Unzen City, Nagasaki JAPAN : Golden Momiji - Maple Trees in Chijiwa
Beginning of December is more like autumn here than winter. These trees in Chijiwa's Tachibana Shrine were just gorgeous. They intersperse sakura with momiji (cherry trees with maple) so that something beautiful and colorful is always there year round... A capital idea if you ask me. ^^

Yanagawa Shotoen Garden JAPAN
Yanagawa is known primarily for its hundreds of kilometers of canals.
Yanagawa Tachibana-tei Ohana is the former residence of the Tachibana family, a clan of feudal lords during the Sengoku and Edo periods. Its garden, the Shotoen, was designated as a national site of natural beauty, where there are about 280 pine trees that have been standing for 200 to 300 years.
Shotoen Japanese Garden was constructed by order of the fourth feudal lord of the Yanagawa domain, Tachibana Akitora, in 1697. The garden was modeled after the Matsushima islands (one of the Three Great Views of Japan) in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. The present garden was reconstructed in the late Meiji Era (early 20th century) when 200 old pine trees were planted and more than 1,500 garden stones were placed in and around the pond. This garden has been preserved in its original state as the “Eastern Garden” and was deemed a Government-Designated Place of Scenic Beauty in 1978.

Winter Purification Ceremony
The date is January 20, 2015. The temperature on this morning reached 3.5℃, with the water temperature at 8℃.
This date, considered the coldest of the year, is when Tachibana shrine in the town of Unzen in Nagasaki Prefecture holds an annual event. Thirty-four men and women from within and without Nagasaki bathed themselves in water from the Chijiwa River at six in the morning.
In ancient times, Japanese Shinto held the belief of sins that had to be washed off the body.
There was the “Amatsu-tsumi,” which impaired agriculture and desecrated religious ceremonies, the “Kunitsu-tsumi,” which disturbed social order, as well as sins that threatened life and health, wrought injury and defiled pregnancy, and caused natural disasters.
The acts of “harai” and “misogi” were purification rituals that removed those sins and restored life to its usual balance.
Today, the rituals are performed to accompany major shrine events and by those who wish to train their resilience and resolve in the cold weather. Martial artists also bathe in cold water before training.
The Kanchu-misogi is also one of the purification rituals where lay shrine visitors can use the same water to cleanse the hands and mouth.
