Congregation in Spiti valley during centennial celebration of Tabo monastery | Himachal Pradesh
Tourists and Monks from all around the world gathered at Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh in the year 1996 for the centennial celebration of the Tabo monastery. The year saw a lot of foreign tourists footfall and a lot got inspired for the conversion of their religious and spiritual beliefs. The year marks great importance as the Great Dalai Lama had visited the valley this year.
The Tabo Monastery located on desolate, flat ground with an area of 6300 sq m, enclosed by a high boundary wall built with mud brick. During 1981-83, a new Du-khang (assembly hall) was built on the south -east of Chos-Khor for the Kalachakra teachings (a process of initiation and rejuvenation) from His Holiness the XIV the Dalai Lama of Tibet in 1983 and 1996.
The monastery temples house a priceless collection of manuscripts and thangkas (Buddhist scroll paintings), historical, exquisite statues in stuccos, frescos and murals depicting tales from the Mahayana Buddhist Pantheon. Every inch of wall is covered with fine paintings in astonishingly well-preserved condition.

Tabo monastery, Kaza
Amidst barren dry mountains lies this ancient monastery made of mud and intricately painted from inside. Interestingly, it also features idols of Ganesh and Kal Bhairav, apparently accepted deities in one of the forms of Buddhism.
TABO : Ajanta of the Himalayas (HD) @chinu
Tabo is a small town in the Lahaul and Spiti district on the banks of the Spiti River in Himachal Pradesh, India. The town lies on the road between Rekong Peo and Kaza, the sub-divisional headquarters of Spiti. The town surrounds a Buddhist monastery which, according to legend, is said to be over a thousand years old. Tabo is situated at an altitude of 10,760 ft/ 3,280 metres
Tabo monastery, founded in 996 AD, is one of the most pious, biggest and oldest surviving Buddhist establishment in the Trans-Himalayas with its original decoration and iconographic program intact. Tabo Monastery is also referred to as the Ajanta of the Himalayas with a complex that holds nine temples, 23 chortens, a monks’ chamber and an extension that houses the nuns chamber. The monastery’s importance can be judged from the fact that its significance is second only to the Tholing Gompa in Tibet in the entire Himalayan region.

There are many priceless collections of thankas (scroll paintings), manuscripts, well-preserved statues, frescos and extensive murals which cover almost every wall. The monastery is in need of refurbishing as the wooden structures are aging and the thanka scroll paintings are fading. After the earthquake of 1975, the monastery was rebuilt, and in 1983 a new Du-kang or Assembly Hall was constructed. It is here that the 14th Dalai Lama held the Kalachakra ceremonies in 1983 and 1996. The monastery is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as a national historic treasure of India.

TABO: A Thousand Years Of Prayer
A documentary on TABO monastery in Himachal Pradesh by Payson R. Stevens
Spiti dance in Tabo monastery lahaul spiti himachal pradesh
Tabo Monastery, the oldest monastery in Tabo village in the Spiti valley, Himachal Pradesh
Tabo is a small town in the Lahaul and Spiti district on the banks of the Spiti River in Himachal Pradesh. The residential area can be seen surrounded by the barren Himalayan hills. One can see the colorful prayer flags.
Tabo Monastery was founded by the Buddhist king (and royal lama) Yeshe O'd in 996 A.D. A renovation inscription says it was renovated 46 years later by Yeshe O'd's grandnephew, the royal priest Jangchub O'd. These royal patrons, the kings of the Purang-Guge kingdom, were descended from the ancient Tibetan monarchy. Their ancestors migrated to west Tibet in the 10th century. By the end of the 10th century, their territory stretched from Ladakh to Purang and included all of western Tibet (ancient Zhang Zhung). Successive members of this dynasty built many monasteries along the trade routes linking the far corners of their kingdom.
The intimate connection between trade and religious establishments is a well-known phenomenon in the history of Indian Buddhism. The kingdom of the kings of Purang-Guge, from Ladakh to Mustang, was connected by a dense network of trade routes facilitated by the strategic placement of a large number of temples directly controlled by the royal family and their noble supporters. Tabo was a 'daughter' monastery of Tholing Monastery in Ngari West Tibet.
