Tafi Abuipe, Ghana - Weavers at Work
The village of Tafi Abuipe, in Ghana's Volta Region, is a traditional weaving village. In front of nearly every home, families have looms set up to weave the beautiful kente cloth that Ghana is known for. This weaving tradition goes back hundreds of years. The Ewe, which is the local cultural group, claim that this region is the birthplace of the art of kente weaving. Ask anyone from the Ashanti region, however, and you'll be sure to have a lively debate about kente's true origins. We visited this village on a weekend, so most adults were in the fields, leaving the children to attend to the task of weaving the vibrant strips of cloth.

Kente Weaver in Bonwire, Ghana
The famous Kente cloth is native to Ghana. It's a a colorful cloth that has been woven traditionally by men on traditional looms. It's also the national fabric and it's worm by both men and women on important occasions such as weddings and rational festivals. The weavers don't weave from patterns so the weaver has to know what he's doing. This vibrant cloth is the Ashanti Kente and there's also the Ewe kente from Kpetoe, a village in the Volta Region.
