Solo Hiking around The Tahoe National Forest Part Hike 3-5
Tahoe National Forest is a U.S. National Forest located in the state of California, northwest of Lake Tahoe. It includes the 8,587-foot (2,617 m) peak of Sierra Buttes, near Sierra City, which has views of Mount Lassen and Mount Shasta. It is located in parts of six counties. In descending order of forestland area they are Sierra, Placer, Nevada, Yuba, Plumas, and El Dorado counties. (The El Dorado County portion is very tiny, at only four acres.) The forest has a total area of 871,495 acres (1,361.71 sq mi, or 3,526.82 km2). Its headquarters is in Nevada City, California. There are local ranger district offices in Camptonville, Foresthill, Sierraville, and Truckee.
Tahoe National Forest has many natural and man-made resources for the enjoyment of its visitors, including hundreds of lakes and reservoirs, river canyons carved through granite bedrock, and many miles of trails including a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. Also within its borders is the National Wilderness Preservation System's Granite Chief Wilderness.
The forest also serves as the water supply headwaters for the towns of Lincoln, Auburn, Rocklin, California, and Reno and Sparks, Nevada, which receive the water through elaborate canal systems that largely originated during the California Gold Rush and Comstock Lode eras.

Downieville Classic (Snow Biking!!) - Tahoe National Forest
Brian and I trying our best to go down the Downieville Classic Trails the day after a hard storm. We asked the shuttle to drop us off as far as it could get under the blankets of fresh snow. Ended up skipping Sunrise and stayed on the road until Butcher Ranch. Things were clearing up the further we went down the mountain. Quite the experience I'd say!

Sierraville California - Part 1 A Blast To The Past
Sierraville was home to the ancient Washoe who used the great sierra valley to hunt and gather food. This alpine valley that this historic ranching town currently resides in is the largest in the US known for its enchanting hot springs. During the days of the gold rush many Italian pioneers came to the region to utilize this rich land to provide meat, hay, dairy, lumber, livestock and produce for other mining boom towns in the region. Many of the goods were exported to Truckee, Central Pacific Railroad employees, Miners of the Comstock Lode of Virginia City and its sister community nearby known as Sierra City. Today many of the historic barns and ranches have been passed down through the generations leaving them to be some of the oldest in the state of California. Although little mining was done this semi ghost town is a true gem of the Tahoe National Forest. We invite you to take a walking and driving tour through town along with our beautiful galleries as we unveil its rich history. Very little has changed in Sierraville as deer, horses and cattle still graze.

Sierra City - Part 1 From Deadman's Curves To The Dearly Departed
Our journey into Sierra City takes us through Deadman's curves which you will catch the tail end of it as I begin filming. Soon we will be arriving in Sierra City an old gold rush mining town that dates back to the mid 1800's as the monolithic Sierra Buttes are sighted off in the distance that tower above it. Eventually our drive will take us through downtown where the cemetery lies at the western edge of town. The road that takes us through the Yuba Pass at one time was a wagon road for the early pioneers who came to the region seeking its gold. Were driving through the most northern region of the Tahoe National Forest a new region for us to explore one that does not disappoint! In the winter downtown is closed one can see as we go through town not a soul is in plain sight.

Gold Lake 4x4 Camp Trail
Don't forget to check out Gold Lake 4x4 Campground.
Gold Lake is in Southern Plumas National Forest. This trail/road is accessed close to the entrance of Gold Lake Campground. Go through Sierraville and it take about 2 hours from Sac to get there. About half of the drive is through beautiful high country. It's well worth the drive!
I started this video right after where you would turn right to enter the campground, just continue straight ahead. You will then see the signs that are posted showing how to get to the 4x4 campground. The campground has maybe 10-12 sites, and they are first come first serve. Some are right on the lake, others are across the trail/road.
For for the most part, 4x4 will not be required to make it to the campground. I only used 4 low because my truck is stick, and didn't want to play with the gas/clutch all that much. That being said, there are at least 2 places where 4x4 should be used, no question. There is the little climb at the beginning and then there is a little, and I mean little, obstacle to get over when leaving the 4x4 campground back to the regular campground. Here is that obstacle from another video I took when leaving the obstacle is just some tree root sticking out of the ground.
This is almost a perfect setting for anyone who is a beginner wheeler. The trail/road in is easy, and I have seen people out there in stock rigs. If you want a little more adventure, you can keep driving the trail/road away from camp and there are plenty of trails and fire roads to keep anyone entertained!
The only downside to this campground is there is ZERO cell service, doesn't matter the provider. CB/Ham radio highly recommended! It is remote, but on weekends you will see people out there. So you will not be totally isolated if in a bind.
Lastly, there is a gate on each end of Gold Lake Highway that closes for the winter months. Check the website for Gold Lake Campground to make sure the gates are open.
I hope you get the chance to visit Gold Lake. On a hot summer day its one of my ideal places to be!

Buttes Resort Sierra City CA Hiking and Gold panning trip
Welcome to Sierra City!
The elevation of Sierra City is 5,407 feet (1,648 m) and the town is situated in the canyon of the North Yuba River on California State Route 49, twelve miles northeast of the county seat of Sierra County, Downieville. The population was 221.
High in the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, nature used the wild waters of the North Yuba river to carve our little townsite, a natural observation deck for the mighty Sierra Buttes, gateway to the magnificent lakes basin and a refreshing portal on the famous Pacific Crest Trail. Here, hikers, cyclists, hunters, anglers and boaters have a world of choices for adventure and challenge. Lodging and dining are sumptuous in the pine air, which makes food taste better and sound sleep natural. Your soul is restored.
