STORYLINE:
Asian stock markets took a beating on Monday after US companies stopped hiring in August, reviving fears that the world''s largest economy is heading back into recession.
Japan''s Nikkei 225 stock average was down 2 percent at 8,772.91 with sentiment also undermined by the persistent strength of the yen against the dollar, which hurts exporters.
Australia''s S&P/ASX 200 fell 2.5 percent to 4,137.60 and South Korea''s Kospi slid 3.8 percent to 1,796.77. Hong Kong''s Hang Seng dropped 2.2 percent to 19,775.01. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, the Philippines and mainland China were also down.
Companies that particularly count on brisk economic growth to fuel their revenues were hit hard.Japan''s Hitachi Construction Machinery plunged 5 percent. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd. tumbled 4.7 percent. Mazda Motor Corp., which counts on the U.S. as a key export market, dived 4.3 percent.
Hong Kong-listed China National Offshore Oil Corp., or CNOOC, plummeted 7.7 percent after operations were suspended at an oil field in Bohai Bay that has drawn sharp criticism over oil spills. The project is a venture between CNOOC and the China arm of ConocoPhillips.
Investors were sticking to the sidelines as expectations mounted that the US Federal Reserve would take action at its September meeting to support the economy - perhaps a third round of bond purchases, dubbed quantitative easing III or QE3, analysts said.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed 2.2 percent lower on Friday, wiping out its gain for the week, on the heels of the Labor Department reported that no jobs were added in the US in August. It was the worst employment report in 11 months and renewed fears that another recession could be on the way.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 253.31 points to close at 11,240.26. It was the biggest fall in two weeks. The Standard & Poor''s 500 index fell 2.5 percent to 1,173.97. The Nasdaq composite fell 2.6 percent to 2,480.33.

SUMMARY
=======
The history of the United States from 1964 through 1980 includes the climax and victory of the Civil Rights Movement; the escalation and ending of the Vietnam War; Second wave feminism; the drama of a generational revolt with its sexual freedoms and use of drugs; and the continuation of the Cold War, with its Space Race to put a man on the Moon. The economy was prosperous and expanding until the recession of 1969-70, then faltered under new foreign competition and the 1973 oil crisis. American society was polarized by the ultimately futile war and by antiwar and antidraft protests, as well as by the shocking Watergate affair, which revealed corruption and gross misconduct at the highest level of government. By 1980 and the seizure of the American Embassy in Iran, including a failed rescue attempt by U.S. armed forces, there was a growing sense of national malaise.
The period closed with the victory of conservative Republican Ronald Reagan, opening the Age of Reagan with a dramatic change in national direction. The Democratic Party split over the Vietnam War and other foreign policy issues, with a new strong dovish element based on younger voters. Many otherwise liberal Democratic hawks joined the Neoconservative movement and started supporting the Republicans—especially Reagan—based on foreign policy. Meanwhile, Republicans were generally united on a hawkish and intense American nationalism, strong opposition to Communism, and strong support for Israel.Memories of the 1960s and the early 1970s shaped the political landscape for the next half-century. As Governor of Arkansas Bill Clinton explained in 1990, If you look back on the Sixties and think there was more good than bad, you're probably a Democrat. If you think there was more harm than good, you're probably a Republican.

Kishin Shinoyama, John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Double Fantasy
Find out more at Taschen:
Renowned for his sensual, provocative images, Kishin Shinoyama is one of Japan’s most controversial and acclaimed artists, at once hailed by critics and charged for public indecency. Photographing everything from antiques to porn stars, Shinoyama is particularly recognized for his work with pop icons and celebrities, and the rare, private moments he captures with very public personalities. Through his lens, world-famous faces often reveal an unexpected openness and vulnerability.
This capacity for ease and intimacy is perhaps most poignantly expressed in his beautiful series of photographs of Yoko Ono and John Lennon, shot at Ono’s request for the cover and promotion of the couple’s celebrated 1980 album, Double Fantasy, just three months before Lennon’s untimely death. Now, over 30 years later, these images—many of them never seen before—still resonate with a remarkable freshness and honesty, immortalizing the iconic couple at a pivotal moment in their personal and creative relationship.
Limited to a total of 1,980 numbered copies signed by Yoko Ono and Kishin Shinoyama, this book is available as Collector’s Edition (No. 251-1,980), and also in two Art Editions of 125 copies each, with a pigment print signed by Kishin Shinoyama.

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling Bravo! in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.)
Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality.
Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely.
And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
