I followed my instincts on this one and it paid off royally (I think, anyway)! Guess you had to be there - to see it unfold right in front of you - and it doesn't hurt to be a weather geek, either.
Best I can tell, it's called a roll cloud.
A roll cloud is a shelf cloud that is not attached to the surrounding cloud layers. It is an indication of a mass of moving air. Usually accompanies thunderstorms with strong winds. May also form along a cold front or other types of moving air masses. Brace for gusty winds and cooler temperatures with this sweeps by!
