My Choice - Ta' Kola Windmill: Tales from Vienna Woods
Tales from the Vienna Woods accompanying us on a tour to Ta' Kola Windmill in Xaghra, Gozo. Photos by Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech.
James Last and his Orchestra play, Tales From The Vienna Woods (G'schichten aus dem Wienerwald Op. 325) was composed in 1868 by Johann Strauss II, and it is one of six Viennese waltzes by Johann Strauss II which featured a virtuoso part for zither.
The waltz's premiere that year reiterated the ascendancy that the dance had made from its humble village origins to become one of the pleasures of fashionable Viennese society, largely thanks to the performing and composing talents of the Strauss dynasty.
Nevertheless, the title of Strauss' dance recalls the folk music of the inhabitants of the Vienna Woods.
The waltz's introduction is one of the longest he ever wrote for a waltz

TA' KOLA WINDMILL, XAGHRA, GOZO
This Windmill, known as Ta' Kola (of Nicholas), was built in1725 under Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena. It was dismantled and rebuilt in 17802. Its mechanism was made out of wood and it is still in working order. It is located in the village of Xaghra, Gozo.
First windmills in Malta were built by the Knights of St John in 1530. More were built in the first 100 years of British rule and we could find a windmill in almost all towns and villages of these islands.
Last resident of this Windmill was Guzeppi Grech, son of Kola (Nicholas), as he was affectionaly known who died in 1987. The tools we see displayed were all his.
