Taikodani Inari Shrine ☆ Tsuwano, Shimane ☆ 太鼓谷稲成神社 ☆ Japan As It Truly Is
Taikodani is one of the grander Inari shrines and offers a spectacular mountaintop view.
Taikodani is one of the top 5 Inari shrines in Japan, and while Fushimi Inari in Kyoto is much larger, Taikodani is more peaceful yet still offers a 1000 torii gate tunnel which zigzags to the top. For brevity, in the video this has been cut down to show a few select areas - but takes about 10 minutes to go through. The shrine was established in 1773 to spiritually protect Tsuwano Castle, and commoners couldn't enter until around a century later.
Tsuwano in Shimane is an often overlooked place but gives a very tranquil and old Japan feel, with its canal lined streets with carp, beautiful cherry blossoms, and laid back atmosphere.
Admission is free.

#Japan #rural #travel
Tsuwano is a town located in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Tsuwano is also know as Little Kyoto of San-In.
Famous for its beautiful traditional Japanese streets and fish that live in the side water gutters. Unusually, Tsuwano is somewhat home to two Catholic churches. The Catholic church in Tsuwano itself is dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier, who visited Japan as a missionary in 1549–50,
In this video I explore the incredibly beautiful Tsuwano town, check out it's famous fishy residents, explore an unusual Catholic church and find an extraordinary set of Tori steps that led me to one of the best shrines I've ever explored.

Within the hills which surround Tsuwano Town in Shimane Prefecture, is the Taikodani Inari Shrine (太皷谷稲荷神社). The red shrine structures along the green mountains, makes this shrine hard to miss.
Originally built in the 18th century near the Tsuwano Castle, the shrine’s primary function was to protect the castle. However, currently people visit Taikodani Inari Shrine to pray for good health and fortune. Being one of the five greatest Inari Shrines in Japan, many traditional ceremonies are also performed here.
There are a large number of red torii gates over the steps leading up to the shrine. Visitors will feel they are passing a torii tunnel as they approach the main shrine grounds. Within the main shrine grounds lies a beautiful main hall. The former main hall can also be seen here. As seen in other shrines in Shimane Prefecture, sacred straw ropes are strung across the front of the halls at Taikodani Inari Shrine.
Hours: never closed
Closed: opened all year round
Admission: Free
Access Information:
**From Tsuwano Station, about 15-20 minutes on foot to the bottom of the stairway leading up to the shrine. It takes about 15 minutes to walk up the stairs to the main shrine grounds.

Taikodani Inari Shrine - Shimane - 太鼓谷稲成神社
Located in southern Shimane in Tsuwamo, the Taikodani Inari Shrine is one of the five most important inari shrines in Japan. It is said that In 1773, the 7th feudal lord Norisada Kamei, invited the deity spirit from Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Shrine while building Taikodani Inari Shrine on the top of Taikodani facing Tsuwano Castle as to pray for peace and security of the castle as well as for the happiness for Tsuwano’s citizens.
It is only after 1871, that the citizens of Tsuwano were able to enjoy Taikodani Inari Shrine thanks to the abolition of feudalism that effectively banned any citizens from visiting the shrine.
The original approach to the shrine is made of over a thousand red gates and 273 stone steps!

Tsuwano (津和野) is a town surrounded by hills in Shimane Prefecture (島根県). In the town centre old samurai mansions with lively carp create the picturesque surroundings. Tsuwano is also home to the Taikodani Inari Shrine (太皷谷稲成神社), one of the five greatest Inari Shrines in Japan. In 1773 Lord Norisada Kamei invited Inari deity’s spirit from Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto and built the shrine on the top of Taikodani Hill facing the unlucky north-eastern direction to keep evil spirits away.
Inari deity is primarily known as the protector of rice cultivation. Shrine visitors leave offerings for Inari's foxes (kitsune), who are often viewed as Inari's messengers. At other times the deity itself is portrayed a kitsune.

Shrines in Shimane, Japan
Kamosu shrine was build in 1346 and designated as a National Treasure in 1952.
Yaegaki shrine is known as the Gods of Marriage.
Those two are my most favorite shrines in Shimane.
Yaegaki shrine's Omikuji is quite unique. It is a flat piece of paper not folded. You buy the Omikuji and bring it to Kagaminoike pond in the forest near the shrine. Then put the Omikuji with a coin on the surface of the pond. At the same time putting the Omikuji, fortune message appears on it. It's said that the sooner the Omikuji sinks in the pond, the sooner you will marry.
Omikuji is a traditional form of Japanese fortune telling in which a person's fortune is written on the piece of folded paper and is typically sold at Shinto Shrines.

Tsuwano (津和野) , a small, peaceful town located on the western edge of Shimane Prefecture is a beautiful place to wander around.
Being untouched by tall buildings, neon lights, visitors can take a deep breath to let this traditional town sink in. Some attractions this town holds are:
**Old Samurai Mansions in the Town Center—the dark red roofs tiles, white walls and wooden windows paint a picture from the past
**Taikondani Inari Shrine—one of the five greatest Inari Shrines
**Carp—the waterways along the main street are the swimming routes for these active beautiful creatures. There are stores which sell carp food.
Tsuwano shrine & Masuda temple
**You can watch in HD** After our group visited the rock garden in Masuda (link to that video below), we hopped on a bus for a 45 minute journey to nearby Tsuwano town in Southern Shimane. There, we hiked up a mountain path to visit Taikodani Inari Shrine.
After walking around the shrine, we went over to the Yabusame (horseback archery) track and found a seat and had lunch. (That video is coming next)
After we traveled back to Masuda town, we finished our day on April 8th with a visit to Manpukuji temple in Masuda, which has historic links to a famous Japanese artist named Sesshu.

Steam train arrive at Tsuwano Japan
Double Header steam train from Yamaguchi-City to Tsuwano.
The train runs most weekends and is called Yamaguchi-Go and is pulled by C56 and C57. On the trip back to Yamaguchi it is coming back down from the mountains, so the loco's are on the front and back.
We travel on the trip back and it was wonderful. Japanese trains have windows at every seat that opens from the top and bottom. So you can open the bottom window and hear the engines. No Elf and Safety police here, so no problem sticking your head out or your camera. Mind you it is single track, so the only thing you would hit is a branch.
Back home now and still having bits of soot falling out my hair
