Places to see in ( Tain - UK )
Tain is a royal burgh and parish in the County of Ross, in the Highlands of Scotland. The name derives from the nearby River Tain, the name of which comes from an Indo-European root meaning 'flow'. The Gaelic name, Baile Dubhthaich, means 'Duthac's town', after a local saint also known as Duthus.
Tain railway station is on the Far North Line. The station is unmanned; in its heyday it had 30 staff. The station was opened by the Highland Railway on 1 January 1864. From 1 January 1923, the station was owned by the London Midland and Scottish Railway. Then in 1949 the British railways were nationalised as British Railways. When the railways were privatised the station became part of ScotRail.
Notable buildings in the town include Tain Tolbooth and St Duthus Collegiate Church. The town also has a local history museum, Tain Through Time, and the Glenmorangie distillery. Tain has two primary schools -Craighill (pupils - 274, April 2011) and Knockbreck (pupils - just under 120, April 2011) - and a secondary school called Tain Royal Academy with 500 pupils in summer 2014.
Tain was granted its first royal charter in 1066, making it Scotland's oldest Royal Burgh, commemorated in 1966 with the opening of the Rose Garden by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The 1066 charter, granted by King Malcolm III, confirmed Tain as a sanctuary, where people could claim the protection of the church, and an immunity, in which resident merchants and traders were exempt from certain taxes. These led to the development of the town.
Little is known of earlier history although the town owed much of its importance to Duthac. He was an early Christian figure, perhaps 8th or 9th century, whose shrine had become so important by 1066 that it resulted in the royal charter. The ruined chapel near the mouth of the river was said to have been built on the site of his birth. Duthac became an official saint in 1419 and by the late Middle Ages his shrine was an important places of pilgrimage in Scotland. King James IV came at least once a year throughout his reign to achieve both spiritual and political aims.
A leading landowning family of the area, the Clan Munro, provided political and religious figures to the town, including the dissenter Rev John Munro of Tain (died ca. 1630). The early Duthac Chapel was the center of a sanctuary. Fugitives were by tradition given sanctuary in several square miles marked by boundary stones. During the First War of Scottish Independence, Robert the Bruce sent his wife and daughter to the sanctuary for safety. The sanctuary was violated and they were captured by forces loyal to William II, Earl of Ross who handed them over to Edward I of England The women were taken to England and kept prisoner for several years.
Tain was a parliamentary burgh, combined with Dingwall, Dornoch, Kirkwall and Wick in the Northern Burghs constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1708 to 1801 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1918. Cromarty was added to the list in 1832.

Notes To Complete Later: There's something special about steam trains at high speed! It's surprising how many people find them fascinating - from kids to preservation society members. For some people, they start out as children captivated by Thomas The Tank Engine - perhaps it's the Hogwarts Express for the Harry Potter fans! For others, they enjoy live steam! Steam on the main line or steam on heritage / preserved railways.
The UK is the capital of preserved main line steam. New Zealand, Germany and Poland have quite a bit. US not as much as expected. Australia, Japan and South Africa some.
A1 Tornado is an amazing project. In the UK there are great heritage railways like, The Bluebell Railway, The Mid Hants Railway, The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, The West Somerset Railway, The East Lanchashire Railway, The Great Central Railway, The Keighly And Worth Valley Railway, The Kent & East Sussex Railway, The North Norfolk Railway, The Severn Valley Railway, The South Devon Railway, The Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway and of course narrow gauge like The Welsh HIghland Railway, Tallyllyn Railway. West Coast Railways.
In the US - Cumbres And Toltec, Durango And Silverton etc.
Also steam features in Great Railway Journeys of the world by the BBC.

This is the largest model train layout of the world. This beautiful model railway is called Miniatur Wonderland. The Miniatur Wonderland is Germany's largest and finest model railroad exhibit, and the largest of its kind in the world. The model railway layout is located in Hamburg, Germany. There are 50,525 ft of railway tracks in HO scale, divided into several sections, for example, Germany, Alps and Austria, City of Hamburg, America, Scandinavia, Switzerland and Italy.
One of the most popular attractions, beside the model trains, is the replica of the Hamburg Airport because it is a fully functioning miniature airport complete with departures and landings of model airplanes. I guess, you will not believe your eyes when you watch this video.

Running Marx British Tinplate Trains.
I decided to run my British Marx tinplate trains this afternoon. They had sat for over a year in a tote. I keep each individual car rapped up in paper towels to prevent scratching of paint. These Marx British trains have become scarcer than hens teeth. On the outside lower loop is The 2509 A4 Silver Link, to the inside is a black & blue 3978 pulling two Pullmans. Up on the mesas is a black & white 3978 freight train set. These were all sold as you see them as sets, most likely in the 1950's. They were made in Wales and England. Both the 2509 A4 and black 3978 were clockworks. It takes approx. 5 minutes each to swap the motors out to electrics. Most livestock cars are missing their doors. Mine does not. Someone did a good job assembling the little car the day it was made.

F-111 New Paint Fort Worth Aviation Museum
Aircraft History
The Fort Worth Aviation Museum’s F-111E was Air Force serial number 68-0009. It was constructed by General Dynamics (c/n A1-178, E-19) here in Fort Worth, Texas. It is there where it received it’s nickname “Balls 9” as the Air Force serial number depicts zeros and a “9.” It was accepted by the Air Force on November 10, 1969. It was first assigned to the 27th Tactical Fighter Wing, Tactical Air Command, at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico. It was then assigned to the 20th Tactical Fighter Wing Gamblers,” US Air Forces Europe, beginning in January 1971. It carried the tail code UH as it was based at RAF Upper Heyford, Great Britain, for just over 21 years. During this time, the aircraft was seen in the markings of the 77th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) and possibly the 79th TFS.
After retirement, “Balls 9” was transferred to AMARC as FV0093 on May 11, 1992, for storage. It remained in “the Boneyard” in Tucson, Arizona, until 2003. A museum in Connecticut acquired it but soon went out of business and “Balls 9” languished until 2007. The Fort Worth Aviation Museum discovered the aircraft in a salvage yard. With help from the B-36 Peacemaker Museum this aircraft was brought home to Fort Worth in 2008.

Jul 8, 2011: German photographer Thomas Struth receives his first solo show in Britain this summer at London's Whitechapel Gallery. Ranging from 1978 to 2010, the exhibition takes in dense jungles, gawping tourists, re-built German cities and sprawling Asian ones. FT photography critic Francis Hodgson visits the show, and asks Struth and curator Achim Borchardt Hume about the personal choices behind these seemingly objective pictures.
Dornoch to Embo
The little village of Embo lies just a few miles north of Dornoch on the road to Loch Fleet. There has been a settlement at this location since at least the Bronze Age - a fine example of a burial cairn can be seen in the centre of the village at the entrance to the caravan park.
Embo was formerly a fishing village, as can be seen from the lanes and rows of little cottages that run in parallel down to the beach. However, nowadays the village is a centre for tourism with families attracted by the long, clean, sandy beaches.
