Vassili Zaitsev funeral at Volgograd - Stalingrad
In 2006 Vassili Zaitsev's remains were moved from Kiev to Volgograd where he wished to be buried with his fallen friends. Veterans of the Stalingrad battle came from all over Russia and Ukraine to pay their respects to sniper Vassili Zaitsev ,who gave them hope in the Soviet Unions darkest hours. One veteran commented- I came from Vorenzh to bury Vasya.
Captain Vassili Grigorevich Zaitsev (Russian: Василий Григорьевич Зайцев) (March 23, 1915December 15, 1991) was a Soviet sniper during World War II, notable particularly for his activities between October 1942 and and January 1943 during the Battle of Stalingrad. He killed 242 soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht and other Axis armies, including 11 enemy snipers, but the real number may be much higher, some argue it might have been as many as 500. Prior to November 10, he had already killed 40 Axis soldiers with the standard-issue Mosin-Nagant rifle. His military rank at the time was Junior Lieutenant.
Zaitsev was born in Yeleninskoye and grew up in the Ural Mountains. His surname Zaitsev has the same root as the word hare (zayats) in Russian. Before going to Stalingrad, he served in the Russian Navy as a clerk but upon reading about the brutality of the fighting in Stalingrad, he volunteered for front-line duty. Zaitsev served in the 1047th Rifle Regiment of the 284th Rifle Division of the 62nd Army. He is notable for having participated in the Battle of Stalingrad. There, Zaitsev set up a snipers' training school in the Metiz factory; it was run by Zaytsev. The snipers Zaytsev trained were nicknamed zaichata, meaning leverets (baby hares). Antony Beevor wrote in Stalingrad that this was the start of the sniper movement in the 62nd Army. Conferences were arranged to spread the doctrine of sniperism and exchange ideas on technique and principles that were not limited to marksmanship skills. It is estimated that the snipers Zaytsev trained killed more than 3,000 enemy soldiers.
Zaitsev took part in the battle for Stalingrad until January 1943, when he suffered an injury to his eyes from a mortar attack. He was attended to by Professor Filatov, who is credited with restoring his sight. On February 22, 1943 Zaitsev was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. He then returned to the front and finished the war on the Dniestr River with the military rank of Captain. After the end of the war, Zaitsev visited Berlin, where he met friends who served with him. After the war, Zaitsev managed a factory in Kiev, and remained in that city until he died at the age of 76 after suffering from a disease.

Premier Soviet snipers at Stalingrad
These are the confirmed kills-The real numbers are much higher
At Stalingrad there was a cult of snipers. By the 25 th anniversary of the October Revolution it was announced that there would be a socialist competition between the snipers.
The most famous, though not the most efficient sniper was Vassili Zaitsev from Batyuks division. On the holiday of the October Revolution Zaitsev had killed 149 Germans, He promised 150, but came up 1 short. The winner of the competition was Zhikan who shot 224 fascists.
For the 62-nd army Vassili Zaitsev was everyone's favorite. News of his successes were passed from mouth to mouth. Zaitsev opened a school of young snipers,His disciples were called - zaychata.
And so began the sniper movement in the 62-nd . Meetings were held between shooters, where they shared the secrets of their skills. On the Don and Southern front and Western fronts they supported the sniper movement, and soon they also developed their own celebrity snipers.

Top 20 Soviet snipers 1941-1945
See my updated version -
Out in the snowfields of the steppe in their white camouflage suits armed with 7.62mm sniper rifles, these guys caused havic on the Nazi invaders, They crawled forward at night into bombed out buildings and out into no man's land, where they dug snow holes and hides from which to watch and shoot!
The Soviets fielded snipers in the thousands during ww2-In fact there were hundreds of thousands of Soviet snipers fighting in ww2 including well over 2,000 female snipers.
The best-equipped Soviet soldiers were the snipers. Little was denied them..
Of course, the number of confirmed kills is much lower than the real number of kills. For example, F.Okhlopkov killed over 1000(!) enemy soldiers and officers
Soviet snipers were equipped with either a scoped Mosin Nagant 91/30 or a scoped Tokarev SVT-40.
The following ammunition was used by Soviet snipers during ww2 - 7.62 mm rifle cartridges with light, heavy, armour-piercing (B-30), armour-piercing incendiary (B-32), ranging adjustment incendiary (PZ) and tracer (T-46) bullets. Cartridges with light and heavy bullets

Our story:

Rossiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijə]), officially the Russian Federation (Russian: Росси́йская Федера́ция, tr. Rossiyskaya Federatsiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijskəjə fʲɪdʲɪˈratsɨjə]), is a country in Eurasia. At 17,125,200 square kilometres (6,612,100 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world by area, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area, and the ninth most populous, with about 144.5 million people as of 2018, excluding Crimea. About 77% of the population live in the western, European part of the country. Russia's capital, Moscow, is the largest metropolitan area in Europe proper and one of the largest cities in the world; other major cities include Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg and Nizhny Novgorod. Extending across the entirety of Northern Asia and much of Eastern Europe, Russia spans eleven time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland (both with Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk and the U.S. state of Alaska across the Bering Strait.
The East Slavs emerged as a recognizable group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. Founded and ruled by a Varangian warrior elite and their descendants, the medieval state of Rus arose in the 9th century. In 988 it adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire, beginning the synthesis of Byzantine and Slavic cultures that defined Russian culture for the next millennium. Rus' ultimately disintegrated into a number of smaller states; most of the Rus' lands were overrun by the Mongol invasion and became tributaries of the nomadic Golden Horde in the 13th century. The Grand Duchy of Moscow gradually reunified the surrounding Russian principalities, achieved independence from the Golden Horde. By the 18th century, the nation had greatly expanded through conquest, annexation, and exploration to become the Russian Empire, which was the third largest empire in history, stretching from Poland on the west to Alaska on the east.Following the Russian Revolution, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic became the largest and leading constituent of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the world's first constitutionally socialist state. The Soviet Union played a decisive role in the Allied victory in World War II, and emerged as a recognized superpower and rival to the United States during the Cold War. The Soviet era saw some of the most significant technological achievements of the 20th century, including the world's first human-made satellite and the launching of the first humans in space. By the end of 1990, the Soviet Union had the world's second largest economy, largest standing military in the world and the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, twelve independent republics emerged from the USSR: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and the Baltic states regained independence: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania; the Russian SFSR reconstituted itself as the Russian Federation and is recognized as the continuing legal personality and a successor of the Soviet Union. It is governed as a federal semi-presidential republic.
Russia's economy ranks as the twelfth largest by nominal GDP and sixth largest by purchasing power parity in 2015. Russia's extensive mineral and energy resources are the largest such reserves in the world, making it one of the leading producers of oil and natural gas globally. The country is one of the five recognized nuclear weapons states and possesses the largest stockpile of weapons ...
