INTRODUCTION
The living nature –we are part of- has produced an unimaginable amount and versatility of solutions that can serve as an example for the technology. This makes it an immense potential for future-oriented innovative techniques.
Today many pioneering artists and designers are moving away from conventional materials, methods and workspaces to explore new territories in biology, engineering and science. It is without doubt that we inhabit an age where boundaries between creativity and science have irrevocably blurred.
What can we learn from nature? And how can we tackle problems our conventional methods cannot solve? This exhibition shows some examples (with contributions from faculties of TU Delft) of innovations based on biomimicry; developing products, processes and services all based on good –sustainable- strategies in nature.
These innovations enable the convergence of physical matter and information to create systems with the potential to become more than the sum of their parts. Today it is possible to create structures that can alter their physical properties, retain information, sense, and respond. In other words, begin to resemble living systems. This has as well consequences for the role of designers. Quotes about a shift in this role accompany this exhibition.
Examples of design-strategies based on these ‘clever design’ principles in nature, can be classified into biomimetic applications in:
Shape; Structure; Making; Surface ; 4D Design (life-like behaviors such as logic, self-assembly, self-repair and autonomous motion resulting in a field of “programmable” materials and structures).
In this exhibition we focus on the Surface-examples, relating this exhibition to the earlier exhibition this year in “Het Nieuwe Instituut” in Rotterdam on “Designing the Surface”. ( and the EKSIG 2017 conference organized by the faculty of Industrial Design –TU Delft, explaining that the we enter a “New Material Age”, where materials are not made; they “happe” or “grow”.
( eksig2017.com ).
This exhibition is also related to the 100 years lustrum-program in the Botanical Garden of the TU Delft. botanischetuin.tudelft

Silent Walking Around DELFT, Netherlands ???????? (Part 2) - Wisteria Walks
Delft is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. It is located between Rotterdam, to the southeast, and The Hague, to the northwest. Together with them, it is part of both Rotterdam–The Hague metropolitan area and the Randstad.
Delft is well known for the Delft pottery ceramic products which were styled on the imported Chinese porcelain of the 17th century. The city had an early start in this area since it was a home port of the Dutch East India Company. It can still be seen at the pottery factories De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles (or Royal Delft) and De Delftse Pauw, while new ceramics and ceramic art can be found at the Gallery Terra Delft.
The painter Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) was born in Delft. Vermeer used Delft streets and home interiors as the subject or background in his paintings.Several other famous painters lived and worked in Delft at that time, such as Pieter de Hoogh, Carel Fabritius, Nicolaes Maes, Gerard Houckgeest and Hendrick Cornelisz. van Vliet. They were all members of the Delft School. The Delft School is known for its images of domestic life and views of households, church interiors, courtyards, squares and the streets of Delft. The painters also produced pictures showing historic events, flowers, portraits for patrons and the court as well as decorative pieces of art.
East of Delft lies a relatively large nature and recreation area called the Delftse Hout (Delft Wood).Through the forest lie bike, horse-riding and footpaths. It also includes a vast lake (suitable for swimming and windsurfing), narrow beaches, a restaurant, and community gardens, plus camping ground and other recreational and sports facilities. (There is also a facility for renting bikes from the station.)
Inside the city, apart from a central park, there are several smaller town parks, including Nieuwe Plantage, Agnetapark, Kalverbos. There is also the Botanical Garden of the TU and an arboretum in Delftse Hout.

Great to see all the cyclists in Delft in Holland making their way to work or college crossing the Hambrug. It would be brilliant if this was the norm over here in the UK but the infrastructure just isn't there, and probably never will be.
