A 25-year-old sanctuary for chimpanzees is a conservation success story in Sierra Leone.
It has endured civil war and the Ebola outbreak.

The Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary sits just outside of Freetown near the town of Regent;. It is hope to around 100 rescued chimps who thrive in a system put in place with the hopes of being able to re-introduce them to the wild. In this episode, I take a poda-poda to Regent, a taxi to the sanctuary and then tour Tacugama Chimp sanctuary.

In the dense rainforest of the Western Region National Park, the founder of Sri Lankan national Bala created the Tacugama Chimpanzee Nature Reserve, covered with leaves and surrounded by a waterfall to rescue and rehabilitate endangered primates. Passionate and dedicated staff offer guided tours of the sanctuary twice a day, watching rescued chimpanzees roam the paddocks and search for those who have been released into a vast mountain area.
King Bruno: Chimpanzee: A story of tragedy and hope
In 2006, Bruno fled the Tacugama chimpanzee sanctuary in Sierra Leone, the dominant alpha man. With 31 other chimpanzees, he disappeared into the forest. After the leak, rumours and stories about Bruno spread. Bruno has never been caught.

Sanctuary provides ONLY two tours everyday @10.30am & 16.00hrs (Not between). So be on time!

Tacugama is located on Regent / Bathurst Road, a 30-minute drive from Freetown. A private taxi costs around 30,000 Leone’s to get you from Freetown. Plus it’s worth paying for them to wait for you, for the return journey back to Freetown.

For more than 20 years, the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Sierra Leone has taken in chimpanzees orphaned and abused by the illegal pet trade, but the challenges don’t stop there for this endangered species. Chimpanzees in Sierra Leone experience habitat loss from deforestation. VOA’s Jason Patinkin reports on Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary from near Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Freetown, Sierra Leone
In the dense rainforest of Western Area National Park, Sri Lankan founder Bala created Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a leafy, waterfall-framed hideaway set up with the purpose of rescuing and rehabilitating endangered primates, and in the process educating humans about one of our closest relatives. The passionate and committed staff offer twice-daily tours of the sanctuary, during which you'll watch rescued chimps frolic in enclosures and spot those who have been released to a larger area in the mountains beyond.
For those with more time to spare, there are a number of walking trails to follow, as well as four atmospheric lodges if you fancy staying the night. There's also a small gift shop, where you can arrange sponsorship of a chimp (US$80 per year) or pick up relevant documentaries and books, including King Bruno, a children's book telling the tale a chimp who escaped from the sanctuary in 2006, with tragic results.
A 30-minute drive from Freetown, Tacugama is signposted off the Regent/Bathurst road. The second half of the route, a rough, unpaved path through the rainforest, is just about doable in a standard car, but you'll need to cover the final section, a steep 100-metre climb, by 4WD or on foot. By public transport, take a poda poda from Freetown, changing at Hillcot Junction to get to Regent. From there you could walk or take an okada up the hill.

#swinging, walking, #playing or arguing on top of the ropes, it's all part of their daily activities. From the second stage, the #chimps move on towards next stages, so they need to practice their abilities to eventually move around comfortably high in the #treetops.

A Little Flyer in Regent, Sierra Leone
Tacugama's founder and director Bala Amarasekaran surprised the Little Flyers, by visiting their school in #Barcelona. And in return they sent one of their tiny fliers, Otto Fortune, to Sierra Leone to visit one of Tacugama's #TKeep schools, REC primary #Regent to build a relationship. We didn't know how this will takes us to a Chimpanzee Reserve, but here we are talking with Bala Amarasekaran the founder of Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
We drove around Freetown many times. Tacugama is located just on the outskirts of Freetown, in the Western Area Peninsula National Park.
Although we heard about the Chimpanzee place, as folks called it. We never thought to visit the reserve. That change when we hear Bala Amarasekara's unique perspective on the flood.
Bala explains in simple language, how caring for a chimpanzee is beneficial to the forest, drinking water and especially us humans.
Their mission “… is to use education and community conservation to eliminate the wildlife trade and safeguard the remaining natural habitats in the country. Through law enforcement, eco-tourism, livelihoods programs, and chimpanzee rehabilitation, Tacugama Chimpanzee Reserve engages local communities and multidisciplinary stakeholders to secure the future of Sierra Leone.”
