We wanted to escape the busy centre of Tokyo and so we visited Showa Kinen Park for a day of peace and quiet. This park is huge and feels like you are in the countryside but it is only a short ride away from the city. So perfect if you want to escape for a day.
The park has multiple distinctive areas from Japanese and Western gardens, flower beds, lakes, ponds, hills and even a small village and traditional farm. The park is known for the various flower blooms over the year.
It was easy to rent bikes for the day within the park and there were dedicated cycling paths to explore. There are also row and pedal boats to rent, children's play areas and cafes and restaurants (with good ice cream!).
The park is easy to reach from Shinjuku Station using the JR Chuo line, with Nishi-Tachikawa Station located just outside. There is a small fee to enter the park and we bought our tickets from the automated machines by the entrance.

Showa Kinen Park is a huge park located not far from central tokyo (one and a half hour train ride). Its so beautiful!! This park is one of the main site of Japanese flower festival in Tokyo. Although this park are less famous than Ueno and Shinjuku park, its in my opinion much more enjoyable and much more beautiful than those two. Check it out in this video!!

BEAUTY OF SHOWA KINEN PARK - Cherry Blossom Season Japan
Showa Memorial Park (Showa Kinen Koen) is a massive national park in Tachikawa, about 30 minutes west of central Tokyo, that offers a variety of scenery, seasonal flowers, museums and sports facilities. It’s a great place for a picnic or to view the cherry blossoms during the spring season!
How to get there:
JR Chuo Line : Shinjuku Station to Tachikawa Station (30 minutes, 470 yen)
20 minute walk to the park
Admission into the park: 450 yen
Kokubunji to Tachikawa via Chuo Line (100108-1133)
Taking the Chuo Line from Kokubunji to Tachikawa, watching the scenery (on the right side of the train) flow by. There are views of houses, large apartment buildings, and new track construction.
They've been working on improving the rails between Mitaka and Tachikawa for several years now, and all the new construction is beginning to improve things. Thirty minutes outside of central Tokyo is Showa Kinen Park, whose extensive grounds commemorate the late Showa-era Emperor Hirohito. While Tokyo is full of parks catering to a variety of tastes, from immaculate gardens to sporting grounds, Showa Kinen Park’s location in the suburbs of Tachikawa makes it a multi-purpose recreational playground for local adults and children alike. Attractions include abundant natural play areas for children, fields of flowers, long paths perfect for cycling, paddleboats, outdoor fitness groups, and nature photography classes.
Before functioning as a park, the grounds here were used as a Japanese Imperial military base, and subsequently a US military base during the American occupation after WWII. The park opened in 1983 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Emperor Hirohito’s reign.
