Tain is a royal burgh and parish in the County of Ross, in the Highlands of Scotland. The name derives from the nearby River Tain, the name of which comes from an Indo-European root meaning 'flow'. The Gaelic name, Baile Dubhthaich, means 'Duthac's town', after a local saint also known as Duthus.
Tain railway station is on the Far North Line. The station is unmanned; in its heyday it had 30 staff. The station was opened by the Highland Railway on 1 January 1864. From 1 January 1923, the station was owned by the London Midland and Scottish Railway. Then in 1949 the British railways were nationalised as British Railways. When the railways were privatised the station became part of ScotRail.
Notable buildings in the town include Tain Tolbooth and St Duthus Collegiate Church. The town also has a local history museum, Tain Through Time, and the Glenmorangie distillery. Tain has two primary schools -Craighill (pupils - 274, April 2011) and Knockbreck (pupils - just under 120, April 2011) - and a secondary school called Tain Royal Academy with 500 pupils in summer 2014.
Tain was granted its first royal charter in 1066, making it Scotland's oldest Royal Burgh, commemorated in 1966 with the opening of the Rose Garden by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The 1066 charter, granted by King Malcolm III, confirmed Tain as a sanctuary, where people could claim the protection of the church, and an immunity, in which resident merchants and traders were exempt from certain taxes. These led to the development of the town.
Little is known of earlier history although the town owed much of its importance to Duthac. He was an early Christian figure, perhaps 8th or 9th century, whose shrine had become so important by 1066 that it resulted in the royal charter. The ruined chapel near the mouth of the river was said to have been built on the site of his birth. Duthac became an official saint in 1419 and by the late Middle Ages his shrine was an important places of pilgrimage in Scotland. King James IV came at least once a year throughout his reign to achieve both spiritual and political aims.
A leading landowning family of the area, the Clan Munro, provided political and religious figures to the town, including the dissenter Rev John Munro of Tain (died ca. 1630). The early Duthac Chapel was the center of a sanctuary. Fugitives were by tradition given sanctuary in several square miles marked by boundary stones. During the First War of Scottish Independence, Robert the Bruce sent his wife and daughter to the sanctuary for safety. The sanctuary was violated and they were captured by forces loyal to William II, Earl of Ross who handed them over to Edward I of England The women were taken to England and kept prisoner for several years.
Tain was a parliamentary burgh, combined with Dingwall, Dornoch, Kirkwall and Wick in the Northern Burghs constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1708 to 1801 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1918. Cromarty was added to the list in 1832.

John Ross, born 29 January 1726, Tain, died March 1800, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was a merchant during the American Revolution. He early relocated to Perth, Perthshire, Scotland, and entered into mercantile pursuits, but in 1763 he went to Philadelphia, where he became a shipping merchant. He was on familiar terms with George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Robert Morris, and several entries in General Washington's diary, during the sittings of the convention to frame the United States Constitution, tell of engagements to dine with Mr. Ross at his country place, Grange Farm or the Grange, named after the home of Lafayette. I have heard some guy playing Waller records on the air one day, and i thought: that's the way to play the piano! That's how Ralph Sutton became one of the most obvious and one of the greatest Waller desciples to play since the death of the master in 1943. At that time he was still in his late 'teens and in the army. Since then Waller has always been his idol., although he has paid equal attention to early ragtime and has lately developed a style that is more obviously his own. He expands on the above statement by replying to a question to what kind of piano playing he prefers: I like to keep it swinging - not strained - and keep it happy. That just about sums up the music to be heard on this record. This is the music with the obvious Waller influence, certainly swinging and exhibiting a wonderful techinque.
In june 1952, at the invitation of the National Federation of Jazz ORganisations of Great Britan, Ralph came over to this country with Lonnie Johnson to play in a Jazz concert at the RoyalFestival Hall. This was the first time in 14 years that an American jazz musician had played in England with any sort of official sanction. An audience of 4,000 flocked to hear these men, and it was a memorable occasion.
Ralph Sutton was born on November 4th, 1922, in the Missouri village of Hamburg, a hamlet of about 100 people. In his youth he studied classical music (which he still loves to play); he says he learned it while his mother stood over him with a metronome. He often played dance music at night with his father's country band while he was also studying musik at Kirksville State Teacher's College in Missouri. After gaining a local reputation, Ralph was heard by Jack Teagarden and was asked to join the Teagarden band. Two months later he was drafted into the army and it was two years before he returned to civillian life and picked up the musical career where he had left of. Jack Teagarden introduced him to Eddie Condon's Club in Greenwich Village in New York and there Ralph has become a regular feature, playing intermission piano between the jazz band sessions. Since then he has made many recordings and concerts appearances and established himself as one of the greatest white exponents of traditional jazz piano.
The present collection reveals his versatility and particularity emphasises his Waller mood and his wonderful precision. Cliff Leeman at the drums provides just the right kind of accompaniment and the results are, shall we say, swinging - not strained - and happy!

Two double-headers, at opposite ends of Britain, from this 9-day tour.
On Mon 18th April, 45407 and 44871 accelerate away from Tain, on the north east coast of Scotland, on their way from Wick to Inversess.
On Sat 23rd April, 45305 and 70013 Oliver Cromwell surge uphill away from St Germans in Cornwall, on their way from Bristol to Penzance. As far as I know, this is the first time that these two locos, both in the care of the 5305 Locomotive Association, had worked together on the main line.

Get to know the Internet; Basic digital and online skills training; Led by: North Highland Language Centre
To aid understanding and use of the internet for residents of Tain and surrounding area. To work with Highlife Highland Library services and qualified experienced staff to provide basic online training for use of ipads and tablets, and smart phones. To provide basic instructions on applications they wish to use such as Facebook, Skype, Online books, Youtube etc . We will also aim to show people how the internet can be used to access local services as well as make savings in their everyday lives. The sessions will run for 2 hours per week, over 10 weeks and hope to engage 30 learners.
