Swimming Dragon. @ Shiyan City
Swimming Dragon Tai Chi, from Shiyan City China 9-26-2019.
History:
It is a Chinese very powerful internal martial art. A special longevity training method which contains the characteristics of Chi Kung (energy breath work), Daoist Yoga and Tai Chi, the 3 arts together. It originated in the Wudang Mountain region and was passed down as a self defense and health method within a Chinese Royal Family. Swimming dragon training emulates the movements of the Water Dragon, which are slow, smooth, continuous, and twisting, stretching and coiling.
Originally it was practiced exclusively in the Imperial Palace for health maintenance. It was believed by Daoist practitioners that, with consistent practice, this form promotes longevity and culminates in immortality. Because this Conceptual practice with responsive appetite and proper sleep and life style will lead to the None Conceptual Mind State.
Legends say that the perfected Swimming Dragon Form gives one a body that is as light as a bird and can come and go without a trace, when the Yuan Chi is restored by constantly cultivating Post Heavenly Chi of this form.
Thus, in the past, this form was kept as a secret practice. Even though this might sound very mysterious, at present we do see that people who are persistent in practicing this style have achieved improved health and increased longevity. The nice thing the Swimming Dragon requires very little space to practice, as little as 6 X 4 feet.
Longevity Art:
As a longevity training method it reverses the effects of aging by turning weakness, stiffness and low energy into strength, suppleness and vitality by slowly piling up Jing. This form is the external practice of the internal Daoist Qigong Meditation Micro-Cosmic Orbit Practice expending over the “Macro-Cosmic Orbit” (the large heavenly cosmic orbit) which leads the Chi through all your 12 Main Meridians and filling up the 8 Extra Ordinary Vessels after 1 - 3 years of constant practice.
Rejuvenation Facts:
For example, Yu Anren was imprisoned during the cultural revolution and in that time his hair went completely grey and he developed serious back problems. After his release he used the Swimming Dragon practice to cure his back and his hair turned from grey to black. My teacher I am learning the form from in the video, is in Shiyan City China and he learned directly from Yu Anren 10 years ago and his best teachers.

EXERCISES FOR ALL SEASONS
On Left Leg Only, Central Axis Tai Chi form, 1st section, side view - 05/22/07 (Spring)
Many of the principles of the V-feet Central Axis form
also apply to this On 1 Leg Only, Central Axis form,
namely:
- The head is held as if suspended by a string from above.
- A central axis drops like a plumb-line from the top of the head through the weighted (rooted) foot.
- Shoulders do not move independently of the pelvis. Ribcage and shoulders (upper trunk) turn only as far as the pelvis turns; the upper body sits on the pelvic girdle and goes along for the ride. Shoulders and head do not TWIST relative to the base of the pelvis; rather, shoulders and pelvis move as a unit, as if they are welded together into one block.
- The more flexibility in the hip joint, the greater the angle of turn of the upper body. No twisting the upper body and head to turn further than the hip joint can turn.
- The head does not turn independently of the shoulders; it's as if the head is bolted into a neck brace, which prevents it from moving independently of the shoulders.
- The nose, belly-button (tan-tien), and sacrum (tailbone) all point in the same direction during each movement.
- As in a revolving door, all turning movements occur around the central axis: when the left shoulder advances, the right shoulder retreats; when the right shoulder advances, the left shoulder retreats.
- Arm movements result from the movement of the torso (the body leads the arms, not the arms lead the body).
- Both knees remain well-bent throughout the form.
- One line of continuous, uninterrupted energy is felt from the rooted foot's connection to the earth, through the ankle, through the knee, through the hip joint, up the spine (& head), through the shoulders, through the arms, into the fingers and beyond.
In this On 1 Leg Only variation of the V-feet Central Axis form, counterbalancing the entire body around a central axis is even more critical. Any excessive movement that is not counterbalanced will tip me over. I will lose my root and will be forced to bring my other foot down onto the ground to steady myself and regain my equilibrium.
When standing on one leg, there is a heightened sensation that a small movement at the center generates a large movement on the periphery. A small movement of closing or opening the hip-joint creates a wide arcing movement in the region of the extended arms and hands.
Arms should not move independently of the torso; they follow the turning movements of the torso. The torso moves as one block around the central axis.
When the weight of the entire body is balanced around a central axis that passes through one foot, the lower tan tien aligns very close to the ball and socket hip-joint of the weighted leg. Powerful leg and kua muscles open and close the hip-joint.
Mind that drops through the weighted foot to the center of the earth (gravity line), as well as deep abdominal breathing (the diaphragm pushing down on the abdomen in the area of the tan tien) helps press the weighted leg into the earth, and helps the weighted leg deepen its root.
All the turning motions of the torso originate at the point of contact of the weighted foot with the earth. The foot, ankle, knee, and hip-joint of the weighted leg all participate in the turning motions. Many intricate contractions and relaxations of the muscles in the weighted leg contribute to the turning movements of the torso that sits on that leg.
Muscles that are not participating in the turning movements around a central axis must remain RELAXED and not get in the way of muscles that are doing intentional work. Unnecessary tension in various muscles throughout the body can interfere with ease of movement and actually unbalance the body.
Mind-intent should remain peaceful and tranquil, so chi can flow smoothly and evenly throughout the body. Any sudden, careless, jerky motion can upset the delicate balance of the entire body.
Experiencing all these principles intensely while on one leg helps me apply them more easily in the two-legged version of the Tai Chi form:
- a small movement at the center translates into a large movement on the periphery: during the regular tai chi form, arms should not move independently of the core turning movements that occur in the area of the hip joint / tan-tien
- a central axis established through one deeply rooted foot, around which the torso and arms can turn, is essential
- deep abdominal breathing (the diaphragm expanding downward into the abdomen) pressing the weighted foot into the earth helps deepen the root of the weighted leg
- deep abdominal breathing that is coordinated with the opening and closing of both hip-joints helps generate smooth, easy flow of power throughout the entire body
