Japanese Horse Jumping Festival - Tado Matsuri (Ageuma Shinji) 多度神社の祭り
Tado Matsuri or Ageuma Shinji is a horse-jumping festival in Tado, Mie Prefecture where boys 17-19 ride horses up a steep embankment and try to jump a 2-meter wall. The festival is a divination ritual to predict the harvests of the area. 6 riders make two jumps each using 12 horses. If they clear the wall their village will have abundant crops.
The festival takes place on May 4th & 5th. On the 4th the riders make two attempts, on the 5th only one attempt and they do yabusame (mounted archery). This is footage of the first day.
