Music From Japan, 31st Season, Biwa Concert with Masataka Matsuo
March 5th, 2007 concert of the Junko Tahara Biwa Ensemble (Junko Tahara, biwa and voice; Kohei Nishikawa, flute; Akikuni Takahashi, Japanese ko-tsuzumi drum) presented a variety of works from contemporary compositions to a sung narrative of a samurai tale that goes back to the early 13th century.
Adopting a less formal setting than the usual (NY) concert stage, the performers demonstrated the unusual qualities of their particular instruments while Sharon Nakazato Sensei offered explanation and comments as an aid to approaching the new sounds.
Yasuragi Center was fortunate also in having present one of the composers, Masataka Matsuo, whose work “Biwa Yuyu” was commissioned by MFJ for the occasion of the series of concerts including the Smithsonian in Washington, Merkin Concert Hall at Lincoln Center, and the Universities of Illinois and Middle Tennessee as well as Yasuragi Center.
“Biwa Yuyu” was extremely interesting visually as well as musically, as the flute and drum musicians actually “walked out” the music while playing.Despite unfamiliarity with the instruments and the very different voice production, the music had “the power to move my soul at a very deep level,” as one concert attendee expressed it.
“Not only entertaining, but very instructive and moving,” according to another. And, “It’s extraordinary to hear music of this international standing in our own backyard. When is the next one?

Owner's Spotlight : Nihon Automotive Technology School 6x6
While roaming the halls at this years Tokyo Auto Salon, I spotted this beautiful AMG 6x6 and was instantly drawn to it. I have never seen one in person and was dying to get an up close look at it. However, as soon as I got closer to it.. I realized something was off.. or should I say, smaller, with this 6x6. It was only when I realized I was in the Nihon Automotive Technology (NATS) booth that this clearly wasn't a the 6x6. However, the fact that it WASN'T a real 6x6 and students at the school built it made it all the more appealing to me. For some reason.. I had to know how they made it. And drive it.
Thus with the help of my friend and fellow graduate Hirona Tahara of the program, I was able to do just that!
So this time, we have something special for everyone - Join me while I get an exclusive look along with my good friend and fellow cinematographer Cory Sparks (@Visual_kimono) at NATS 日本自動車大学校 AMG 6x6 and learn a little bit more about this amazing college!
