Taiwan's East Coast Treasure | Taroko National Park Road Trip
The east coast of Taiwan (台灣) is full of beautiful nature, including its most famous treasure Taroko National Park (太魯閣國家公園). You can visit here as a day trip from Taipei (台北) but it's worth giving yourself more time to enjoy the coastline, mountains, and natural beauty. We're taking a road trip from Hualien City (花蓮市) to Taroko Gorge (塔羅科峽谷), a narrow gorge made of marble.

TAROKO NATIONAL PARK DAY TRIP FROM HUALIEN! | Taroko Vlog
Taroko National Park is Taiwan's most famous and popular National Parks. I stayed in the City of Hualien on the East of Taiwan for 2 nights and took a day trip to Taroko National Park.
It's popular to visit Taroko by Moped or Car but because I was travelling alone I decided to visit using the Public Bus.
I caught the bus at 8:30am in Hualien and headed straight to Taroko Visitor Centre. During my day in Taroko National Park I did 4 walks:
Shakadang Trail
Swallows Gorge
Heliu Camping to Lushui
Lushui to Tianxiang
I took the public bus between most of these trails too making the National Park much more accessible to a solo traveller in Taiwan like me!
I enjoyed the National Park, it wasn't the best day hiking I've ever had but I'm glad I got to see it. If I was to do it again I'd go on a moped or in a car with a group of people.
I stayed at World Inn Hostel in Hualien which I really liked and would recommend!

East Taiwan - TOURIST DRIVING
Must-see sights from the Taiwan's East Coast, planned by the in law's (Taiwanese natives).
Highly Recommended Sites/Accommodations:
Chihpen, Hotel Royal (natural hot spring) -
Tianxiang/Taroko Gorge (if you made the trek to Taroko, I recommend spending a night at Tianxiang!) -
Luodong Airbnb (super unique experience) -
Luodong restaurant (this is a MUST and you won't find it on Tripadvisor) - - traditional 10 course dinner with a spin
If you're going to make this trek, renting a car is the way to go, as you won't be subject to public transit's schedules. However, if you're just going to Hualien/Taroko Gorge, there is a train that runs from Taipei to Hualien, and a good shuttle system that goes from the train station to Taroko. I saw many travelers taking this approach; however, I'd recommend renting a car in Taipei and making the drive yourself (the coastline is unreal).
December = winter = less humidity = less mosquitos!
Other unique experiences that we will check out next time:
Pick your own green onion (and make scalion pancake with it) -
swim with dolphins -

Sunrise in ALISHAN | EasyCard Fail, Bento Boxes, Belly Rubs & Kaohsiung Luck | 12 Days in Taiwan EP2
In this second episode, we hit the road and leave Taipei for the famous forests and mountains of Alishan before heading over to Taiwan's second largest city, Kaohsiung.
You never know what's going to happen when you're on the road and these few days are no exception. Just when I thought I had bought the right card for my wife, turns out it wasn't an EasyCard at all. icash2.0 didn't work on the bus we were taking up to Alishan and we learned the hard way. Once up in Alishan, we woke up ridiculously early for the sunrise and while it looked like it was going to happen, that ended up being a fail as well. Still, we had a great time hiking through the forest the reminded me a lot of Lord of the Rings (Entwood or Mirkwood, take your pick). When we finally made it to Kaohsiung, we were pleasantly surprised by a city that is much less hectic and crowded than Taipei. This allowed us to freely explore places like the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, and the super artsy Pier-2.

LATEST: 6.5 EARTHQUAKE HITS HUALIEN, TAIWAN POPULAR TOURIST CITY
At least five killed, 60 missing after quake rocks Taiwan tourist area
Rescuers combed through the rubble of collapsed buildings on Wednesday, as they searched for about 60 people missing after a strong earthquake killed at least five near the popular Taiwanese tourist city of Hualien overnight.
The magnitude 6.4 quake, which hit near the coastal city just before midnight (1600 GMT) on Tuesday, also injured 243 people and collapsed four buildings, officials said.
Hualien Mayor Fu Kun-chi said the number of people missing was now close to 60, although an exact figure was not provided. As many as 150 were initially feared missing.
Many of the missing were believed to be still trapped inside buildings, some of which were tilting precariously, after the quake hit about 22 km (14 miles) northeast of Hualien on Taiwan’s east coast.
At the city’s Marshal Hotel, rescuers trying to free two trapped Taiwanese pulled out one alive, but the other person was declared dead, the government said.
Among the injured were mainland Chinese, Czech, Japanese, Singaporean and South Korean nationals.
Aftershocks with a magnitude of at least 5.0 could rock the island in the next two weeks, the government said. Smaller tremors rattled nervous residents throughout the day.
Residents waited and watched anxiously as emergency workers dressed in fluorescent orange and red suits and wearing helmets searched for residents trapped in apartment blocks.
Hualien is home to about 100,000 people. Its streets were buckled by the force of the quake, with around 40,000 homes left without water and around 1,900 without power. Water supply had returned to nearly 5,000 homes by noon (0400 GMT), while power was restored to around 1,700 households.
Emergency workers surrounded a badly damaged 12-storey residential building, a major focus of the rescue effort. Windows had collapsed and the building, which is around 17 years old, was wedged into the ground at a roughly 40-degree angle.
Rescuers worked their way around and through the building while residents looked on from behind cordoned-off roads. Others spoke of the panic when the earthquake struck.
“We were still open when it happened,” said Lin Ching-wen, who operates a restaurant near a damaged military hospital.
“I grabbed my wife and children and we ran out and tried to rescue people,” he said.
A Reuters video showed large cracks in the road, while police and emergency services tried to help anxious people roaming the streets. A car sat submerged in rubble as rescue workers combed through the ruins of a nearby building.
President Tsai Ing-wen went to the scene of the quake early on Wednesday to help direct rescue operations.
“The president has asked the cabinet and related ministries to immediately launch the ‘disaster mechanism’ and to work at the fastest rate on disaster relief work,” Tsai’s office said in a statement.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, the world’s largest contract chipmaker and major Apple supplier, said initial assessments indicated no impact from the earthquake.
Taiwan, a self-ruled island that China considers part of its territory, lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes. An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck nearby on Sunday.
More than 100 people were killed in a quake in southern Taiwan in 2016, and some Taiwanese remain scarred by a 7.6 magnitude quake that was felt across the island and killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.

