She also entered drydock following the Summer Cruise of 2012, keeping within the inspection schedule required by US Coast Guard Regulations. Most recently, she entered drydock at the conclusion of her 2017 summer cruise.

First Female Student at Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, Maine 1974
News story- First female student at Maine Maritime Academy tours campus and holds press conference.
Deborah Doane Dempsey was the first female to graduate from Maine Maritime Academy. Born and raised in Connecticut, she went to the University of Vermont where she worked for a yacht delivery company. Later she decided to further her education at the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, where she was at the top of her class.
After first getting a BA from the University of Vermont, Captain Dempsey received a BS from Maine Maritime Academy. In 1994, she was awarded an honorary PhD from the Academy for her extraordinary achievements.
The men at the Academy treated her as an equal. She was not the only women on campus for long. Shortly after she came to Maine Maritime other women followed. When she graduated, valediction of her class, she was the first women to graduate from any maritime academy in the United States. Also she was the first woman to receive a merchant marine unlimited masters license, and she would be the first woman to sail as a master.
She started her career at the Exxon Company as a third mate and later moved to Lykes Brothers S..S. Company. where she was an advanced Master Mariner. She became the first American woman to command a cargo ship on international voyages. When at Lykes she was under pressure to hire other women as captains.
Dempsey was the first woman to become a regular member of the Council of American Master Mariners. She ended up working for the company for seventeen years.
Dempsey rescued a dead ship that had drifted and was going to crash onto North Carolina's Frying Pan Shoals. As a result of this daring deed, Captain Dempsey and her crew received the United Seaman's Service AOTOS Honored Seamen Award, The Seaman's Church Institute Lifesaving Award, and the American Merchant Marines Seamanship Trophy. They also received a letter of commendation from President Clinton.

Maine Maritime Academy's Training Ship Leaves Castine Maine
This video is about MMA's ship departing the school for a 68 day training cruise. This was filmed on May 7, 2014.
Maine
Maine (/ˈmeɪn/; French: État du Maine) is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and south; New Hampshire to the west; and the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the northwest and New Brunswick to the northeast. Maine is both the northernmost and easternmost portion of New England. It is known for its scenery—its jagged, mostly rocky coastline, its low, rolling mountains, its heavily forested interior, and picturesque waterways—as well as for its seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams.
For thousands of years, indigenous peoples were the only inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine. At the time of European encounter, several Algonquian-speaking peoples inhabited the area. The first European settlement in Maine was by the French in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples caused many to fail over the years.

The Best Small Town Main Street in America
Read more:
The best small town Main Street in America can be found in Illinois. The former rip-roaring lead-mining town of Galena once produced almost 85% of the nation’s lead, and was the busiest Mississippi River port between St. Louis and St. Paul, a bustle bigger than Chicago. Now, it charm lies in the preservation of its past, one which Galena proudly embraces.
Galena has been cited as having “The Best Small Town Main Street in America,” because it looks like a movie set idealization of Norman Rockwell’s home. Of course, the actual movie theater appeared in the movie Field of Dreams. By the middle of the 19th Century, Galena was one of the richest river towns in the Midwest. But when the lead ran out and the Galena River silted up, the town went into a century-long dive. The townsfolk became too poor to tear anything down. That, it turns out, was its salvation, and today the town appears pretty much as it did when Ulysses S. Grant worked in his father's store on the red-hued street.
Now, that preserved-in-aspic quality is the lodestone, the touro-dollar draw. The street is exuberant with boutiques, bars, reliquaries, art galleries, cafes, ghost tours, trolleys, locals sporting thick, black Ulysses S. Grant beards, and shops specializing in everything “craft.” The old brown brick buildings host handcrafted jewelry, homemade fudge, artisanal cheese, hand-sewn clothing, self-published books, in-house roasted coffee, immaculate confections, stove-popped gourmet popcorn, and, of course, craft beer.
Training Ship State Of Maine departs Pier 36
We are on Pier 36 along the East River, where we see Maine Maritime Academy's Training Ship State of Maine, or TSSOM, as she gets assisted out of her berth and heads for sea. From here, TSSOM will run out the final leg of her training cruise as she heads up to Searsport, Maine and then across Penobscot Bay to Castine. In the first scene, we see McAllister tugboat Amy C. McAllister and Moran tugboat Kimberly Turecamo as they prepare to assist the ship while lines are tossed from the dock. In the second scene, the ship gets taken back from her berth, and she blows her horn. In the final scene, the ship gets turned to face down river. TSSOM, originally the USNS Tanner, TAGS-40, was built for the Navy as a fast Oceanographic Research Vessel by Bethlehem Steel Corporation at its Sparrows Point Yard in Maryland in 1990. She is powered by a single MaK 601C rated at 8046 horsepower. She is 500 feet in length, 72 feet in breadth, a 42 molded draft or a 30.46 foot summer draft, a normal operating draft of 28 feet, and 19.59 light draft. She has a 123 foot air draft. She weighs 12542 tons gross and can run at 16 knots. Enjoy the view of the ship and the tugs as the work to assist her out of her berth, as well as the sounds of the engines hard at work. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The videos were taken on July 29th, 2016.
