Afrikaanse Taal Monument - Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa
Known simply as the Taal monument or Afrikaans language monument, the most famous Afrikaans icon, die Afrikaanse Taalmonument, sits on Paarl rock, erected in 1975 to commemorate the semi centenary of Afrikaans as an official language, separate from Dutch, overlooking the farmlands of Stellenbosch and Paarl.
Designed by architect Jan van Wijk, the monument, shaped in a number of tall obelisk style columns, takes its inspiration from the surrounding environment of granite rock and the words of NP van Wyk Louw, who wrote Afrikaans stands with one leg in Africa and with the other in the west and CJ Langenhoven who said Afrikaans is a rapidly ascending curve.

The views from up on Paarl Rock are worth a visit alone. Table Mountain stands in the distance, whilst the Stellenbosch Mountains lie to the south and the Hottentots Holland Mountains to the east.

Taal Monument, Paarl 2019
The Afrikaans Language Monument is located on a hill overlooking Paarl, Western Cape Province, South Africa. Officially opened on 10 October 1975, it commemorates the semicentenary of Afrikaans being declared an official language of South Africa separate from Dutch. Also, it was erected on the 100th anniversary of the founding of Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners in Paarl, the organisation that helped strengthen Afrikaners' identity and pride in their language.

I went up to paarl to check out the taal monument. I had never been there before and I thought it would make a great vlog. I also popped past paarl rock to take in the view. Apologies for bad sound the wind was crazy.

The Taal Monument took my breath away
You see it from miles away, but only when you are up inside the belly of this incredible monument are you struck but its awesome design and incredible construction. From afar, it's just a phallic statement standing proud on Paarl Mountain, but enter into the monument and prepare to have your breath taken away… especially if you have a fear of heights or suffer from vertigo. The tallest 'tower' literally made my head spin and, at the same time, filled me with a sense of awe and wonder that lasted for days.

Paarl takes its name from the huge granite outcrop that stands proudly on the crest of Paarl Mountain. The town which was founded in 1687, is the third oldest settlement in South Africa and has a rich cultural and historical heritage.

What a great close to 2015. Gates opened at 7pm to start the picnic that took us to after 12am into 2016. It was a good turnout and the weather did it's part...Loved it...See you all again at the end of 2016. Hope you all have a fantastic 2016...!
