Table Rock, Linville Gorge Wilderness, North Carolina
Off the beaten path, Table Rock Mountain is home to several crevices that hide caves and cellars that are a rock scrambler's playground. The Attic and Devil's Cellar are two hidden gems that feature caves, rock scrambling, and maze-like hiking for the adventurous hiker. The main trail begins at the Table Rock parking lot and picnic area and winds its way steeply up the mountain for about one mile until you reach the summit. The trail is mostly uphill with many rocky areas and is also part of the Mountains to Sea Trail that stretches across North Carolina, from Clingman's Dome to Kitty Hawk. Table Rock is part of the Linville Gorge wilderness in Burke County and McDowell County in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

Table Rock Mountain, Linville Caverns, and Little Switzerland in Pisgah National Forest NC.
The summit of Table Rock Mountain in North Carolina is breathtaking!
Exploring the trails is a wonderful experience, and the views along the way and at the top are amazing!
Linville Caverns visit was spontaneous, but we were in the area, so we decided to go in. It's the only show cave in NC, it was just OK to me. Did not see any bats though, the guide explained how hundreds of bats were infected with a disease called White Nose Syndrome.
The town of Little Switzerland is very quaint, it's considered the jewel of the Blue Ridge Parkway. They have villages, restaurants, festivals and a beautiful resort. There are other places you can explore in the area. This was my white jeeps first trip in the mountains! (Spring 2019)

The View from Little Table Rock NC - My first Visit
Little Table Rock is the outcropping that is just below Table Rock - the second highest peak in the Jonas Ridge chain. Here Jamie Griffin and I enjoy the views from Little Table Rock - looking down into the Linville Gorge and back toward Grandfather Mountain and Hawksbill Mountain to the north - and The Chimneys and Shortoff Mountain to the south. This is from my first visit to the east side of the Linville Gorge in November of 2009.
Chimneys and Table Rock Documentary - Intro and Table Rock Tripod Shots
I'm going to make a documentary about Table Rock and The Chimneys Area in western North Carolina. I'm inviting any one who is an expert in geology, botany, rock climbing, hiking, exploring, Linville Gorge history, etc. to send me some tips and commentary about what I'm seeing in the videos. There will probably be at least 10 segments posted here, with a script written from the combined comments from the YouTube videos, emails and other communications. If you even want to record your own commentary (turn my audio off) just do so and send me an mp3. This is part one which is mostly introduction and some slow tripod pans of the southern end of Table Rock. Thanks for any help you can provide. I used Canon HFS 200 and HFM30 Camcorders to shoot this video. I used the Zoom H2 for audio, and Davis & Sanford and Tiffen Fluid Head tripods for stabilization.

