Nearly Naked at Longjin “Dragon Well” Marathon
On January 28th, 2018 I completed my ninth full marathon. Although I had broken the four hour mark before, I was starting to think it was a fluke that I was no longer able to achieve. However, the conditions at Longjin were right, in terms of a flat course and low temperatures.
I had just enough training, thanks to the Hanson Marathon Method, featuring back-to-back long runs. The philosophy is that you practice running on tired legs, which is exactly the training you need for a marathon. While I religiously completed the weekend double long-runs, I had low mileage doing the week. In fact, I only maxed out at a 60km week before taper, so I feel that there is still room to improve. (Generally, the higher the weekly mileage, the lower your marathon time...baring injury).
For this marathon, I finally got rid of the security blanket of wearing a hydration vest or belt. I did carry a hand-held Salomon soft water flask with 500ml of water and some snacks in a zip-lock bag in my pocket, as well as a half poncho. Luckily, it didn't rain too much, and when it did, the rain actually felt good.
I met some other runners who had a similar pace. One was a man named Jack, who spoke excellent English. He has run 268 marathons, and this has probably already changed by the time you view the video, because he runs one almost every Sunday. I ran with or followed Jack for most of the second half.
I also ran with a couple of guys, perhaps in their 50s, who were having a great time chatting in Taiwanese the entire way. They told me they just liked to keep a steady pace to break four hours (which they did). Anyway, they had a friend come by on a bicycle who was carrying a small cooler with a shoulder-strap. Inside the cooler were bottles of a popular sports drink which they offered me! I was in desperate need of calories and something to quench my thirst with no aid station in sight, so I gladly took one. That was such a pick-me-up! With 5km left I did the opposite of what I normally do at the end of a marathon when the wheels normally come off...I started to speed up! And wouldn't you know, I caught up with Jack (the 268 marathon guy) right at the finish line! I was overjoyed and felt I still had it in me to run another 10km! (Of course, I did not)!
The next marathon is in five weeks with running buddy JC! I am using the Hal Higdon plan for running closely spaced marathons. Basically, it will be low mileage two weeks for recovery, a quick training spike peaking at a 16-miler (just like the Hanson Method's longest run), followed by a taper. The marathon will revisit my first ever marathon at Gau Mei Wetlands in Taichung. I feel it is safe to say, I won't end up in an ambulance like last time! KNOCK ON WOOD!
