Gijipo Beach in Taean is one of the best beaches to camp at in Korea. Beautiful long beach with great sand and warm water. Not a lot of people of here, so if feels like you have the whole beach to yourself.

Taeanhaean National Park was designated as the 13th national park in Korea in 1978. There are 26 beaches along the 230km coastline, which encompasses the Taean Peninsula and Anmyeondo.
The park’s total area is around 326㎢, and ranges across Taean-gun and Boryeong-si. There are 72 islands scattered across the calm sea, of which only four are inhabited by people.
Restoring Taean
[Anchor Lead]
It’s been ten years since a massive oil spill blighted the sea off Taean-gun County. While some predicted that it would take decades to restore the area, thanks to the efforts of more than a million volunteers the sea off Taean has already greatly improved.

Crude oil gushes out of an oil tanker after a collision with a floating crane. More than 12,000 liters of oil spilled into the clean sea, polluting the coast. All marine creatures disappeared. Local residents were thrown into despair. But some 1.2 million volunteers from all over the nation rushed to Taean to help with cleanup efforts. Now, ten years later, the number of macrozoobenthos species has surged from just five at the time of the disaster to 57, and the eelgrass colony is also back.
[Soundbite] Noh Hyung-soo(Taeanhaean National Park Office) : The eelgrass colony acts as a nursery for young fish. The fact that the colony is back means that the marine environment has improved.
Shortly after the accident, traces of oil were found in 69 percent of the Taean coastal area, but they disappeared completely in 2014.
[Soundbite] Chung Won-ok(National Park Research Inst.) : Oil was quickly removed from the bedrock and sand by the tide. This contributed greatly to the restoration.
Now locals can dig for clams again. This year, sales of local shellfish have increased 5 percent from ten years ago.
[Soundbite] Choi In-soon(Fisherman) : There are plenty of clams this year. There are many oysters and clams.
Thanks to the hard work of some 1.2 million volunteers and the authorities' swift response, the sea off Taean is clean again.
Korean Light Festival
This week we go on a magical date to the Taean (태안) light festival, just outside of Taean. The park comprises a number of unique and massive LED displays, perfect for a winter activity.

A Trip to Find a Family's Roots
PJ Rogers is a father of five who has been living in Korea for 15 years. He has blonde hair and blue eyes, but he is Korean at heart, and hopes that his children will continue to live in Korea as he did. He takes off on a very special trip with his wife and five children, who all love Korea. It has been a while since they went traveling together, and their destination is Gangneung, Gangwon-do Province ?a place that holds a special significance for the family. Gangneung, which lies two to three hours from Seoul, is irreplaceable in the history of the Rogers.
Seven years ago, PJ and Lori were on a date in Gangneung. At the time, Lori had two daughters ?Jaeda and Amaya. While PJ was traveling with Lori and her two girls, he decided to ask Lori to marry him, and they became a family a year later. Years passed, and three more children were born before they returned to Gangneung.
The Rogers family's relationship with Gangneung actually began with PJ's father. Sixty years ago, PJ's father was stationed in Gangneung as an American soldier in the Korean War. He liked it so much that he dreamed of living there even after the war was over. PJ grew up hearing his father뭩 stories about Korea and Gangneung, and on this trip, he traces through his memories of those stories with his wife and children.
On their second day in Gangneung, the Rogers family decides to try something a little different ?Korean-style camping! The family had gone camping often in the U.S., but this is their first camping experience in Korea. PJ wants to teach his children about the glory of the outdoors, as his father had done for him. The family pitches a tent, plays in the sand, and sets up a barbecue outside. How will the children enjoy it?
Let's take a peek at the Rogers family's trip to Gangneung. For the first time in seven years, they're visiting the place where their family began.
