Tahitian Black Pearls
Tahiti and the Tuamotu islands are the only places in the world producing the world famous Tahitian black pearls. Even though they are called black pearls, colors range from white to black, with infinite possbilities of yellow (champagne), purple (aubergine), green, blue, etc.
In Polynesia, the pearl oyster species used to produce black pearls is the Pinctada Margaritifera, or the black-lip pearl oyster, which derives its name from the pigmentation of its mantle. Most of the pearls are produced in the Tuamotu archipelago, whose lagoons are ideal sites for the growth and the reproduction of pearl oysters.
The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes of pearls (including baroque pearls) occur naturally.

THE PAI MOANA STORY (From the TAHITI BEACH PRESS)
Peter RINGLAND, a Canadian by birth, quickly figured out that there were two equal development opportunities in TAHITI: tourism and black pearls. He is one of the rare expatriates with a solid experience in these two fields. It must be added that he wouldn’t be where he is today if some insurance company had not been afraid of the 1978 hurricane season. At the time Peter RINGLAND owned a 70-ft sailboat, the Seer, that became famous in the American TV series “Hawaii Five-O” under the name “Sea Sage”. After which, the “Seer” was geared for scuba diving. Unable to sail to the Bahamas because he couldn’t get insurance, Peter Ringland and his crew sailed to TAHITI.
“Pai” was the Tahititian hero in ancient times, who with a single throw of his spear from Tahiti, pierced one of Moorea’s highest summits. The hole is still visible today. Moana is the Tahitian word for “Ocean”. Since then, Peter RINGLAND was never thankful enough to Rodo for making him the “Hero of the Oceans”, something quite proper for someone who spent 4 years criss-crossing the Tuamotu Islands and organizing diving cruises.
The first person he met in the city of PAPEETE, on the first day he arrived there in June 1978, was the legendary long haul sailor Rodo William.
Like many Polynesians of ancient generations, Rodo had an inborn sense of navigation in the high seas. “He knows everything by heart and doesn’t need maps” Peter Ringland liked to say. “Rodo became like my adopted father”. When Peter Ringland got married a few years later with an island girl, Rodo respected the tradition by giving the young groom a Polynesian name: “PAI MOANA”

Ron Hall - Island Fashion Black Pearls - Jewelry Moorea
Location
At Kilometer 6.9 on the eastern shore of Cook's Bay, Moorea, stands one of the oldest and better known jewelry shops on the island. On the mountain side of the ring road, with its distinctive blue mosaic front, Ron Hall's Island Fashion shop, a genuine landmark of Moorea, can not be missed.
The History
Ron Hall sailed from Hawaii to Tahiti with the actor Peter Fonda in 1974. Peter went home; Ron didn't. A few years later, he opened the shop, and this family business Ron now runs with his son, Heimata, has been operating for over 30 years. Inside the shop, you can peruse a large number of documents and photographs documenting the shop's proud history.
The Shop
First and foremost, Island Fashion Black Pearls is a jewelry shop. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc... all of Ron Hall's creations showcase the magnificient Tahitian Pearl. You can choose a ready-made piece, or make your own selection of loose pearls, which will then be set in a mounting of your choice.
Pearl School
Choosing a pearl is not always easy. Ron Hall thought clients should be educated first, and so introduced the concept of Pearl School. Before you get to look at the pearls, Ron or his son Heimata will explain the criteria of shape, size, surface, and shine that are used for the classification of pearls. They will show you photographs and documents to illustrate the lesson. A fascinating insight into the world of this jewel of the ocean, that will help you make an informed decision about your purchase.
Ron Hall's Island Fashion, as the name suggests, is more than a jewelry shop. It also carries one of the largest selections of swimsuits in Moorea. It is also particularly well known for its exclusive range of Polynesian men's shirts, the Island Fashion brand.
Free Shuttle Service
No matter where you are on the island of Moorea, a free shuttle service is at your disposal. Simply call the shop from your hotel, the ferry terminal, or the airport, and arrange to be collected, then dropped back, for free.

Situation
