Mount Unzen is an active volcanic group of several overlapping stratovolcanoes, near the city of Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture, on the island of Kyūshū, Japans southernmost main island.
Unzen City, Nagasaki JAPAN : Golden Momiji - Maple Trees in Chijiwa
Beginning of December is more like autumn here than winter. These trees in Chijiwa's Tachibana Shrine were just gorgeous. They intersperse sakura with momiji (cherry trees with maple) so that something beautiful and colorful is always there year round... A capital idea if you ask me. ^^

Yanagawa is known primarily for its hundreds of kilometers of canals.
Yanagawa Tachibana-tei Ohana is the former residence of the Tachibana family, a clan of feudal lords during the Sengoku and Edo periods. Its garden, the Shotoen, was designated as a national site of natural beauty, where there are about 280 pine trees that have been standing for 200 to 300 years.
Shotoen Japanese Garden was constructed by order of the fourth feudal lord of the Yanagawa domain, Tachibana Akitora, in 1697. The garden was modeled after the Matsushima islands (one of the Three Great Views of Japan) in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. The present garden was reconstructed in the late Meiji Era (early 20th century) when 200 old pine trees were planted and more than 1,500 garden stones were placed in and around the pond. This garden has been preserved in its original state as the “Eastern Garden” and was deemed a Government-Designated Place of Scenic Beauty in 1978.

Unzen City, Nagasaki JAPAN : First Sakura of the Year
I had been to Japan many times before, but only in summer-- so this was my first time seeing actual sakura (cherry) trees in Japan. It was a wonderful moment... Kitagushi Junior High was shut down that year due to lack of students, so this place is no longer in use, but at least the elementary and neighborhood kids/residents can still enjoy them.

There were many pools of bubbling springs dotted around the area, and the whole area was covered with white clay. The white clay is called 'solfataric clay'. The clay had been altered and decolourised by fumarolic gas, hot spring heat and acidic water. The energy source is assumed to be the magma reservoir under the seabed of the Tachibana Bay. The highest temperature of the fumarolic gas, blown out with hissing noises, can be 120℃. White and light yellow sinter deposits were attached on the ground around the fumaroles. We bought hard-boiled eggs cooked by the bubbling water and ate them with a dash of salt. More delicious than usual!

This time we visited Yanagawa City, a place famous for its riverboats and delicious eel.
Yanagawa is known primarily for its hundreds of kilometers of canals.
Riverboats, called donkobune, powered by a man with a pole take tourists on
short cruises, known as kawakudari (going down the river) around the town.
Interesting spots are for example the Yanagawa Ohana, the villa of the Tachibana
family who ruled Yanagawa City 400 years ago or dozens of delicious restaurants which serve
eel dishes. Our presenter Kin from China will show you what this beautiful city has to offer.

Shiro-dodan azalea cluster, which was designated as a natural monument, and the hell of “The Twenty-six Martyrs of Japan”, where 26 Japanese Christians were executed. In 1954, Keiji Sada and Keiko Kishi visited Unzen Hell for the filming of the drama, ‘Kimi No Naha? (What is your name?)’. Keiko, who played the heroine ‘Machiko’ touched a rock, then, now the rock is called “Matiko Rock”. She visited Unzen for its 50th anniversary of designation as a national park (1985), unveils the new stone monument