Travel in Taiwan (2016, Jan/Feb)
By Rick Charette
We finished up our southern inspection tour with an afternoon of rollicking good fun at the wildly successful E-Da World (edaworld.com.tw), located close to the city core in the Kaohsiung countryside. The young park, according to Kevin Lin, GM of EDA Development Co., was brought into existence with two foundation ideas in mind: to serve as a benchmark model of international standards and sophistication for Taiwan’s rebranding Kaohsiung/Tainan region, and to provide a destination for families, with all members’ wide-ranging needs and desires catered to.
The theme-park area has rides, games, and all sorts of other entertainment. The adjoining mall has scores of upscale brand-name outlets and a moderately-priced youth-oriented section. The large upscale hotel has numerous superb restaurants, spa facilities, and many other attractions. There’s also a baseball driving range, a golf range, and many other recreational facilities. We spent our afternoon (give yourself a full day if at all possible) riding the giant rooftop ferris wheel, thrilling 55-meter-high rollercoaster, and scenic monorail, enjoying a skate on the mall’s ice rink, watching the Halloween-theme parade and show with players costumed, incongruously, a la Mad Max and The Nutcracker, snacking way too much … and much, much else that I just don’t have time to tell you about.
TRAVEL TAIWAN VLOG | Kenting National Park 墾丁 #12
Located in the south of #Taiwan, #Kenting isn't a place where I visit often as it is approximately 3.5 hours away with both the high speed rail and the local bus. I decided that with Kevin in town, I'd have to take him once out of the city of Taipei. The semi-private beach at the hotel is definitely the most beautiful one I've seen on this island. Listening to the waves hitting the shore makes the long commute all worthwhile. Honestly, if I had a chance to live by the water, I'd jump on the opportunity without a doubt. A special appreciation to my friend Doris and her boyfriend Kelvin for the company.

3 DAYS IN KENTING VLOG | Travel Taiwan
Fun fact: quite a bit of scenes in the film Life of Pi were shot in Taiwan, especially some of the surreal nature scenes were done in the Kenting National Park. The director Ang Lee is a Taiwanese native and wanted to showcase his beautiful home country!
If you guys are ever in Taiwan, DO NOT miss the most southern tip of the island. Kenting was soooo much fun to explore even with the crappy weather we had!

In this vlog I take you around with me for a few nights in Eastern Taiwan, specifically the coastal cities of Hualien and Taitung.
Taroko National Park is just a bus ride from central Hualien, and visitors can enjoy all kinds of activities there like hiking, birdwatching, and more. Unfortunately I went during a typhoon, so I had to cut my hike on the Shakadong Trail a bit short!
Taitung is a bit farther south and has equally as amazing access to nature, with the Dulan Forest just to the North which is accessible by bus. I loved seeing the majestic Sansiantai Bridge in real life, and the various aboriginal sculptures and art installations seen all along the coast.
MyTaiwanTour was a great local resource in helping me coordinate logistics of my trip. Whatever you are looking to do in Taiwan, they've got you covered:
My next Taiwan vlog will include my trips to Taichung and few other spots so stay tuned for more Taiwan vlogs.

About the Hualien, Taiwan:
Hualien is the main city on the East Coast of Taiwan. Most people who only have a day or two to visit this part of the island usually spend a night here to arrange a day-trip to nearby Taroko Gorge, then head straight back to Taipei City.
If you have more than a day or two, you should definitely plan to spend more time in the area. There are so many amazing things to see and do along the East Coast of Taiwan, and Hualien makes a perfect “basecamp” from where you can discover beaches, the East Rift Valley, hiking trails, harbours, hot-springs, waterfalls, and even do some river-tracing.
Hualien is also where people begin the famous and scenic Highway 11 road-trip all the way down to Taitung City.
Hualien is the biggest city on the east coast. It has a population of 110 000 people.
It enjoys old-fashioned island culture and is home to many ethnic minorities.
It’s not as commercially and industrially developed as the west coast of Taiwan, but it does have all the facilities and conveniences found in major cities.
The weather is unpredictable, typhoons are stronger and earthquakes are frequent.
The area is one of the world’s biggest producers of marble.
Death Toll Rises to 10 as Rescue Continues in Hualien County
Rescue workers have struggled to find survivors two days after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit the Taiwan county of Hualien late Tuesday night, leaving hundreds injured, several missing and death toll of ten.
