Tahitian Black Pearls
Tahiti and the Tuamotu islands are the only places in the world producing the world famous Tahitian black pearls. Even though they are called black pearls, colors range from white to black, with infinite possbilities of yellow (champagne), purple (aubergine), green, blue, etc.
In Polynesia, the pearl oyster species used to produce black pearls is the Pinctada Margaritifera, or the black-lip pearl oyster, which derives its name from the pigmentation of its mantle. Most of the pearls are produced in the Tuamotu archipelago, whose lagoons are ideal sites for the growth and the reproduction of pearl oysters.
The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes of pearls (including baroque pearls) occur naturally.

Tahitian Pearls by GIA
Tahitian Pearls by GIA. The dark spheres with exotic colors of Tahitian pearls were dramatically different than their white and cream-colored predecessors, and caught the attention of fashionistas in the mid-1970s. In this video, learn about Tahitian pearls. These black-lip pearls are cultured in the French Polynesian islands and come in a variety of colors. The most familiar pearl stone is white and cream, but the palette of colors extends to every hue. Natural pearls form around a microscopic irritant in the bodies of certain mollusks. Cultured pearls are the result of the deliberate insertion of a bead or piece of tissue that the mollusk coats with nacre.
