This is Part 2 of our Samcheok Trip! We were supposed to go to Daegu for the Lantern Festival but we were all so tired from the trip to Samcheok so our director took us to Taebaek instead where the filming was held for the famous k-drama, Descendants of the Sun.

Jaime and Hye-ryoung embark on a trip on the so-called O-train that loops through the remote parts of Gangwon-do, Chuncheongbuk-do, and Gyeongsangbuk-do Provinces and the V-train that shows valley vistas just as spectacular as the ones seen from the famed Glacier Express of Europe. They also visit a mountain village and a mining town where time seems to have come to a standstill and find genuine moments of healing with the wholesome and guileless people resembling their untainted surroundings.

그때 그 시절, 석탄을 만나다 - 태백석탄박물관 / YTN 사이언스
증기기관 탄생의 주역으로 18세기 산업혁명을 이끌었던 석탄은, 석유가 광범위하게 사용되기 전까지 난방, 수송 및 발전 등의 전 분야에서 인류의 주된 에너지원이었습니다.
우리나라 최초의 석탄 발견지인 강원도 태백시 역시 1980년대 중반까지 국내 최대 탄광도시로 호황을 누렸죠. 하지만 청정에너지 사용의 증대로 수요가 급감함에 따라 석탄 산업의 근거지인 태백에도 위기가 찾아왔습니다.
1970~80년대 전국 석탄 생산량의 30%에 달하는 약 640만 톤의 석탄을 생산하며 50여 개의 광산이 있는 도시로 성장했던 태백은, 1989년부터 시작된 석탄산업 합리화사업으로 인해 대부분의 광산이 문을 닫게 되었는데요. 현재는 몇 개의 광산만이 남아 그 명맥을 유지하고 있습니다.
광부들의 고단했던 삶의 현장은 역사의 뒤안길로 사라졌지만, 그들의 치열했던 삶의 기운이 묻어 있는 태백석탄박물관.
한국 석탄산업의 역사와 석탄에 대한 기억을 되새기고, 옛 태백 탄광촌의 향수를 느껴볼 수 있는 박물관으로 안내합니다!

S. Korean consortium to transfer coal from Russia to Pohang via N. Korea this we
A South Korean consortium will test transfer 40-thousand tons of Russian coal from the Rajin port in North Korea to the South′s southeastern port of Pohang from this Monday.
The South Korean delegation will be in North Korea until Friday,... and carry out a technological inspection of the overall land and sea distribution process.
Coal from a mine in West Siberia will be delivered from Khasan to Rajin by rail.
It will then be shipped on a Chinese tanker and arrive in Pohang on Friday.