Hike to the top of Table Rock
Me and Carolina hike to the top of Table Rock, Linville N.C. One mile up and one mile down.
Table Rock Mountain Trail (Table Rock State Park SC)
Length: 3.6 miles one way
Type: Hiking
Difficulty: Very Strenuous
Description: The red blazed, 3.6-mile Table Rock Trail is a very rugged hike within the scenic and popular Table Rock State Park in the northwest corner of South Carolina. There are over 12 miles of trails in the park, but only the Table Rock National Recreation Trail ascends 2,000 feet to the summit of the imposing granite dome, Table Rock Mountain (3,124 feet). The hike begins at the Nature Center and ascends steeply through an open forest strewn with boulders. Along the way, you will see vegetation typical of the Southern Appalachians: dominant oak and hickory trees with scattered pines and hemlock. As you might guess, the strenuous hike offers the reward of spectacular views from the higher rock outcrops.
Pinnacle Mountain Trail (Table Rock State Park SC)
Table Rock State Park fits the bill for the natural beauty attributed to scenic Highway 11. The towering mountain, which gives the park its name, serves as a backdrop for the 3,000 acre park and its facilities. Below this section of the Blue Ridge Mountains, South Carolina natives and visitors can enjoy Table Rock State Park cabins, a campground and an old-fashioned swimming hole on one of the park’s two lakes.
-----------------------
Table Rock State Park hiking trails serve as an access point for the 80-mile Foothills Trail. South Carolina hikers can use to travel between several connected South Carolina State Parks. The Table Rock State Park hiking trails take hikers past mountain streams and waterfalls to the tops of Pinnacle and Table Rock mountains. While the park is well known to outdoor enthusiasts for its natural features, Table Rock also has its place in history. Many of the Table Rock State Park cabins and other structures built by the CCC remain standing and are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pinnacle Mountain Trail
Length: 4.2 miles one way
Type: Hiking Trail
Difficulty: Very Strenuous
Description: You will follow yellow blazes on this less trodden trail with several creek crossings and small footbridges amid the hardwoods and rhododendron that line the steep mountain slopes. The Foothills Trail follows the same route indicated by white blazes. You will encounter a small waterfall to the right and pass beneath a giant rock ledge, before you reach the junction of a 0.4 mile spur trail that leads to Mill Creek Falls. The spur ends at a wooden bridge where you can view the falls. Return to the junction and continue towards Bald Knob Overlook. After a steep ascension, the trail levels and joins the Mill Creek Trail. Continue hiking uphill to the huge sloping Bald Knob outcrop. Your reward is the view as you look out over the distant mountains to see Greenville and beyond. To continue to Pinnacle Mountain, walk uphill to the top of the outcrop and turn right into the forest. At 4 miles, the Foothills Trail will branch off sharply to the left marked by white blazes only. Going straight, you will ascend steeply to the tree-enclosed apex of Pinnacle Mountain. You can return the way you came, or follow the less strenuous, wooded Ridge Trail, to the Table Rock Trail and back to the Nature Center.

Ashley M.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Linville Gorge is Gorgeous
We’ve primitive camped in the Linville Gorge Wilderness for many years and absolutely love it. It’s peaceful and secluded and the views are absolutely gorgeous. My photos are from the Linville Falls side of the old highway that goes past the falls parking lot. Spaces are first come, first served dispersed camping. Leave no trace! We clean up after folks every time we camp up here and it’s just too sad that people will leave their trash. This area used to be the best kept secret in the NC mountains but is quickly gaining popularity.

Amazing Winter Drive! - NC Highway 105 & Wiseman's View
Old NC 105 is one of the hidden gems of scenic driving in the Eastern United States. The sometimes rough dirt road twists and turns its way along the western rim of the rugged Linville Gorge, with amazing views of Shortoff Mountain, Lake James, the Catawba Valley, Spence Ridge, the Chimneys, Table Rock, Hawksbill Mountain and much more. It's a wild and surprising ride that's best taken when the leaves are off the trees so you can peek at the jagged landscapes to the east, and the higher Appalachians to the west. In this video I show the drive up from the Paddy's Creek end where the pavement ends on the southeast, and continue up to the popular Wiseman's view, where many people claim to have seen the mysterious Brown Mountain Lights. I end up with some views from Wiseman's View shot with my GoPro Hero 3 on the end of a 13-foot golf ball retriever. Still shots were taken with a Nikon D5100. Hope this makes everyone want to come experience western North Carolina - even in the dead of winter!
Here are coordinates for where this video starts - at the end of the paved road on Old NC 105: +35°47'29.88, -81°55'17.22
Hiking Table Rock Mountain at Linville Gorge
View our complete Table Rock trail guide for directions, maps and detailed trail info:
Summit the rocky, craggy, iconic mountaintop of Table Rock Mountain on Linville Gorge's eastern rim, climbing through a scraggy forest of laurel, moss and rhododendron on this just-under-two-mile adventure. Views from the summit are sweeping and simply outstanding, extending far, wide, and deep into the surrounding gorge. The mountain's sun-drenched, rocky summit is ultra-popular with climbers and hikers alike. And the views are arguably some of the best in western NC, if not the entire southeast.

Western North Carolina's Most Scenic Drive - Highway 105
This is Part 1 of a scenic drive on Highway 105 from the Paddy's Creek and Shortoff Mountain area and headed north toward Table Rock and Hawksbill Mountain. I stopped and did multiple shoots to get this video from points on the road about 2 miles apart. You can see some awesome views of Linville Gorge, North Cove of McDowell County, the Linville River and much more. The music is just me strumming my Hohner acoustic guitar. Here's a link to Part 2:
