Capernaum, the Ministry Base of Jesus, Magdala, Chorazin, Bethsaida, Tabgha, Sea of Galilee, Israel
Capernaum was the ministry base of Jesus during His ministry time on earth. Learn about the amazing things that happened there and in the surrounding area.
Location
1. The Sea of Galilee is located in the northern part of Israel known as the Galilee region. Therefore, it’s called the Sea of Galilee.
2. It is also referred to in Scripture by other names like Ginnosar, Lake of Gennesar, Gennesaret, Sea of Chinneroth, Kinneret, and Sea of Tiberias.
3. It’s about 70 miles (115 Km.) north of Jerusalem and about 27 miles (45 Km.) east of the Mediterranean Sea.
4. It is a freshwater lake about 8 miles (13 km.) wide by about 12 miles (19 km.) long, and 150 ft. (46 m.) deep.
5. It is located about 700 ft. (213 m.) below sea level.
6. It is the main freshwater source for much of Israel.
7. Because of its location, storms can arise quickly and drop down onto its surface without much warning.
8. The Sea of Galilee was located on a main crossroad of the known world during Christ ministry on earth. This international highway was called the “Via Maris” (Way of the Sea), and linked travel between the three continents of, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
9. Travelers from these 3 continents were forced to use this route as there were few other options for traveling to and from each continent. This was so because there was a desert to the east that was impassible due to lack of water, and the Mediterranean Sea was located to the west which was not a realistic option for travel as it was expensive, and ships were scarce.
10. The Via Maris passed right along the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, and there are old ruins and markers showing its existence.
11. The north shore of the Sea of Galilee was even more traveled than the roads and routes leading through Jerusalem.
12. Oftentimes, we might think Christ was hiding out somewhere in a remote location. However, just the opposite was true. He chose the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee (and Capernaum was located at a key place along this route) as a center stage so His message would reach as many people as possible in the world.
13. By spending most of His ministry time in the northern Galilee area, Christ’s miracles would travel by word of mouth to the ends of the earth. This laid the groundwork and sowed the seeds of the Gospel to the rest of the known world so that the evangelization work done later by the apostles would be easier and more acceptable to those who heard the message about Christ.
Historical Background
1. Abraham entered the Promised Land through the gateway of the Sea of Galilee when he first journeyed from Ur of the Chaldeans.
2. In Matthew 4 we find that Jesus established his home ministry base in the town of Capernaum which is located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee.
3. At least 6 of the 12 disciples were from right around the Sea of Galilee. These were Peter, Andrew, James, John, Matthew, and Philip.
4. According to Acts 1:11, the rest of the disciples were from the Galilee area as well.

In the region of Tabgha, on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, lies the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes, the traditional site of the food multiplication story found in all four gospels (Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:31-44, Luke 9:10-17, John 6:5-15). It is also where Jesus appeared to his disciples after his resurrection (John 21:1-17).
The church is most famous for a mosaic of loaves and fishes from the original mid-third century church. The church was expanded in the fifth century, but soon after destroyed by the Persians when they invaded in 614. The Byzantine structures and mosaics were excavated in the 1930s by a German team. In 1982, the current reconstruction was added. The original mosaics depict water birds and plants, ecology of the marshy swamps typical of the area historically.
The name Tabgha is a variation on its ancient Greek name, Heptapegon, meaning “seven springs.” Six of these springs have been identified in modern times, including one known as “Job’s Spring.”
Fourth-century pilgrim Egeria’s account of visiting Tabgha:
“In the same place (not far from Capernaum) facing the Sea of Galilee is a well watered land in which lush grasses grow, with numerous trees and palms. Nearby are seven springs which provide abundant water. In this fruitful garden Jesus fed five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish.”

Israel - Holy Land Tour Part 5: Tabgha / Mt. Beatitudes / Hazor / Dan
After a torrential storm on the Sea of Galilee it's a quick stop at the fisherman's bay at Tabgha - the place where Jesus called His Apostles to follow Him. Then it's on to Mt. Beatitudes, location of the greatest sermon ever preached, the Lord's Sermon on the Mount. The next day begins with a visit to Hazor, a city once captured by Joshua and the Children of Israel. Lastly we travel north for a stop at beautiful Dan - source of the Jordan River and one of the sites of ancient Israel's backsliding into idolatry.

ISRAEL: POPE TO VISIT TABGHA ON THE SEA OF GALILEE

One of the most well known stories about Jesus from the New Testament is the story of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes.
This miracle was said to have taken place in Tabgha, on the shore of the sea of Galilee.
Two thousand years later, the man Catholics believe is Christ's representative on earth, Pope John Paul II, will visit Tabgha next week.
As the sun rises over the Sea of Galilee, the fishermen start their day - as they have done here for centuries.
In the morning light Father Stephan takes his daily walk along the shore.
He is the superior of the Church of Tabgha.
Pope John Paul II will visit the church during his stop in the Galilee.

We are happy that he will see this intensive place; our church with the old mosaics, the stone where Jesus laid down the loaves and the fishes when he multiplied and gave the people the food to eat.

Inside Father Stephan's church, pilgrims come to pray.
All around are reminders of the new testament story that took place here - of Jesus feeding the five thousand with two fish and five loaves of bread.
The methods may be more modern, but fishermen still reap the harvest of the sea of Galilee, where the Bible also says Jesus walked on water.
Menahem Lev earns his living from the sea, with the help of a few young volunteers - and a computer.

Along the shores of the Galilee, a tent city has sprung up.
Thousands of pilgrims from all over the world will camp here during the week of the papal visit.
A huge site has been cleared on the hilltop above the Mount of the Beatitudes .
Here Jesus delivered his famous Sermon on the Mount: Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
And it is here the pontiff will celebrate the largest Mass of his trip, in front of 100,000 pilgrims.
The still waters of the Galilee are one of the few places on the pontiff's visit not involved in some kind of controversy.

Church of the Multiplication
The earliest building at Tabgha was a small chapel built in the 4th century A.D. This was probably the shrine described by the pilgrim Egeria at the end of the 4th century:
In the same place (not far from Capernaum) facing the Sea of Galilee is a well watered land in which lush grasses grow, with numerous trees and palms. Nearby are seven springs which provide abundant water. In this fruitful garden Jesus fed five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish.[2]
The mosaic of the fish and loaves is laid next to a large rock, which has caused some New Testament scholars to speculate that the builders of the original church believed that Jesus stood on this rock when he blessed the fish and loaves just before the feeding of the crowd who had come to hear him.
The large monastery and a church were built in the fifth century. While some date the destruction of the site to the time of the Arab conquest, the church was most likely destroyed in 614 during the Persian invasion, for already in AD 670, Bishop Arculf had reported that only columns from the church remained.
In 1932, after nearly 1300 years of solitude, two German archaeologists (Mader and Schneider) uncovered a number of the Byzantine church's walls and mosaics.
In 1981, after further excavations, the church was finally restored by German Benedictines to its Byzantine form, incorporating portions of the original mosaics.
Today, the church and surrounding land are property of the German Association of the Holy Land whose head is the Archbishop of Cologne. The site is further maintained by Benedictine monks from the Hagia Maria Sion Abbey, also known as Dormition Church, which is located on Mount Zion in Jerusalem
